【4K Stroll】Takanabe Daishi – Miyazaki – Japan / Stone Statues, a Tribute to the Souls of Ancestors

✋Hello! Today we will visit a hill where there are mysterious stone statues that arouse curiosity. This place was founded by Mr. Yasukichi Iwaoka, who was moved by the looting of Mochida burial mounds in the early Showa period.

“Takanabe Daishi” is a group of stone statues located in Takanabe Town in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. As a young man, Mr. Yasukichi Iwaoka went on the “Ohenro” pilgrimage to Shikoku and after experiencing it, he promised himself to create a miniature version of it. The opportunity arose a dozen years later, when he had collected enough money as a rice merchant. At At the age of 43, he purchased land near the burial mounds and then invited a sculptor from Oita Prefecture to create 88 statues of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. As the statues were being created, Mr. Iwaoka observed and learned the carving techniques. Then he spent half of his life protecting the mounds and building statues that commemorate the souls of those buried in the tombs. He began carving his first statue in 1932, carving over 700 statues during his life, and continued to work on them until he was 87. From this place you can admire the picturesque view of the surrounding farmlands and the Hyuga Sea. At the top of the hill there is a small Inari shrine with a row of distinctive red torii gates and also a hall filled with small statues.

May happiness be with this place.
