【Nature World Kochi: The Miracle of Gastronomy】
At the “Tomato Summit,” Kochi’s brand-name tomatoes gather in one place. Out of many the “fruit tomatoes” catches everyone’s eye. Their sweetness and rich flavor are highly praised nationwide—especially the “Tokutani Tomato,” a supreme delicacy that can fetch as much as 25,000 yen per box.
The secret behind the “Tokutani Tomato” lies in the “miraculous soil” created by typhoons. The high salinity of the soil placed on the tomatoes draws out their sweetness to the maximum.
Hidaka Village is nationally known as the “Tomato Village,” renowned for its fruit tomato production. Restaurants serving tomato-based omelet rice line the streets, and signs advertising omelet rice can be seen all around the village.
Particularly notable are the fruit tomatoes grown by Yoshihisa Hamada, which are so dense they contain almost no air, once earning the title of “Japan’s Best Tomato” at a department store.
Omelet rice made with fruit tomatoes and additive-free tomato sauces made by village mothers are also very popular.
In Shimanto Town, large-scale tomato cultivation using cutting-edge Dutch technology is also underway, and about 20% of all tomatoes produced in Kochi Prefecture now come from here.
A program that academically analyzes the roots of Kochi cuisine, the origin and development of ingredients, preparation methods, and ways of enjoying food—combining expert scientific insights with beautiful visuals to showcase the wonders of Kochi’s food culture.
