Oshino Hakkai
The water of Oshino Hakkai is crystal clear, and when you look into its depths, it is surprisingly blue

Rain and snow that fell on Mt. Fuji soaked into the earth over the course of more than 20 years, and then gushed forth, creating eight small seas. Since ancient times, this sacred spring water has been the object of purification and worship as pure and spiritual water. In fact, the entire village of Oshino was once a huge lake called Lake Utsu. In the great eruption of Mt. Fuji in 800, Lake Utsu was divided into two by lava, becoming Lake Oshino and Lake Yamanaka. After that, Lake Oshino gradually dried up, and the basin at the bottom of the lake is now Oshino Village. The remains of Lake Utsu are said to be the Oshino Hakkai. Oshino Hakkai was an important place as a sacred place for Fuji-ko, which flourished in the Edo period under the founder of Mt. Fuji worship, Hasegawa Kakugyo, and was called the Edo 808-ko. However, this also fell into disuse at the end of the Edo period, and Tomoemon, the founder of the Taiga-ko, lamented this and erected a stone monument inscribed with the name of the dragon king and a waka poem at each of the eight seas, enshrining one of the eight great dragon kings at each sea.

Mysterious spring water – World Cultural Heritage Site, Natural Monument, and 100 famous waters

Long ago, Lake Oshino experienced many eruptions from Mt. Fuji, and gradually the water gradually leaked out between the foot of Mt. Fuji and the Misaka mountain range, and after a long period of excavation and drainage, the lake finally dried up. However, several spring ponds originating from the underground water of Mt. Fuji remained. A representative spring pond is the Oshino Hakkai. The meltwater that falls on Mt. Fuji was filtered through the lava, an impermeable layer underground, over the course of several decades, becoming crystal clear water. Beautiful and mysterious, the sight of Mt. Fuji reflected on the water’s surface in the changing colors of the seasons seems to quietly appeal to visitors about the original nature of water and its beauty that should be protected. Oshino Hakkai was designated a national natural monument in 1934 based on its “shape, water quality, water volume, conservation status, scenery, Buddhist thought (Fuji faith), etc.,” and in 1985 it was selected by the Environment Agency as one of Japan’s 100 famous waters.
