84-Year-Old Grandma Still Baking 400 Buns a Day in Japan

Watch your head. Oh, pardon me. Good morning. How old are you? I’m 84. When did you open your bakery? That was back in 1970… So it’s been 55 years now. Those 55 years really flew by. Always rushing around, you know? I get up especially early on Saturdays… I get up before midnight. I need to charge it. That’s my hearing aid. Once you start taking blood pressure medicine… …you have to keep taking it forever. Alright, let’s get to work! As for how I learned to cook… I just followed in my father’s footsteps. He kind of just had me watch and learn. He was old-fashioned like that. Sometimes I’d fall asleep standing next to him. How many sausages today? Twenty, please. Sausages… Twenty it is. Hamburgers 110 yen ($0.75), curry bread 120 yen ($0.80) Would you like some melon bread? Thank you. They open at 5 in the morning, but not everything’s ready right away. Tuna sandwiches 240 yen ($1.65) Other sandwiches 180 yen ($1.25) Pizza toast 110 yen ($0.75) Meat-and-potato croquettes 140 yen ($1) Hot dogs 140 yen ($1) Minced meat cutlets 140 yen ($1) Bread loaf 620 yen ($4), rusks 100 yen ($0.70), anko cream rolls 150 yen ($1) Cheese & blueberry melon bread 140 yen ($1), cream melon bread 110 yen ($0.75) Blueberry jam rolls 150 yen ($1), sausage & corn rolls 100 yen ($0.70) Grape rolls 100 yen ($0.70), cream rolls 100 yen ($0.70) I’d say we make about 25 different kinds. How many do you bake in a day? Around the high 300s to just under 400, I think. Welcome! Good morning. Do you have any recommendations? Our hamburgers and curry bread are popular. We make the red bean paste ourselves, too. I’ll take this, please. Thank you for waiting. That’ll be 940 yen ($6.50) Thank you. Thank you very much. Please come again. I definitely work at least 12 hours a day. Maybe even 20 hours sometimes. As for sleep… I’d be happy if I got about 5 hours. But I don’t even think I get that. I wake up during the night. Years ago my hands would go numb when I slept… …and the pain would wake me up. That doesn’t happen so much anymore, so… …I suppose that helps a bit. For cream puffs and such… We use a lot of eggs. Maybe 80 to 100 a day. Eclairs 60 yen ($0.40) Cream puffs 50 yen ($0.35) 30 cream puffs. And 30 eclairs. Just a moment, please. 30 eclairs and 30 cream puffs. Oh, we’re out of eclairs. I’m so sorry. The 30 eclairs will take about 30 minutes. I’m going to that daycare right there (to drop off some bread). Thank you very much. Thank you. Daycare director: Thanks for everything. Daycare director: Keep up the good work. Daycare director: Thank you. That’s the daycare my kids used to go to. The teachers from back then aren’t around anymore, though. Welcome! Three eclairs, please. And two cream puffs, thank you. Thank you very much. Three cream puffs and three eclairs, please. Which one should I try? The cream puff! Let’s eat! Mmm! Good? Super tasty. Seriously. So much cream! It’s crazy good. So sweet. It’s my first time here. Someone recommended it to me. All that cream when they cut it open… It looked amazing. Cheap and delicious. Especially the eclairs and cream puffs. The automatic door wasn’t working right. Fixed it. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thanks again. Did you sell out today? Yes, all sold out. Please come again. Can we take a photo together? Thank you so much. I’ll come back again. Oh, the phone. Hello? Yes, we’re open today. Cream puffs and eclairs? All of them. Go ahead and pack them however you like. Please give me two boxes. It’s been ages since I came. Maybe 20 years. I happened to be nearby… …so I thought I’d stop in. So nostalgic. Back then (20 years ago), eclairs were about 40 or 50 yen (about $0.30), right? That’s right. Cream puffs were 30 yen, and eclairs were 40 yen. I thought I’d get some for the younger folks. For my place, and also for some other younger people. For the price, they’re really generous. They don’t skimp at all. I really appreciate it—it helps a lot. That’ll be 3,240 yen ($22). I hope this place stays open for a long time. There really aren’t many shops like this left. They really pack in the cream. I hope she doesn’t ever stop. She can raise the price if needed. Would you like a bag for these? Thank you. Thank you so much. Sorry… I kind of bought them all. Thank you. I’ll be back again. Thank you. Saturdays are really busy. Things are selling well every day lately. It used to be cheaper back in the day. Eggs have gotten really expensive. And so have the other ingredients. So even if we raise prices… Ever since my husband’s time, we’ve used good ingredients but kept prices low. We even use the best quality flour. Since we make everything out of our home… …we don’t have to pay rent. That’s how we manage. My grandchildren… …don’t seem interested in taking over the shop. So I plan to keep doing it as long as I can. As long as I’m healthy. I usually keep the shop open until around 7. But I close early if everything sells out. It’s better to stay active. Staying still isn’t good for the body. That’s why I keep working. Our channel strives to share the skills of true craftsmen with the world and pass them on to the next generation. 1.

  6. All respect to this lady for pressing through her health issues to keep serving her community. Now, if she would just put on a hair net, face mask, and gloves while working!

  7. Deberían ayudarle a limpiar la cocina esta demasiado sucia me imagino el ratonero que debe haber por las noches

  8. Her determination to cook and unique energy makes me laugh but warms my heart. She makes me want to work harder in life and not complain about my bad days and challenging circumstances.

  9. There's no jobs like this in America because all jobs are screaming and yelling and then weird rude coworkers.

I'm not saying Japan is better, but I'm saying America is a very rude, mean, and wicked place. I just want to work and have no negativity.

  10. What i like besides her being super awesome lady with an incredible work ethic, is how nice her customer base is, how patient and respectful they are towards her.
