長野県南木曽町にある妻籠宿は、江戸と京都を結んだ五街道のひとつ中山道の42番目の宿場で、木曽十一宿の南端に位置する。
ここは、江戸と京都のほぼ中間地点で、参勤交代の大名行列や商人、旅人の宿場として栄え重宝された。
今も約1kmの街道沿いに旅館や飲食店、土産屋などが軒を連ね、旅行客で賑わう。
妻籠宿は、古いだけの町並みではない。
地域住民が守り続けてきた「生きた歴史遺産」である。
妻籠宿は、明治の鉄道開通の時代の流れから外れ、長い間、取り残された中にあった。
しかし1960年代、地元の人々が立ち上がり、「壊さず、売らず、貸さず」という誓約の元に、この歴史的景観を守り抜いた。
その志が、今も街並みに息づき通りを歩く旅人の胸を温める。
全国に先駆けて町並みの保存運動が行われた結果、昭和51年（1976年）に日本で最初の国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に選定された。
他の保存地区と異なり、周辺の農地など宿場を支えた環境全体を保存するため、国有林を含めた広範囲が選定されている。
脇本陣奥谷の重厚な木戸をくぐれば、かつて大名や公家が休んだ座敷が静かに佇む。
一方、高札場の法令や掟書が書かれた木板が江戸幕府の威光を今に伝え威圧する。
宿場を貫く街道は幾百年もの旅人の足音を刻み込み、足裏に歴史の重みを伝えてくる。
妻籠宿の魅力は、歴史と景観、人情と自然がひとつになった「時を旅する体験」だ。
江戸時代の旅人の息づかいが、今も尚、この宿場には宿っている。

Tsumago-juku, located in Nagano Prefecture’s Nagiso Town, is the 42nd post station on the Nakasendo, one of the five highways connecting Edo and Kyoto, and is located at the southern end of the Kiso Eleven Post Stations.
It is located almost halfway between Edo and Kyoto, and flourished as a post station for daimyo processions, merchants, and travelers.
Even today, ryokan inns, restaurants, souvenir shops, and other businesses line the 1 km-long road, bustling with tourists.
Tsumago-juku is not just an old town.
It is a “living historical heritage” that has been preserved by the local residents.
Tsumago-juku was left behind for a long time, unable to keep up with the times when the railway opened in the Meiji period.
However, in the 1960s, the local people rose up and protected this historic landscape based on a pledge to “not destroy, not sell, and not rent.”
That spirit still lives on in the townscape and warms the hearts of travelers walking down the streets.
As a result of pioneering townscape preservation efforts, it was designated as Japan’s first National Important Traditional Building Group Preservation District in 1976.
Unlike other preservation districts, a wide area including national forests was designated to preserve the entire environment that supported the post town, such as surrounding farmland.
Passing through the imposing wooden gate of Waki Honjin Okutani, one finds the quiet rooms where feudal lords and nobles once rested.
Meanwhile, the wooden boards inscribed with laws and regulations at the high-post field still convey the authority of the Edo shogunate, creating an imposing presence.
The road running through the post station has absorbed the footsteps of travelers over hundreds of years, conveying the weight of history to one’s feet.
The charm of Tsumago-juku is the “experience of traveling through time” where history, scenery, human warmth, and nature come together.
The breath of travelers from the Edo period still lingers in this post town.
