In this channel, we will introduce you while driving and walking around the famous places and historic sites of Okinawa that are not often introduced in the guidebook. There used to be a light railway between Yonabaru and Naha, and the Nishihara-Yonabaru area flourished as a key point of sea and land transportation in the central and southern part of the east coast of Okinawa Island. However, with the times, the means of transportation have changed, making it difficult to continue its former role. So, in an effort to bring back the former vitality through new urban development, Okinawa Prefecture, Nishihara Town, and Yonabaru Town jointly planned the Nakagusuku Bay Port Marine Town Project. One of the things created as part of this project is Marine Town Agarihama Park in Agarihama, Yonabaru Town. The park has a vast lawn, and within it is the Yonabaru Park Golf Course, an officially recognized course by the Japan Park Golf Association, and a plaza. There is also a gazebo in the park, and especially on the sea side, you can relax while feeling the sea breeze, so it is recommended for a short walk or when you want to relax. I took a walk around Marine Town Agarihama Park, which was built on reclaimed land. Marine Town Agarihama Park Administration Building The Nakagusuku Bay Port Marine Town Project is a project to reclaim land in the waterfront and develop a new town in order to revitalize the Nishihara-Yonabaru area, which was once a key transportation hub between sea and land. The Nakagusuku Bay Port Marine Town Project reclaimed 60 hectares in Nishihara Town and 82 hectares in Yonabaru Town, for a total of 142 hectares. In addition to residential areas, boat docks and marinas, many parks were also developed on the newly created land. Marine Town Agarihama Park is one of the parks that has been developed, with a total area of 3.8 hectares. The park includes a 1.5 hectare park golf course, as well as a plaza, administration building, parking lot and gazebo. The Chinen Peninsula can be seen in front of you. Looking at the aerial photo, it looks like there is a path that you can walk along the perimeter, but when I visited, vegetation was overgrown and blocking the path. Return to the circular path within the park. On the right is a plaza of about 0.5 hectares. The entire plaza is covered with grass, and there are three gazebos and rest benches placed here and there. The circular path within the park is 675m long, measured on Google Maps. There is also a path between the park golf course and the plaza. Climb up to the gazebo from which you can view the Itarashiki side. Here too, the path around the perimeter was covered with trees. Beyond the park you can see Yonabaru Marina and Yonabaru Boat Stop. Return to the circular path within the park. On your right is Yonabaru Park Golf Course, certified by the Nippon Park Golf Association. On the day of the video shoot, a typhoon was approaching and the wind was strong, but one group was enjoying playing park golf. A gazebo set up in the park golf course Surrounding the park golf course was a hedge of hibiscus, known in Okinawa as “akabanana.” The fee to use Yonabaru Park Golf Course varies depending on age and whether you are a resident or not. 西原与那原地区は、かつて那覇との間に軽便鉄道が走り、沖縄本島東海岸中南部で海上と陸上の交通の要所として栄えていました。
しかし時代の変化と共に交通手段が変わり、かつてのような役目を続ける事が難しくなっていました。
そこで新しいまちづくりを通して、かつての活気を取り戻そうと、沖縄県と西原町・与那原町が、共同で計画したのが中城湾港マリンタウンプロジェクトです。
そのプロジェクトにより作られたものの一つが、与那原町東浜にあるマリンタウン東浜公園です。
そんな埋立地に作られたマリンタウン東浜公園を散策してみました。
