夏の盛岡グルメ紀行☀️三大麺制覇と山川に囲まれた歴史散策｜岩手
Hello everyone! I’m Naru. I’ve come to Morioka in Iwate Prefecture, in the Tohoku region! Iwate Prefecture is composed of the Central Area, the Southern Area, the Northern Area, and the Coastal Area, making up four distinct areas. Each area has its own attractions. In the Central Area, there’s the great nature of Mt. Iwate, also known as Nanbu Fuji, and Hachimantai. The Southern Area has the World Heritage site “Hiraizumi,” “Hanamaki,” the hometown of Kenji Miyazawa, and “Tono,” the home of folk tales. The Northern Area has the World Heritage “Gosho Ruins.” And the Coastal Area has the stunning “Jodogahama Beach.” These famous tourist spots representing Iwate Prefecture are scattered throughout. Morioka, the center of the Central Area that we’re visiting this time, was featured in the New York Times’ “52 Places to Go in 2023,” chosen as the second-best place in the world after London. It’s a noteworthy city known to those in the know! Surrounded on all sides by beautiful mountains, the spectacular views of mountain ranges everywhere you look, and the retro Western-style buildings from the early Meiji era create a nostalgic townscape, forging a unique charm. Morioka is also a very convenient city for sightseeing. The main spots are clustered around the station, so even without a car, you can easily enjoy a walk around the city. And when you think of Morioka, you think of the Three Great Noodles of Morioka. “Wanko Soba,” enjoyed in small bowls, “Morioka Reimen,” with its unique firm texture and tang, and “Jaja-men,” served with a miso-based meat sauce. They symbolize the diverse food culture of this city. About access! Tokyo to Morioka is as fast as 2 hours and 10 minutes. For sightseeing within Morioka city, the loop bus that goes around the main spots, the “Denden-mushi,” is convenient! A one-day pass is ¥350, and it circles the city in about 35 minutes. This time, to escape the heat… lol we’ve come up north again! This is Morioka City in Iwate Prefecture. This time, we’re going to do some sightseeing in Morioka!♪ It’s a little hotter than I expected. It’s a little hot. For lunch, we’re having a Morioka specialty, Wanko Soba! I wonder how much I can eat? Well, I’ll do my best!! At Soba-dokoro Azumaya, founded in 1907, one of Morioka’s Three Great Noodles, Wanko Soba, can be enjoyed to your heart’s content! You raise your bowl, and they pour the soba in for you! It’s surprisingly little! This is a piece of cake! This is making me nervous! lol This is easy! A piece of cake! They put the soba in for you with a cheer♪ As I keep eating… Huh???? I’m full! It’s starting to get a little tough… lol I don’t think I can do any more. When should I stop… lol How many bowls now? Maybe 40…? I can eat them because they’re small, but I want to stop now! lol I can eat it because it’s soba, but… I’m so full!! But I’ll keep eating to beat the record!!! The record is 41 bowls!!
The average for women is apparently 30, so that’s pretty good? They have other items on the menu besides Wanko Soba♪ Built in 1911 as the head office of the Morioka Bank, the Iwate Bank Red Brick Building. It was designed by Tatsuno-Kasai Architectural Design Office, the same firm as Tokyo Station, and as an architectural work by Kingo Tatsuno, it’s the only remaining precious work in the Tohoku region. It looks European! Even from the outside, it looks so cool, right? It’s so stylish. It feels like it must have been state-of-the-art! This was actually a working Iwate Bank. That’s amazing! You can tour the inside, and the inside was just as gorgeous as the outside. The inside was magnificent too! If I could work in a place like this, I’d be so motivated. Don’t you think? In the Meiji era… I’d love to work inside an Important Cultural Property! The Kitakami River, Nakatsu River, and Shizukuishi River— three rivers converge in Morioka City! The clear streams run through the city center, and along the rivers, there are historic buildings and beautiful bridges scattered about. The Nakatsu River is so beautiful, isn’t it? Walking along the Nakatsu River is really pretty. You can stroll here. Everyone is doing it! This bridge was built over the Nakatsu River at the same time Morioka Castle was constructed by Toshinao, the second lord of the Nanbu clan. Developed along the Oshu Kaido road since the Edo period, it was a castle town where dye houses using the Nakatsu River gathered, flourishing as “Konyacho” (Dyer’s Town)! Gozaku: a merchant house founded in 1816. You know, in Konyacho, it’s nice that old buildings like this are still here and there. Yeah! The area around the station is urban, but these old things remain too. It’s a mix. There are rivers too, so it’s mixed with nature as well. Built in 1891 as the “Morioka Fire Department ‘Yo’ Group Guardhouse,” and rebuilt in 1913 as the “Fire Brigade 4th Division Office.” Currently, it houses a general store and a cafe♪ Topped with strawberry syrup and condensed milk!!🤤 Construction of Morioka Castle was started by Lord Nobunao Nanbu in 1597, and it was completed after 36 years. The castle was decommissioned in 1874, and was reborn as Morioka Castle Ruins Park in 1906! The stone walls remaining in Morioka Castle Ruins Park are made of white granite from Morioka, which is rare in the Tohoku region. The beautiful stone walls are a major attraction, and you can compare the different stone-stacking techniques from various eras, making it a precious historical heritage site! We’ve made it to the top! It was quite a climb because it’s so hot. There are a lot of maple trees. The autumn leaves must be amazing! The cherry blossoms probably look beautiful too! The Morioka Castle ruins, you know, are one of the three great castles of the Tohoku region! Do you know what the others are? Aizu-Wakamatsu! My brain is foggy from the heat… lol Wrong? The one in Aizu-Wakamatsu? Tsuruga Castle! Tsuruga Castle and? I don’t know! You’d never guess! Because we’ve never been. Shirakawa Komine Castle in Fukushima Prefecture. I’ve never been either, so I didn’t know! Morioka Castle, Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle, and Shirakawa Komine Castle. The statue behind me… There used to be a statue of the 42nd lord of the Nanbu clan on top of it. In 1944, it was requisitioned for war materials, and now only the pedestal remains. This pedestal is huge. Since it’s this big, the statue on top must have been quite large too. It’s a shame. It’s terrible that it was taken away! We’re taking a break at a cafe near Morioka Castle Ruins Park! The atmosphere of the cafe is really nice! It’s so retro♪ It’s cute, isn’t it? This drink! Isn’t the glass so cute!! It’s a goblet! I can’t believe a place like this exists! And the amount of melon soda is insane!! They brought a huge amount. I’ve never seen this much before. It’s a lot to drink. And the parfait!! This is also a work of art. It’s piled high with fruit, and has chocolate drizzled on it. Let’s eat quickly. Let’s eat. Mmm! This kind of parfait is the best! The absolute best! The absolute best! Paradise? This is paradise! It’s about a 10-minute walk from Morioka Station♪ It’s lukewarm. Let’s go get something to eat! What’s for dinner today? Today, it’s one of Morioka’s Three Great Noodles, Reimen (cold noodles)! Are you planning to conquer all three great noodles? I’ll do my best. Since reimen is the main event this time, let’s eat the reimen. While we’re hungry! There’s a huge piece of watermelon in it! Watermelon in reimen is unusual! At a Yakiniku restaurant, reimen is the star! The noodles are quite translucent! Delicious!! Wow! It goes down so smoothly! It just slides right down! The noodles are a bit chewy. The texture is delicious! It’s a little spicy, but not spicy at all! I could eat this easily! What’s the soup like? The soup is, well, it’s kimchi! lol It tastes like kimchi! lol Can I try the watermelon? Eating the watermelon makes it so refreshing! It’s not weird at all. They’re one and the same!! The watermelon and the reimen are one and the same! lol Open more than 300 days a year, it’s a permanent morning market, which is rare nationwide! Hittsumi! We’re at the morning market! Shall we eat some hittsumi? Any of them are recommended. How about the octopus rice? We also bought an octopus rice ball!! We get to eat it freshly made!! Look how big it is. What’s hittsumi? Is it mochi? I think it’s made from wheat flour. A dish where flour kneaded with water is stretched thin by hand, torn, and simmered in a soy sauce-based broth with other ingredients. This is so chewy. It looks that way! The texture is smooth! So, it goes down smoothly! Delicious!! The local dialect for “to tear by hand” is “hittsumu,” which is how “Hittsumi” got its name! I could eat bowls and bowls of this! It’s great for the morning. You can taste the octopus, it’s delicious. Also, eating outside after waking up early feels like a nice added spice. And it’s cool in the morning! There was a lot of stuff, right? There were fried foods too. They sold side dishes too! Not just vegetables! There were things like croquettes and oden. Let’s start the day with some amazake♪ Fukuda Pan, founded in 1948, is known for its large, soft, and moist koppepan rolls, where you can choose your favorite fillings from about 50 different kinds in a custom-order style! After much deliberation, I bought the “An-butter” (red bean paste and butter)!! We’ve arrived at Kaiunbashi Bridge!! You can see Mt. Iwate! We couldn’t see it at all yesterday, but we can see a little bit today. It’s huge, as expected. It’s one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains! I know that! Volcanic alert level is 2, access to the mountain is restricted! This river is beautiful too. It’s a different river from yesterday. One of the three great rivers? The Kitakami River? Not three great rivers, but three rivers flow here, and this is one of them! The Kitakami River. There’s a walking space here too, it feels nice! Okay, the bread we bought, let’s eat it somewhere. Yeah! There isn’t a single bench down here! How about over there in the shade? It’s a combination of red bean paste and butter. The classic combo. The classic combo. It was listed as the number one most popular! It’s quite heavy. It’s big!! It’s bigger than my hand. Delicious!! Delicious!! This bread is surprisingly filling. It’s not just fluffy. It’s something you can really chew and enjoy. It has a bit of firmness too. This is a spot where you can take a picture with Mt. Iwate♪ Established in 1680 by the 29th Lord of the Nanbu clan, Shigenobu, Morioka Hachimangu Shrine is the main tutelary shrine of Morioka, with over 300 years of history! It enshrines deities of agriculture, industry, commerce, and learning, the fundamental sources of human life. We’ve arrived at Morioka Hachimangu Shrine. What do you think? It’s nice! It says “Natsumode” (summer shrine visit), and the sound of the wind chimes is so lovely. It creates a cool atmosphere. Look at that hall of worship! It’s so ornate. It’s vermilion, with gold decorations, it’s magnificent. Is it new? It was rebuilt in December 1997! This shrine is surprisingly large. There are 12 shrines on the grounds! There was a sign on the grounds with fortunes written on it! What did it say? What was it again? About money, it said to keep a tight hold on your purse strings!! We have to be careful. Even though we’re in the red every month… lol Spending is out of control and in the red every month! lol How long can this last… lol Well, let’s pray and hope our luck improves. At least let’s pray that “expenses = income”!🙏 lol My right hand is a Nanbu ironware kettle!! What about Naru’s right hand? Nanbu ironware!! We’re comrades! Is this a local mascot character? You know, it’s mixed with the miso and has turned brown! The noodles are quite thick too! Aren’t they thick? It’s different from ramen. It’s like udon! Delicious! The miso and ginger come through, it’s so delicious!! It’s different from any noodle dish I’ve had before. A completely different taste! Is it like udon? The miso is quite dark, so I thought it might be strong, but it’s not strong at all! It’s just right!! The noodles are smooth and they slide right down. You leave some noodles, add an egg, and have the staff pour in the broth. And your “Chi-tan-tan” is complete!! It had a light flavor and was delicious♪ That was delicious♪ Did you have your fill of Morioka? We conquered the Three Great Noodles of Morioka, and visited the tourist spots too! So for the last thing, let’s pay a visit to Sakurayama Shrine before we go home! When we travel, we tend to visit the local shrines and temples! lol Eboshi-iwa (Eboshi Rock) Thank you for watching!

わんこ蕎麦は、心ゆくまで味わえる感じなんですか😅 盛岡は行った事がありません。三大麺も平泉で盛岡冷麺を食べた事があるだけです。旧岩手銀行は写真で見て、ぅわっ！と感じるものがあって、絵を描いた事があります。 盛岡は南部鉄器の南部藩なんですね。ここの朝市も、ひっつみも知らないです😅 知らない事だらけ。盛岡八幡宮はこんなに立派なんですね。

盛岡市に行ったことはありませんが、岩手銀行レンガ館は東京駅に似てますね、街並みも大正ロマンあふれる時代に戻ったようです。南部藩藩主の銅像は戦時中に没収され台座のまま復活してあげないのかな～! 毎回なるまさトラベルではゆく先々の歴史を知る機会になります。岩手山が噴火警戒レベル上がって山頂まで登れないの知りませんでした。数年前に登って良かった,あの火口の雄大さが見れないのは残念、今回も街並み､歴史､食べ物,風景など,その土地の魅力を知りました。 お疲れ様でした。

I enjoyed visiting Morioka in the summer with you Naru-san and Masa-san. We were there in March for 2 nights, and it was of course totally different in terms of weather. We were lucky to see Mount Iwate covered in snow very clearly from the kaiunbashi bridge, it was beautiful, and everybody stopped to take a picture, even locals. From Morioka, we did a day trip to Hiraizumi, which was great.
