This time, I explored Yuasa Town in Wakayama Prefecture. This historically rich region is known as the birthplace of traditional Japanese soy sauce production and thrived as a lodging station along the ancient pilgrimage route, the Kumano Kodo. It has preserved its old townscape. Soy sauce production began with the introduction of “Kinzanji Miso” during the Kamakura period, and the area developed mainly through its brewing industry. The preservation district features traditional buildings, including white-walled storehouses, lattice doors, and windows shaped like insect cages, which stand in rows and offer a fascinating atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Additionally, the public bathhouse Jinburo, which operated from the Edo period until about 40 years ago, now serves as a historical and folk museum. Visitors can experience retro-style baths and admire nostalgic items like old utensils and tools.
