To get there, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line to Kokusai Kaikan Station, then take Kyoto Bus Route 19 from the bus stop in front of the station and get off at the Ohara bus stop (about 20 minutes). What a cute bus stop (*´ω｀*) Sanzenin Temple, located in the quiet mountain village of Ohara, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, is a temple with a relaxing moss garden, a historic Buddha statue, and beautiful seasonal scenery. Ohara is also known as a major producer of red shiso (red perilla). Red shiso, especially harvested from June to July, has a very rich flavor, aroma, and color, and is used in a variety of processed products such as umeboshi, shiso juice, and furikake. The approach to the temple is lined with quaint streets lined with souvenir shops and cafes. Ajikobo Shino: A popular dressing and ponzu specialty shop along the approach to the temple . Sanzenin Temple Originated as a small hermitage built by Saicho (Dengyo Daishi) during the Heian period, the temple has a history of being headed by members of the imperial family and aristocrats for generations. It was moved to its current location during the Meiji period, and the name “Sanzen” comes from the Tendai teaching “Ichinen Sanzen (Everything resides in the heart)”. Jakkoin admission fee: 600 yen (adult) Jakkoin dates back to the Asuka period. It is a historic nunnery that is said to have been built by Prince Shotoku during the reign of Empress Suiko. One of the most famous is Kenreimon’in Tokuko, the daughter of Taira no Kiyomori. It is said that after the Heike clan was defeated in the Battle of Dannoura, she spent the rest of her life here in deep sorrow. For this reason, it has come to be loved by many people as a “temple that heals women’s sorrows.” Jakkoin is also known as the birthplace of Ohara’s specialty “shibazuke.” When villagers presented Kenreimon’in, who retired to Jakkoin, with pickled summer vegetables , Kenreimon’in was so pleased that he named the eggplant and red shiso pickles “shibazuke.” “Ohara Sanso Footbath Cafe” This is a footbath cafe located right next to Jakkoin.
