【大分】日田祇園祭 豆田町編 2025年7月27日

The Hita Gion Festival on July 27, 2025, featured a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession and a parade of floats. Hita Gion, a traditional summer event with a history spanning approximately 300 years, is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site, with eight floats parading through the city. On the day, the floats make a circuit of their respective neighborhoods (chonai-oshi), make an offering to Gion Shrine, and then parade along a designated route following the mikoshi. This festival, which prays for peace and prosperity by warding off epidemics and natural disasters, features gorgeous floats parading through the streets of the Kuma, Takeda, and Mameda districts, accompanied by the sounds of Gion music. This time, we’ll take a look at the Mameda district. Some floats are over 10 meters tall, and their splendor and splendor are truly impressive. The “farewell banner” is a hanging curtain measuring approximately 3m high and 1.5m wide that decorates the back of the Yamahoko, while the “mizuhiki banner” is a curtain that surrounds the float. Each Yamahoko is fitted with a pair of farewell banners and mizuhiki banners. Currently, 18 farewell banners remain in the city, and are carefully kept by each Yamahoko and town. The farewell banners and mizuhiki banners are made of raglan fabric and embroidered with gold and silver threads, featuring designs such as tigers and dragons. Some of the oldest ones date back to the Tenpo era and are still in use in parades today!
