First, let’s look at the layout of the city of Sapporo on a map. Here is the starting point, JR Sapporo Station. Then, Odori Park with its towering TV Tower,
the bustling Tanukikoji Shopping Street, and the nightlife district Susukino. One of the characteristics of Sapporo is that the city is laid out
in a grid pattern like a Go board… But did you know that overall the city is tilted about 9 degrees to the west? This subtle tilt is deeply related to Sapporo’s history. Going back to the Meiji era, when the Hokkaido Development Commission planned the city of Sapporo, they used the Otomo Canal — today’s Sosei River — as a reference. Actually, this river was hand-dug for about 4 kilometers as an agricultural waterway by Otomo Kametarou, a disciple of Ninomiya Sontoku (Kinjiro), around the end of the Edo period. This later became the Sosei River,
which was the “beginning” of the city of Sapporo. And although the river was supposed to run north-south,
it is actually tilted about 9 degrees to the west. Because the town blocks were arranged based on this river,
the central area of Sapporo is naturally tilted at the same angle. In other words, the Sosei River is the “guidepost” of Sapporo,
and also the reference point for the city’s layout. Moreover, the river divides the city east and west, and Odori Park divides it north and south. All Sapporo addresses are determined based on these two references. For example, if it says “Minami 1-jo Nishi 1-chome” (South 1 West 1), it means “one block south from Odori Park and one block west from Sosei River.” If you know this, you can quickly figure out where you are
even without a map, making sightseeing much easier. Also, the Sosei River used to be a very active canal, carrying goods by boat and supporting the development of Sapporo. That’s why near the Sosei River is the Nijo Market, where fresh seafood gathers, and around it formed the Tanukikoji Shopping Street arcade, continuing for over 150 years. The city of Sapporo is a perfect blend of nature and history, and the lives of its people come together to form its shape. By the way, if you ever get lost, it’s very useful to use the TV Tower as a reference —
how far and in what direction you are from it. Now, let’s finally take a look at Sapporo’s sightseeing spots one by one! First, the starting point of Sapporo sightseeing: JR Sapporo Station. Did you know there is a scenic spot directly connected to Sapporo Station? That is the JR Tower Observation Deck T38. From the 6th floor of the shopping mall “JR Tower” at Sapporo Station,
take a dedicated elevator to the top floor, the 38th floor. In just a few dozen seconds, you reach 160 meters above ground,
the highest observation deck in Hokkaido. Before your eyes unfolds a 360-degree panoramic view of Sapporo! To the north is Ishikari Bay, to the south, the dazzling night view of Sapporo’s grid-like cityscape. And if the weather is good, you can see the mountains to the east, and to the west, you can see Mt. Teine. Especially recommended is the time from dusk to night, when city lights start to sparkle one by one —
a luxurious spot to quietly enjoy the moment. And surprisingly, there is the “view toilet.” The men’s restroom on the northeast side is fully glass-walled, offering an overwhelming sense of openness all to yourself! Inside the observation deck, you can enjoy artworks by famous Hokkaido designers, and healing sounds created from the scales of planets in space. The atmosphere is calm and soothing for both sight and hearing. On the south side is “T’CAFE,” where you can relax with cappuccino and cakes. At night, you can enjoy over 30 kinds of cocktails and wines —
a true “bar in the sky.” Sipping a drink quietly while viewing the Sapporo nightscape is exceptional. Next, the Red Brick Government Building. Hokkaido Government Office Building (Former Main Office)
700m from Sapporo Station, 9 minutes on foot. Next up is the beloved landmark of Sapporo, the “Former Hokkaido Government Office,” commonly called the “Red Brick Building.” This American Neo-Baroque style building was completed in 1888 (Meiji 21). The solid design made of red bricks is beautiful from every angle! In fact, this building has been repaired each time it was damaged by war and fire, preserving over 130 years of precious history. You can also enjoy the museum room and exhibitions introducing Hokkaido’s history and culture. In spring it is surrounded by flowers, autumn brings colorful leaves, and winter brings snowy scenery… The changing seasons give it different expressions, which is also charming. The atmosphere is like wandering into a Western town. This is a spot you absolutely must visit when you come to Sapporo. Inside is also “Shiroi Koibito Akarenga Sweets Labo” produced by ISHIYA. Sapporo Clock Tower
750m from Sapporo Station, 11 minutes on foot. The unfortunate Sapporo Clock Tower, known as one of Japan’s “three biggest disappointments.” 11 minutes on foot from Sapporo Station. An essential historic spot for sightseeing in Sapporo. Although it’s called one of Japan’s “three biggest disappointments,” it is actually a place full of history and charm! It is called “disappointing” because it’s smaller than expected, surrounded by buildings. But that is proof it has been keeping time in the middle of the city for many years! Its official name is the “Former Sapporo Agricultural College Drill Hall.” Built in 1878 as a facility of Sapporo Agricultural College, the predecessor of Hokkaido University. In 1881, an American-made pendulum clock was installed. Amazingly, it has been keeping accurate time for over 130 years! Inside is a museum with the lecture hall preserved as it was in the Meiji era, and exhibits where you can learn about the pioneering history. At night, it is also illuminated. The white walls and red roof glow in a fantastic way. Especially in winter, standing in the snow, it is truly a symbol of Sapporo! If you want to take a commemorative photo,
actually the view from the building across the street is recommended. You might think, “Isn’t it a nuisance to take photos from another building?” Don’t worry — this is an officially recommended spot. Most people don’t know this, haha. Please leave a special photo as a memorable keepsake of your trip! Odori Park and Sapporo TV Tower
