The island ferns thriving in quiet light Here in the heart of Uken Village,
layers of green breathe in silence. Crystal-clear waters
gently embrace all living things. Bathed in tropical air,
beneath sunlight filtering through the trees— this is a place
Amami has cherished and protected for generations. Listen closely—
the forest is breathing. A powerful epiphytic fern
grows upon rocks and tree trunks. Native to the island,
Shima Otaniwatari has long been part of everyday life. Its fronds can stretch beyond one meter—
unfolding like great green wings. Water holds the memory of the forest—
gently flowing, quietly nourishing all life. Shima Otaniwatari
is a rare fern classified as Vulnerable (VU) on Japan’s Red List. May the stillness of this forest
become a light that gently heals the soul. Recognized by UNESCO in 2021, Amami Oshima is a
World Natural Heritage island known for its rare wildlife
and subtropical forests. A peaceful island sanctuary,
where nature welcomes you— this is Amami Oshima.
