Hachijo Island Hello, everyone! This is Active Lifestyle. This channel visited Hachijojima Island on the weekend of June 2025 and spent two days and one night visiting approximately 20 tourist attractions and gourmet spots. Based on our impressions, we will announce the top 15 highlights of our trip to Hachijojima! If you are planning a trip to Hachijojima, please check it out! First, we’ll announce the top 10! In 10th place is the shiitake mushroom farm featured on “The Iron Arm DASH!!” Oryu Farm is a shiitake mushroom farm where you can experience harvesting shiitake mushrooms. Instead of using logs, we cultivate shiitake mushrooms using domestically produced wood chips as the main raw material. 15 00:01:36,230 –> 00:01:42,220 Hachijojima Island has high humidity, which accelerates the growth of shiitake mushrooms. At Daoryu Farm, you can enjoy a harvesting experience for 4,300 yen for two people. The shop staff will teach you how to identify good shiitake mushrooms and how to harvest them. In about 20 minutes, we were able to harvest about 1.3 kg. Fureai Bokujo is a spot with a spectacular view located halfway up Mt. Hachijo-Fuji. At an altitude of about 850 meters above sea level, you can see the entire island of Hachijo on a clear day You can see black Japanese cattle grazing leisurely. Hachijojima, with its warm and humid climate, is famous for producing the largest amount of ashitaba in Japan. At this factory, you can tour the inside of the factory by making a reservation in advance. This machine steams ashitaba and shaves it into thin slices. Steamed ashitaba has a bitter yet sweet taste and is delicious. Yellow Hachijo is a high-quality silk product that can only be woven at a rate of about 10 cm per hour. At Meyu Workshop, you can see craftsmen demonstrating the loom. Unfortunately, it was cloudy when I visited, but the view on a clear day is spectacular. This hot spring is used daily by local residents of the Sueyoshi district. There is a local rule that you must press the counter when entering. The snorkeling destination is the Soto Coast in the northern part of the island. Soto is a beach entry spot with excellent visibility. This is an area where you can see the “bright blue” of Hachijo Blue. A large school of long, silver fish called “datsu.” You can swim with red sea turtles and enjoy yourself to your heart’s content. Third place goes to Sakashita Shuzo, a brewery of Hachijo-jima shochu. Sakashita Shuzo is a brewery of high-quality authentic shochu with a history of 100 years. On the day of the event, we were welcomed by President Okiyama, who gave us a tour of the brewery. Kuroshio and Jonali are Sakashita Shuzo’s signature products. In this rotating drum, malted barley is inoculated with koji mold. The malted barley is then transferred from the rotating drum to this triangular rack. The malted barley is made in this triangular rack over a period of 42 hours. In this tank, water and yeast are added to the malted barley to make mash. Mash is being made right now, and you can hear the sound of fermentation. It’s an exciting sound that you don’t get to hear very often. The finished mash is distilled in a distillation pot under normal pressure to make shochu. Therefore, except during the manufacturing period, they welcome tourists to visit the shop. Freshness is crucial, so the fish are transported to the processing facility immediately after being caught and undergo preliminary processing. Then, they are soaked in Kusaya liquid, which has been used since the Meiji era, for several hours. After soaking, it is rinsed in fresh water to reduce salt content and odor. Finally, it is dried in an indoor dryer for several days to complete the process. Kusaya is a traditional food that has been made since the Edo period, but Mr. Nagata, the shop owner, is concerned about the disappearance of kusaya due to a decrease in the catch. Mount Hachijo-Fuji stands at 854 meters above sea level and is named for its shape. Park at the parking lot at the 7th station and begin your climb. The elevation difference between the trailhead and the summit is approximately 400 meters, which is climbed via 1,280 steps. We’ve reached the summit! The view overlooking the caldera is spectacular. We will now spend an hour walking around the 1.8 km crater rim. The crater rim walk has little elevation change, but the path is narrow. Along the way, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the island! The path, which feels like you’re walking in the sky, is called the “Sky Path.” Be careful, as there are some dangerous spots where you could slip and fall. Next, we will announce the top 11. In 11th place is a guesthouse with a convenient location and a stylish atmosphere. This coastline is a basalt lava plateau formed by lava flowing into the sea. It boasts a magnificent scale of approximately 500 m in length and 100 m in width. The 13th place is a performance of a traditional dance passed down on Hachijojima Island. Kashidate Odori is a traditional dance passed down in the Kashidate district of Hachijojima Island. The 14th place is the historical stone wall remaining in the Oga district of Hachijojima Island. During the Edo period, exiles carried round stones from the shore and built these walls. This technique is called “6-sided stacking,” in which six stones are placed around one stone. The 15th place is a new facility that opened in April 2025. This museum was opened after renovating a closed elementary school. It is an experiential exchange facility where you can learn about nature, culture, and daily life through your five senses. You can learn about the ecology of sea turtles and whales in Hachijo Island through videos and specimens. The footage of Hachijo Blue explains marine diversity and fishing culture. This classroom displays the history of volcanic eruptions and island formation. That concludes our Top 15 highlights from a two-day, one-night visit to Hachijojima.
