Hoping to resist the heat of summer, I headed to Gora in Hakone. From Hakone-Yumoto Station, I transferred to the Hakone Tozan Railway. A commenter told me it was the “Hydrangea Train.” (Even at the end of July, it still had its charm!) People transferred from Gora to the cable car. Gora was peaceful during the weekday afternoon. First, I headed for lunch. This cafe is run by Tamura Ginkatsutei, famous for its tofu cutlet stew. The breeze was cooler than in Tokyo, perfect for a terrace. The crispy fried cutlets and generous portions were very satisfying. The cicadas’ chirping, even in my sleep mode, was soothing. Gin Tofu, the company that makes Ginkatsutei’s tofu, was temporarily closed (I wanted to eat some smooth tofu). There’s also a souvenir shop in front of the station. I was drawn to the piping hot spring buns (I was full). The menu made me want to drink beer. As expected of a high-end hot spring resort, there were taxis stationed in front of the station. It was nice to know the approximate fare. Meanwhile, I headed to the bus stop to catch my bus. All the shuttle buses to the hotel seem to use the same stop. My bus arrived. It’s the free bus to the Pola Museum of Art. I tried to buy a ticket on the bus, but gave up because I had to enter so much personal information (it’s a pain). Actually, my card was almost used fraudulently, so I just had to get a new one. This happens every few years, so I need to make it more difficult to enter my card number. Even in the exhibition room, I like how the words pose strong questions. There were works by Van Gogh and works inspired by him. I also enjoyed Ryan Gander’s art. The Pola Forest Promenade, my favorite part of this trip, was the forest where art and nature coexist. The deep green, the breeze blowing through, and the unexpected art that appears are delightful. This is a gift from nature and time. Roni Horn’s “Sky Burial.” I was captivated by its mysterious transparency. I returned to the Gora Station area for tea. “Hakone Forest Pancakes” is temporarily closed for a while. This cafe offers Japanese tea at the counter only. The tea utensils and the craftsmanship are refined and captivating. I ordered cold tea and cheesecake. After all that walking, green tea soothes the body. I wanted to relax, but I was a little impatient when I looked at the cable car timetable. Why is it that solo travelers are always rushing? Apparently there’s a great footbath spot at Sounzan Station, and since I’m in Hakone, I wanted to enjoy a hot spring. The cable car didn’t accept my transportation card. Then I realized I’d lost my wide-angle lens. Where did I drop it? I turned my bag over in the car, but I couldn’t find it… I arrived still reeling from the loss. This was the second time I’d lost my wide-angle lens… I decided to soothe myself in the footbath. But then I realized it was closed! It was open until 5 PM (and it was now 5:05 PM). The footbath was under this circular table. I was so shocked, I staggered out of the station. It was a breathtaking view, cleansing my soul. I hope I don’t lose anything again this year (a faint prayer). The ropeway was still running after hours. I discovered a bus stop just off the ropeway. I realized it would be easier and faster to take the bus home. It was the kind of bus stop where Totoro would hold an umbrella for me. It wasn’t the Cat Bus, but the Izu Hakone Bus that arrived. I passed Hakone-Yumoto Station and headed to Odawara. Wanting a quick drink before heading home, I headed to the third-floor terrace. It seemed to have a food court, too. There was plenty of space to relax. I was in the mood for a terrace seat, so I went for a corn stick and a beer. A quiet toast! The corn was generously kneaded into the food. Suddenly, the table was a mess. Now that I’d calmed down, I decided to organize my bag. And lo and behold, I found my wide-angle lens. It was magnetic, so it stuck to the metal fittings. Finding my lost item made the summer night breeze even more pleasant. I feel like I can work hard again tomorrow.
