Misato Town, Shimomashiki District Explanation of Natsumi Rice Terraces The Horaoka area of Misato Town, Shimomashiki District, is a mountain village sandwiched between the Midorikawa Dam Lake to the north and the 997m-high Mt. Horagadake to the south, and the dam lake hills. The village, located at an altitude of about 200m, has beautiful terraced rice fields of about 18 hectares that take advantage of the gentle slope of the mountain foothills and spread out towards the dam lake. The Yamaide River, a tributary of the Midori River, flows through the east side of this area, bringing clean water from the mountains. It’s easy to imagine that clean water is the place where high-quality rice is grown. On the opposite bank of the Yamaide River are the beautiful Shimofukura Rice Terraces. As you can see, there are so many rice terraces scattered around the dam lake that it can be called a “treasure trove of rice terraces.” Let’s take off! Today, I am on the south side of Midorikawa Dam Lake in Misato Town, Shimomashiki District. In any case, this is an area with many beautiful rice terraces.
