【週末気軽旅】鶴ヶ城と白虎隊、火口絶景の浄土平、会津若松の食と文化をめぐる旅
Hello, I’ve finished my Friday work and I’m heading to Fukushima Prefecture. Today’s ekiben is grilled mackerel sushi. The rice is mixed with wasabi, and it was delicious! With the ekiben and a beer, the “travel switch” flips on—best moment! I’ve arrived at Koriyama Station. It’s lively in front of the station. A festival was going on. I’m staying overnight in Koriyama today. Tonight’s accommodation. It’s a classic business hotel, very relaxing. Good night. Good morning. The summer sun is already intense. I’ve rented a car and I’m off! Heading from Koriyama to Aizu-Wakamatsu. I’ve arrived at Tsuruga Castle. Tsuruga Castle (Wakamatsu Castle) was a battleground in the Boshin War. I’m going to tour the main keep. At the Shiokura storehouse you can see the stone walls up close. Among the areas of Tsuruga Castle, the stone walls of Shiokura retain their Edo-period appearance and are precious. Inside the keep is set up like a museum, where you can learn about the castle’s history and the Boshin War. From the top-floor observatory you can overlook the entire town. The Tsuruga Castle ticket also includes entry to the Rinkaku tea house. The red roof tiles stand out beautifully against the summer blue sky. I’ve come to Iimoriyama, associated with the Byakkotai. I’d like to climb the stairs, but it’s too hot, so I’ll ride the moving slope. It’s worth the 250 yen. I’ve reached the summit. This is the grave of the 19 Byakkotai soldiers. These 16- to 17-year-old boy soldiers mistakenly thought Tsuruga Castle was burning and are said to have taken their own lives. This is the spot where they died. The stone statues of the soldiers look toward Tsuruga Castle. Was this the last view they saw? Sazae-dō, with its mysterious double-helix structure. It’s one-way, so the ascent and descent never meet— a rare wooden building in the world. I’m getting hungry, so heading for lunch. Lunch is wappa-meshi, an Aizu specialty. Packed with salmon, salmon roe, mushrooms, crab, and more— it was delicious! The shop had a charming vibe and great, attentive service. Now we’re at Amida-ji Temple. Amida-ji is a cemetery honoring those who died on the shogunate side (incl. the Aizu clan) in the Boshin War. Many Aizu warriors, including the 19 Byakkotai youths, rest here. It also houses the grave of Shinsengumi 3rd-unit captain Saitō Hajime. We’ll stroll a bit along Nanukamachi Street. It was too hot to cover it all, but the street feels calm and relaxed. After soaking in history, time for some epic nature. First, a quick break at Michi-no-Eki Aizu. This is what I came for— milk gelato and strawberry gelato. So good! They’ve got an insane cucumber lineup. Guess cucumbers are a local specialty? And of course, Akabeko merch everywhere. Might as well grab some Akabeko sweets for souvenirs. Break’s over—let’s roll. We’re gaining altitude. There it is. Arrived at Jōdodaira. Climbing Azuma-Kofuji. Pretty exhausting. Made it to the summit. Can you feel the scale? Amazing. People down there look like dots. You can sense the breath of an active volcano. I see smoke—probably volcanic gas. You can walk the whole rim, but no time today. The view down is fantastic— blue sky, green trees, and vivid mountain contrasts. Nice and cool up here. Heading back down. Serious warning signs everywhere. Feels like we’re outside Japan. Found a gorgeous valley on the way. Looks like it’s called Tsubakuro Valley. A deep gorge stretches under the bridge. Back to Kōriyama. One last stop before the shinkansen. Capping the trip with local craft beer. Tasting three Fukushima brews—so good. Ordered some jingisukan too! Both beer and jingisukan were delicious! This trip was a one-day blast of history and nature. Fukushima is huge, and we didn’t even hit Lake Inawashiro, so I’ll definitely be back!
