Japan Travel Guide: Nasu, Tochigi, nearby getaways and day trips from Tokyo to nature, architecture

[Music] All right. So, in this video, we are getting out of the city and we are going up north to the forests of Tochigi Prefecture for some cool sites, good architecture, and some tasty food. So, let’s go. Toiki Prefecture is located just north of Tokyo Prefecture. So, you can visit these sites on a day trip while you’re staying in Tokyo. However, I would recommend staying within the prefecture to make the best use of your time. So, today we’re checking out five architecture spots. One, Modu Library. Two, the Stone Museum. Three, Nasio History Museum. Four, Art Bio. And finally, the Nakagawa Machi B Hiroshi Museum of Art. From Tokyo, we’re going to hop on the Shinkansen and go all the way up to Nasushio Station. Our first stop is right beside the station, Mudu Library. [Music] The library feels like a forest of books. The roof planes folding like varying heights of trees in the forest. The bookshelves are porous and they filter light and space like foliage that creates space within the forest. The library is a great place for families with children, students looking for a quiet place to focus and for travelers soaking in the culture and community knowledge. Now it’s time for lunch and the neighborhood has a lot of cafes and bakeries. But instead of wheat, this time we’re getting buckwheat at the local SOA noodle shop. On our way out, we caught the smell of freshly steamed onenu and this made the perfect dessert. [Music] Our next stop is the stone museum. [Music] Stone is traditionally seen as a very thick, heavy, and hard material. This project challenges that by making stone seem thin, light, and even porous where light can filter through. [Music] Nearby is the Nasashio History Museum. This building exhibits local materials beyond stone such as straw, plaster, and paper. The overall architecture is a very good example of how Japanese architecture uses paracity, lightness, and staggered planes to create a blurred boundary between inside and outside. Our next stop is Arc Biotop. The design saves and relocates a grove of trees that would have been chopped down on the adjacent property. Every single tree was inventoried and relocated amongst a collection of rounded water ponds. The garden is a great example of creating artificial space using natural elements. The facility also has a pottery studio, restaurant, and art hotel if you feel like experiencing more. So, a little bit far from the other locations, but definitely still worth a visit is the Nakagawa Machi Bad Hiroshik Museum of Art. The entrance beautifully frames the forest behind the building, and the thin louvers mimic the thinness of the trees in the surrounding forest. The wood louvers were decaying and were recently replaced by aluminum louvers. However, I still think that the building is worth a visit. Also, if you like subterranean architecture, check out the nearby Shimazaki Cave Brewery for some spelunking and good sake. All right, and we’re hungry again. So, for food, we’re going to get buckwheat noodles again, but this time we found a restaurant that basically only has buckwheat. Um, they have buckwheat noodles, buckwheat chiffon cake, and buckwheat cookies. I’ve had enough buckwheat for a while now, but it was good. [Music] All right, there you have it. That is just a handful of some of the places that I have for you guys for Nasushio and the Tochi Prefecture area. I hope that you appreciate Japanese architecture a bit more and that you found some new places that you want to visit and explore. So until next time, sleep. Cheers. [Music]
