There are three theories about the origin of the Hamaori Festival, with the third theory being the most likely. In 1838 or 1840, a mikoshi (portable shrine) from Samukawa Shrine was returning from the Konomachi Festival, which is held every spring in Oiso, when a dispute arose between the parishioners of Samukawa Shrine in Ichinomiya and Maedori Shrine in Shinomiya at a ferry crossing on the Sagami River, causing the mikoshi to fall into the river and go missing. A few days later, Suzuki Magoshichi, a fishing boss from Nanko, discovered the deity while fishing and brought it to Samukawa Shrine, which led to the portable shrine of Samukawa Shrine being carried out for a “misogi” ritual on the shores of Nanko. The dispute went to court, and the magistrate sentenced 16 parishioners of Shinomiya to death by beheading, but on the day of their execution, the topknot was cut off in place of the beheading. The “Topknot Tomb” was built in Enoki-cho, Hiratsuka City.

According to the “Shinpen Sagami no Kuni Fudoki-ko,” compiled by the Shoheikoku Geography Bureau of the shogunate in the late Edo period, the portable shrine of Sazuka Daimyojin (later enshrined at Tsurumine Hachiman Shrine) had been paraded to the beach for a “misogi” ritual long before the visit of thanks to Samukawa Shrine.
The discovery of the mikoshi by Suzuki Magoshichi was not a coincidence, but the result of an investigation. Misogi (purification rituals) had been held on the beach of Samukawa Shrine even before the mikoshi was lost. Samukawa Shrine held misogi (purification rituals) at the mouth of the Sagami River, and Tsurumine Hachiman held misogi (purification rituals) separately on the beach of the southern lake. The locations were then unified at the southern lake, and the rituals were held jointly, with other shrines participating.
