【田舎グルメ】奥多摩ならここ!鳩の巣釜飯と養鶏場の旅 | Hidden Tokyo: Kamameshi, Trout & Japan’s Rarest Eggs!

Freaky! That was seriously creepy! What was that? I didn’t notice that yesterday. I noticed. Really? It all just came back to me now. That was scary! Yeah. But why? Creepy. That wasn’t human, was it? Nah, just a mannequin. Mannequin? A bunch of mannequins standing there in clothes. Like… instead of scarecrows? Wait, was that a farm? I’m not sure. No idea. That was creepy. Hey, so like… the road’s wet today, right? So everything looks prettier than usual. Than usual… Yeah. Okay. The wet roads and reflections give it a dramatic vibe. Dramatic!! Yeah. I see. Makes me think rain’s kinda nice, actually. See? I told you so! I got scolded… See? You can’t hate it without even trying! I got totally chewed out! I’ll probably have to write an apology letter after this… You always do stuff like that. This Kansai guy’s scary, I swear. I’m not scary… Yes, you are. I’m neighing in terror. No. Trembling. Using “neigh” totally killed the joke. I ended up going, like, “neighhh!” Seriously, time to reflect! I’m reflecting! This is the parking lot. “Hatonosu Kamameshi.” Isn’t that the place? Yep, this is it. The curtain’s up—they’re open. Let’s park. Here we are! Kamameshi is the main thing here, but they’ve got another local favorite too. It’s probably yamame—mountain trout. And they serve it as sashimi. I’ve never eaten raw freshwater fish! You don’t see that every day! Trying that is the whole reason I came! Yep! Can’t wait! Let’s go! Sadly… the yamame sashimi was sold out. Apparently it’s in such high demand they can’t supply enough. Okay. By “supply,” they mean the fish haven’t grown big enough in time. I see. I’m guessing they don’t have any that are ready to eat. We came all this way, so let’s go with the kamameshi and grilled yamame. Okay. At least they have the grilled yamame. Oh! I see. They just don’t have sashimi-grade yamame. I think so. I see! Maybe they’re farm-raised yamame? Could be. So they’ve got ones good for grilling, I guess. Well, maybe it’s a seasonal thing. If they have it when you come, you’re lucky. Definitely give it a try. Let’s see. I got the mushroom kamameshi. Rice dish cooked in a pot. Hot! The pot! Dangerous. Well yeah, of course it’s hot. Pretty obvious, honestly. The mushroom kamameshi has flavor all the way through the rice. Okay. I’m sure it’ll be good. Alright, let’s give it a try. I’m going in with chopsticks. Mushroom, and… So toasty! Is it? The flavor’s really strong! Oops, that probably came out wrong. “Strong” might give the wrong idea. The umami…? It’s packed with flavor! Just this is already super satisfying. And next is… They say you squeeze lemon over this before eating. This is mizutaki—a chicken hot pot. A traditional Japanese-style soup. Lemon. Okay. Vegetables and chicken. This is mizutaki. Okay. So comforting! I feel healthier already! Good! Super good! Mine is… What was it? Umm… I’ll do it again. I’m ready. Mine is… the sansai kamameshi set. Mountain vegetable rice. Looks good! This one has the toppings placed on top. That’s a ton of toppings! Yes! This feels really special. So the rice is just plain. Right. Plain white rice. I guess this one’s mixed rice. I see. Guess that’s why there’s a lot of toppings. For mixing. It’s not fully mixed, but I’m gonna try it anyway. The rice is… Is it the rice itself that tastes good? Yes. And,… Yeah, since it’s mixed rice, I think it’d taste even better if it were fully mixed. How’s the topping? Includes ingredients I love, like sansai (wild plants) and gobo (burdock root). And this! Konnyaku, huh! This is sashimi konnyaku! Oh yeah! Konnyaku’s a specialty here! I was waiting for this! Delicious! Okay, how is it? There’s no fishy smell at all. What flavor is it? Here’s your yamame! Finally! We’ve been waiting! Thank you very much. Wow! The yamame is here! And? What flavor is the konnyaku? It’s kinda like… ponzu? Like a light soy sauce with a bit of tang? Wow, it just slides right down… Seriously, there’s no smell at all—and it’s delicious. I didn’t know konnyaku could taste this good! Makes sense why it’s so popular. Try the yamame too! Okay. We’re splitting one this time… So… I’ll try this part here. That’s a beautiful yamame. Look! It’s so fluffy! Yeah! Okay, I’ll give it a taste. The seasoning is perfect! And… Yamame actually tastes really good as a fish! Really? I thought it’d just be a basic, salty white fish. It’s so full of flavor! And… what is it… It’s not a fishy smell. Can I have a bite too? It’s got such a deep, rich flavor. Really delicious. To be honest, I was never really a fan of fish. I didn’t know that. Especially grilled fish… just not a fan. Delicious. See what I meant? Yeah. It’s so… What is this? The flavor from the fish itself? That umami? Yeah, it’s got that umami. It’s not like your usual plain white fish, right? Plus, there’s none of that fishy smell that fish-haters hate. The aroma’s amazing—and it tastes even better. That was really tasty! And it was a really big portion too. I’m absolutely packed. That set was about 1,700 to 1,900 yen per person. Right. To be honest, I thought it was just tourist pricing at first. But when I saw how much food there was, I totally changed my mind. True. That was a ton of food! Couldn’t have asked for more. So it didn’t feel expensive at all. Yeah. It was actually a bargain. For that amount of food. Yeah. It was great. You won’t be disappointed. It was great! Yeah. Thanks for the meal! Look! The egg shop sign! Turn left here… This??? Supposed to be… Can’t make the turn in one go. Man, this hairpin is brutal… Yeah. Plus the camera’s not even in focus! OMG! OMG!! Made the turn! Wait, can a car even get through there? Sure we can. Careful, it’s narrow! Look! This is impossible for a car! The width! Think we can. Are you serious? Wait. The tire is… Okay. This side’s really close! It’s tight right now, yeah? Yeah. But wait. Check ahead too. Over there. Is that road okay for cars? It should be okay… I think. Okay. I trust you. Guess there’s no choice. Let’s try going a bit further. Okay. This side’s good. Looks okay? Yeah! It’s fine. Okay! Still, watch out. Okay? Yeah. We barely made it. That was… That’s a funky bird! Yeah! A pigeon? Is it? Yep, it’s a pigeon. This road is way too tight for a car… What the—!? This is really the road? Really?! Finally, a wide road! Maybe we didn’t have to take that road… You might’ve been right. It says 300 meters ahead. So we didn’t have to go through all that?! What was the point of all that suffering? You feel me? Yeah! We could’ve gotten here just by sticking to the main roads! Google Maps… what were you thinking? But hey, the sign did say “Turn left here.” Toward that road. Okay… Yeah! Let’s park here. That’s the farm stand. That’s it! Okay! Got the eggs! Yes! They had all kinds of eggs. White-yolk eggs, brown shells… lots of kinds! White eggs came in a few types too. What were those called? The brown eggs that said they were super nutritious. …the ones they said tasted amazing. You mean the ones they said had slightly thicker shells? Yeah. Those are the same eggs used at Runway. Yes. And the white eggs too. Yes! That means you can get Runway’s eggs there! Plus, every variety is fresh enough to be eaten raw. So you can have raw egg on rice—tamago-kake gohan. Yep, straight from this very place. True. That place is a poultry farm. But since it’s run by a poultry farm, it doesn’t have a flashy storefront. True. There’s just a sign. And yeah—you’ll need a car to get there. Go check it out if you can! That was fun! Yeah. Their eggs were locally produced, made with a lot of care. Of course, since they’re high quality, they’re pricier than supermarket eggs. They’re way more expensive. The silkie eggs were about 120 yen each. The silkie eggs cost that much?! 120 yen each. I think the ones with white yolks were about 60 yen each. Yeah. I guess that’s about right. Right now in Japan, a pack of 10 eggs is around 300 yen.. So compared to that, these are pretty high-end. But, it really raises our expectations! It gets you curious and makes you want to try them. The shop’s run by the poultry farm. So the eggs are laid right behind the store. No doubt they’re super fresh! You know… Tamago-kake gohan feels kinda special. I wanna try tamago-kake gohan. But, you know what? Tamago-kake gohan with white-yolk eggs… Yeah, that sounds interesting. The yolk’s white! It’s a must try! But there’s one thing I’m worried about. What? You need soy sauce for it. True. The soy sauce might ruin how pretty the white egg looks. It might turn gray. White plus… black. So it might end up looking kinda ugly. Now I really wanna try it! So if you crack the egg over the rice first, and mix it up. And then,… add the soy sauce at the end. That’s a good idea. That way it’ll probably look nicer. True. I wanna use better soy sauce. Or maybe try it with fancy salt. Salted tamago-kake gohan’s really good too. That’s another fun way to enjoy it. Can’t wait!
