Hello, everyone! I’m Naru. This is a hidden hot spring with a 1,200-year history. I’ve come to Hijiori Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture. Yamagata Prefecture is located on the Sea of Japan side of the Tōhoku region, and the prefecture is divided into the “Murayama,” “Shōnai,” “Okitama,” and “Mogami” areas. There are four areas in total! There’s the Murayama area, known for Zaō’s “snow monsters,” Ginzan Onsen with its Taishō Roman-era atmosphere, and the thousand-year-old Yamadera temple. A sacred site for mountain worship, the Shōnai area is home to the Dewa Sanzan (Three Mountains of Dewa). There’s Yonezawa, a castle town associated with the Uesugi clan, and the Okitama area, which is actually a hidden hot spring kingdom. And then there’s the Mogami area, which is where I’ll be visiting. This area is surrounded by rugged mountains like Mt. Chōkai and Mt. Gassan, and it’s a mystical place where deep primeval forests still remain. And one of Japan’s three fastest-flowing rivers, the Mogami River, flows leisurely here. It’s said that the famous poet Matsuo Bashō also enjoyed a boat trip down the river. It’s a region rich in history! Hijiori Onsen is about 2 km in diameter and is located on the eastern edge of a caldera. It’s a hot spring village born from the blessings of the earth. Ryokan (traditional inns) line the Dōzan-gawa River, and it retains the atmosphere of a traditional tōji (hot spring cure) resort, which it still strongly preserves today. At the famous morning market, which starts early, local mothers sell seasonal mountain vegetables and produce, and the lively calls of vendors echo through the air. About access! From Tokyo to Shinjō Station, it’s about 3 hours and 30 minutes. From Shinjō Station, take the village bus “Hijiori Yukemuri Line” for about 55 minutes. From Yamagata Station to Shinjō Station, it runs parallel to the Yamagata Shinkansen. It’s also possible to take the Ōu Main Line! It takes about 1 hour. From Sendai, take the Senzan Line or a highway bus to Shinjō Station, which takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. Good morning! I’ve come to the Mogami region of Yamagata Prefecture! What you see behind me is the Mogami River. The last time I came to Yamagata Prefecture, this is where I took a boat trip down the Mogami River! I wonder if anyone remembers? (laughs) A summer hot spring trip!! Last time was a winter hot spring trip, but this time it’s the summer version. I’m excited to see what it’s like! Well then, let’s go. That’s the giant cedar tree! Depending on the angle, they say it looks like Totoro. It doesn’t look like it at all, right? From here, you know. It doesn’t look like it at all, does it? Wow, it’s so big! When you see it up close, it really looks like Totoro. It has two ears, you know. From where we saw it before, it didn’t look like Totoro, did it? But when you come over here, it really looks like Totoro, doesn’t it? It’s a single tree that’s, like, at the base, it’s split, you know? It’s so thick, you can feel its age. Compared to me, it’s absolutely huge!! There are terraced rice fields spreading out! What do you think? The green of the fields is incredibly beautiful. The sound of the flowing river is so nice. It makes you feel cool, somehow. It’s amazing they made fields here, right? On this slope. That over there is just a mountain. It’s a cliff. I wonder if they cleared this area? Wow! It feels so good when the wind blows! I want to see the terraced fields from below too! Shall we? Let’s go check it out! I wonder if this clear water is what makes the rice so delicious. I can see Hijiori Onsen!! Crossing the “Hijiori Kibō Bridge” to Hijiori Onsen. It’s one of Japan’s largest steel rigid-frame structure viaducts! Total length: approx. 240m, width: 6-8.25m, total construction cost: approx. 1.9 billion yen!! We’ve arrived at Hijiori Onsen! It was close to the terraced rice fields, wasn’t it? Opened in 807 AD, this historic hot spring town celebrated its 1200th anniversary in 2007! The retro atmosphere, you know, shall we enjoy it? Yes. Shall we go? Hijiori Onsen is so retro. This is so great!! It really has the atmosphere of a tōji resort. That traditional feeling, is really nice♪ There are so many inns!! I absolutely love this kind of atmosphere. Masa seems to like the retro atmosphere. About Hijiori Onsen, do you know the origin of its name? Someone broke their elbow (hiji)… That’s right! There’s a theory that an old monk who broke his elbow (hiji) soaked in the hot water of this land (Ue-no-yu) and his injury was instantly healed! What a great atmosphere!! I’ve discovered something!! There was a spot for drinking the hot spring water!! Time to drink! It doesn’t really have a strong onsen feel… Whoa! It has a faint saltiness and it’s delicious!! It’s different from the one I drank at Shima Onsen! That one was like ume-kombu-cha (plum and kelp tea), but this one is a bit more… Milder? A gentler taste!! It’s still a bit thick, isn’t it! It’s delicious!! Such a traditional atmosphere!! This looks so delicious! The atmosphere of the shop is great too. The ramen is also really good!! Delicious!! It’s soy sauce, like a soy sauce-based broth! Delicious!! Delicious!! The motsu (offal) is also tender!! The slightly fatty feeling is nice!! It’s a local ramen popular mainly in Shinjō City, Yamagata Prefecture! It goes down so smoothly. Yamagata ramen never disappoints, does it? Yamagata really has delicious ramen!! It’s truly delicious. The meat and everything else go so well together. It’s a nice balance! It’s really good! As expected! Yamagata ramen is so tasty. The motsu is so tender and delicious! Here is Masa’s food report. 🙌 It’s good! It’s super delicious, right!! Yamagata is amazing… There’s some fat floating, but it’s not greasy at all, is it! That soup is so delicious, right! The hiyashi chūka (chilled ramen) is also incredibly delicious!! Isn’t that wood ear mushroom huge? Yeah! Delicious!! Back to exploring♪ It has the post office mark!! Ue-no-yu Public Bath No. 5 Hot Spring Source Hijiori Dam It’s a little cooler by the dam!! We’re back in the onsen town! It’s hot, so let’s get something to drink!! There was also a shop where you could do a sake tasting! Founded in the first year of the Meiji era, “Maruya Ryokan” boasts a history of 1,200 years since its opening. It’s located in the center of Hijiori Onsen. It’s a retro-modern inn with only 7 rooms, an exquisite hideaway. The onsen is in a beautiful space finished with hinoki (cypress) and Aomori hiba (a type of cypress). You can also enjoy a free-flowing open-air bath! The room is so spacious! There are two rooms! You’re right! The futons are laid out, and there’s a relaxation space!! There are sofas in two places, right? You’re right! There’s also a window with a view of the onsen♪ I’m surprised at how big the room is! It’s so beautiful! This is nice! And this bath ticket? We get discount tickets too. You can get into the Ue-no-yu Public Bath for 100 yen!! Ue-no-yu Public Bath
Normally: Adults ¥400
Children ¥300 Well, if we can get in for 100 yen, I’d like to go before we leave! We have four of them! In the ryokan, the baths… There’s a private bath, and there are two large public baths, right? Shall we hurry and go for a dip? The large public baths switch between men and women after dinner. Okay, so, it’s bath time!! I’ve come to the private bath! Surprisingly, it’s quite spacious here. I thought it might be small since it’s a private bath, but it’s spacious!! The bath can fit, how many people? It’s large enough for about 6 people. This bath here, is the perfect temperature!! It feels great. It has a sulfur smell. Does it also have an iron-like scent? It’s a bath that really feels like an onsen! (laughs) This feels so good. Inside, there’s a step that’s like a seat, so you can sit on it while you soak, and it feels great. I was wondering if a summer onsen would be too hot, but I was wrong. This is nice. It feels great!! Pure bliss, pure bliss!! We’ll have dinner in a private room. There are so many mountain vegetables. This is a menu for enjoying mountain vegetables. There’s meat too, but it’s to complement the mountain vegetables, that’s what they said the menu is for! That’s wonderful! It certainly seems healthy. After a bath, you know, and eating something gentle like this, and eating gentle food like this, it feels like a detox, right♪ This is pure bliss! This is pure bliss! This room is a private room, and the menu and everything is so easy to understand, it’s great! And the fact that you grill it yourself, you don’t have to worry about anything, so it’s relaxing, right? It feels like we’re being trusted with our autonomy, which is nice. Well then, shall we have a bite? The mountain vegetables. What should I have? I think I’ll have the stir-fried fuki (butterbur) with oil. This is my first time having stir-fried fuki with oil! Mmm! Delicious! It’s a little bitter. It feels less bitter than fuki-miso (butterbur miso)! The texture is delicious. It’s so crisp!! Mmm, delicious. That one above it, I want you to try the “Kanoka (mushroom) with garlic and miso stir-fry.” I wonder if it’s something they harvest around here. Kanoka is the name of a mushroom!! Doesn’t it look like maitake mushroom? Delicious! It goes well with garlic! It goes well with garlic and miso. Because it’s meaty, it’s not limp at all. This is pure bliss. I want to make “pure bliss” a popular phrase!! (laughs) I didn’t know mountain vegetables could be this delicious! I really don’t usually eat them, so I didn’t appreciate how good they were, but they taste delicious! Yeah! It’s delicious!! It’s great that they all have different flavors! Do mountain vegetables all taste the same? They might look like it, but I realized that they’re really different! River fish, ayu (sweetfish), with back fat. Mmm! Delicious!! Crispy and fluffy! Crispy and fluffy! Delicious!! The flesh is fluffy, and this skin is crispy. What about the back fat? The back is a little fatty!! The fluffiness is different!! It’s a little more moist! The river fish is also delicious. Wow!! I can really feel the fat! I’ll try a bite! You should try it too, Masa! Masa’s food review. Everyone was cheering for you!! Do it! Oh! Right? Amazing! That’s so much fat. You can really feel the fat on the back, right? Isn’t that amazing? I haven’t had anything like it!! This much fat… I’ve never tasted that in a river fish before. River fish usually have a plain taste, but… It’s delicious, right!! Incredible! What’s so incredible? Beef steak Seasonal tempura Akamizu (mountain vegetable) hot pot It’s natto soup! Amazing! I’ve never heard of it. They say it’s a specialty in Yamagata. A traditional winter home-style dish in Yamagata Prefecture. It’s characterized by grinding natto in a mortar until the beans are no longer visible, making it thick and blending it into the soup. Let’s eat. Ah! It’s natto. I can taste the natto! Delicious! It’s not weird at all. Natto has a strange smell, or rather, it’s unique, isn’t it? So with this miso, you might think it would clash, but it’s a perfect match!! Delicious! Mmm! It’s so delicious! Dessert is watermelon and sweetly stewed adzuki beans! There was a Hijiori Night Market going on♪ I bought some delicious-looking honey!! It’s more lively at night, isn’t it! The lights are so beautiful, aren’t they! The lanterns have been lit! It seems the lanterns are only here during the “Hijiori no Akari” (Hijiori’s Light) event!! The dam also has a different atmosphere from the daytime!! Good morning. It’s the morning of the second day. Now we’re heading to the famous morning market. Is this our first morning market? No, it’s not! We went to the morning market in Hachinohe! 🙇♀️🙇♀️ It seems like they sell all sorts of things, so I want to take a look. For tonight, or… (Mother) It’s fine. (Mother) It will be fine tomorrow too. (Mother) It’s fine. (Mother) This one will last 4-5 days. This one is good until today. (Mother) Eat it today. (Mother) Put it in a cool place and try it for lunch. (Mother) It’s delicious, a mountain mushroom. I bought “Mushroom Okowa” (steamed glutinous rice with mushrooms) and “Sasamaki” (rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves)! I also got some “aomizu” (a type of mountain vegetable) which we ate for dinner yesterday and it was delicious! And tomatoes, a specialty product of Ōkura Village! And freshly picked “kikurage” (wood ear mushrooms)! We bought a lot, didn’t we! We bought so much! That atmosphere makes you want to buy things!! Everything was picked yesterday or, you know, it’s so fresh!! That’s why I bought so much~! I’m looking forward to eating it♪ I’m going to eat a little of what I bought at the morning market!! The mushroom okowa looks so delicious, doesn’t it? There’s a lot in here. It feels heavy. They said it was mushrooms, right? Wow! It’s mushrooms. I’m going to eat it now. The rice is shining a beautiful brown color! Delicious!! The aroma of the dashi and the mushrooms just spreads in your mouth! Delicious!! This mushroom is so full of flavor!! I wonder what it is. This is so tasty! A long time ago, the inns didn’t serve food, so people would buy ingredients at the morning market and cook for themselves. That’s what a tōji (hot spring cure) resort is! I wonder if you can still do that now? In places that have a kitchen area, it seems possible. If you just stay overnight without meals… For people who stay for many days, you know, they said they do it every day. Yeah. They said they do it even on rainy days. I was so surprised!! And in winter, it must be cold. Maybe they don’t do it in winter. Held daily from April 20th to late November, starting at 5:00 AM. It’s nice that the old-fashioned feeling remains. We’ll have breakfast in the same room as yesterday. Soy milk tofu. A cute mug. Thank you for your hospitality. 🙏 We’ve come to Yakushi Jinja Shrine. On top of this mountain, there is a small shrine called Jizō-gura. If you go from here, it takes about an hour and a half, and there might be bears, which would be difficult, so this time we’ll use a car and take a shortcut. The legendary site of Hijiori Onsen’s founding, a cave where an old monk is said to have lived. We’ll walk on a concrete path for a little while! The steep climb continues for quite a while. We’re in a forested area with no wind at all, so it’s incredibly hot. There are a lot of mosquitoes. They’re drawn to me because I’m sweating. But it’s beautiful. Yeah, the greenery is incredibly beautiful. The maple trees and such, I’ll let things like that soothe me as we make our way up little by little. Wow! It’s opened up! Over there, the dam… There it is! You can really see the caldera-like terrain! I can! I can! The hot spring resort is in a sunken terrain! We might be able to see Mt. Gassan. If we go up higher! The mountain in front is blocking it, but beyond that is Mt. Gassan, right? Oh, I’m so excited! Let’s hurry up and go! It’s in a place that makes you think, “It’s here!?” (laughs) We’ve arrived at Jizō-gura. At the summit, there’s a Jizō statue and this… hall!! The view is amazing too, isn’t it? We can see a little bit of Mt. Gassan. It looks like we’ll be able to see it soon! We can also see the river and stuff! And you know, this is the main thing, right? This rock!! It is said that if you can pass a koyori (paper string) through a small hole in the rock face, your wish will come true! I, unfortunately, something like that… I forgot to bring one, so I’ll use this 5-yen coin, and offer it. Be careful of bees and horseflies!! I’m going to Ue-no-yu to freshen up!! How was Hijiori Onsen? It was amazing!! It was really good, wasn’t it? The retro atmosphere. This kind of onsen town, we haven’t been to one recently. We haven’t been going, so the atmosphere was really great. I can’t believe places like this still exist. Exactly, exactly. I thought I’d like to stay for a few nights and just relax. The inn was great too, and the onsen was the best!! The water quality!! Even though it’s a three-day weekend, it wasn’t super crowded. That was really great too! It’s a hidden gem! Jizō-gura was great too! It’s pure bliss. It was pure bliss. It was pure, pure bliss, wasn’t it? Thank you for watching!

I really like your videos, keep up the good work !
