Hamaorisai is a traditional festival where people from Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture and other mikoshi (portable shrines) gather together to perform purification rituals in the sea. It begins before dawn and is also called the “Festival of Dawn.” It is said that around 1838, the deity of Samukawa Shrine fell into the Sagami River, where it was discovered by a local fisherman who returned it to the shrine as a token of his gratitude. It is characterized by the “Hamaori” ritual, in which people carry the mikoshi (portable shrine) into the sea. It is held every year on Marine Day in July at Chigasaki Nishihama Beach. At dawn, about 40 mikoshi (portable shrines) gather from each shrine and are paraded through the sea while singing festival songs, creating a spectacular sight.
