A historic hot spring area mentioned in the Manyoshu A hot spring inn that travels through time, combining the sensibilities of the past and present Sen Yugawara Today we are in Yugawara , Kanagawa Prefecture. Yugawara Onsen is located in the western part of Kanagawa Prefecture and is one of the most famous hot springs in the Kanto region, along with Atami Onsen. It has a long history and is a historic hot spring area that was mentioned in the Manyoshu . It has a total flow rate of approximately 18 million liters and more than 400 hot springs. The abundant water volume and soft spring quality have made it a hot spring area that has long been loved by writers and artists. The inn we are staying at today is Sen Yugawara, a hot spring inn that opened on July 12, 2023 and has open-air baths in all rooms. It is a “private all-inclusive” experience that includes all meals, drinks, and spa use during your stay. A hidden inn that adopts a traditional style. The journey to this inn, tucked away at the end of a narrow alley, feels like an adventure. There are four parking lots scattered around the inn. It is easily accessible, about an hour by Tokaido Shinkansen from the city center, and about an hour and a half from Nagoya. There is no shuttle from Yugawara Station, so you can access it by local bus or taxi. The journey takes about 15 minutes by bus and 10 minutes by taxi. After climbing a slightly steep slope and giving your legs a little workout, you have arrived at today’s inn . Yugawara – If you’re not paying attention, you might just walk right past this quiet and dignified building. This is a long-established inn that was founded in 1885, and it has been completely renovated with a modern sensibility. This is the lobby, which was designed with water in mind . Relaxing background music is playing, so you’ll feel relaxed the moment you arrive. Check-in is at this table, and you can choose a welcome drink from this menu. It’s nice to see such thoughtfulness. First, we head to our room. Since the renovation took advantage of the structure of the long-established inn that was founded in 1885, there is no elevator in the building, but you can still get a good feel for the atmosphere and style of the building. The staff will carry your large luggage to your room in advance. Today we are staying in a “room with a view.” The bed is placed in the middle of the living room. There is an extra bed at the back of the twin bed. This is where the in-house clothes are kept. There is a sink, a refrigerator, A space with a safe and other items. All skincare products are from the Yayoi cosmetics brand. You can use this tablet to inquire at the front desk or make reservations for the sauna. The sauna can be used for 30 minutes per group. Amenities include tabi socks, hairbrush, toothbrush, shower cap, hair tie, and cotton. Children’s amenities include toothbrush, body sponge, and slippers. There was also a Kalita coffee mill, electric kettle, and coffee set . And there was a special service in the refrigerator… All drinks in the refrigerator can be used for free. Tea, beer, and mineral water. Ashigara tea made with tea leaves from Kanagawa Prefecture. Mineral water with natural silica. Asahi’s Maruef. This black box is a treat for later. The large windows offer a view of Yugawara. When you step out onto the outdoor terrace, you’ll see an oval open-air bath. The private hot spring water that springs from 250 meters underground is 100% water that is not filtered or circulated. It is a natural hot spring, so you can enjoy bathing with the same view as the unobstructed mountains. The shower room is indoors. The indoor wear is like relaxing wear, with a waffle fabric top and smooth wide pants on the bottom, so it looks like a comfortable combination. The indoor wear for children was a samue. It was a wonderful room where you could lie on the bed and enjoy the view. There were many other attractive rooms, and we were shown some of them, so let’s go and check them out. Next is the courtyard room . The “courtyard room” was built as a “detached house” at the time. The bedroom and living room are separate, and it is spacious. The space is spacious and you can see beautiful greenery from the window. Bathing while watching the trees in the garden that have grown over the years is a soothing time that makes you want to take a deep breath and forget the hustle and bustle of the city. The hot spring facing the garden was an attractive feature of this room. The last one is the high ground room. Of the five main buildings, the “high ground room” is at the top of the hill. It is a two-room Japanese-style room with a tatami bed area and a living room. It has a semi-open-air bath . The bathtub is more spacious than the previous rooms and seems to be able to fit about 2-3 people. Every room has a unique feel to it . That concludes the room tour . Next, let’s take a look inside the building. Yugawara- does not have a large public bath, but instead has a private sauna where you can relax without worrying about other people. There are two private loyly saunas, “EAST” and “WEST”. Reservations are required for the sauna, and can be made from the tablet in the guest room. Since it is all-inclusive, there is of course no charge. The “EAST” sauna is said to be a space that evokes the morning light. Amenities are also provided, including a hair dryer and a water server. Both bathtubs are cold baths . The sauna is very compact and can fit about two adults. Showers and chairs for outdoor bathing are also available, so you can enjoy a relaxing time. Next is “WEST”. The sauna in “WEST” is a space that evokes the evening light. There are two cold baths and a shower here . The sauna is compact, just like the one before, and has a different atmosphere from EAST, which is nice. Basically, two saunas are used, but a third sauna is only opened during busy periods. This was great because you can feel the nature outside the window. Next, I’ll go to the Mist Lounge. Cool down your body that has heated up in the sauna in the Mist Lounge. This Mist Lounge is open 24 hours a day . It’s amazing that you can enjoy alcohol, soft drinks, snacks, and iced sweets whenever you want. Draft beer , Junmai Ginjo and sparkling wine , red and white wine , soft drinks such as cola, orange juice, and iced tea , coffee, tea, soup , rooibos tea , and more. There were canned highballs in the refrigerator. And snacks called “sa-meshi” are snacks to have after the sauna. There was curry and pilaf . There are two types of chairs, vanilla and strawberry. The snacks were dried fruit and calpas. First, we had beer. I also brought the black box that was in the refrigerator in the room earlier. This is the first dish to enjoy in the room, “Aperitif”. We were served snacks specially made by the chef. It looks gorgeous and delicious. It seems to be packed with small course dishes. Chicken liver pate, baguette , chicken terrine , mandarin orange marinade, Ashigara beef stewed in tomato sauce . Stylish snacks. It was hot outside that day, so the beer went down even better with the delicious snacks. It was quite filling, so it was great to satisfy my hunger. Before I knew it, my glass was empty, so I had a highball. Calpas has a bit of a junky feel to it, which also makes you want to drink alcohol. I even ate ice cream and thoroughly enjoyed the lounge. By the way, smoking is prohibited inside the building. You can take a portable ashtray at the front desk and go outside to smoke. YURARITABI It’s time for dinner. The dinner venue is Restaurant Repast. You can choose to start from 5:30 pm or 6:00 pm. Curtains are installed at each table, and we sit here in a calm space like a private room. Since it is an all-inclusive style, drinks are all-you-can-drink. There are about 30 types of alcohol . Draft beer from Maruef and barrel-aged sour lemon, blackcurrant, and green apple syrup Strained peach, yuzu, and plum wine Liqueur and whiskey Japanese whiskey Shochu Gin and rice shochu Special junmai sake and junmai ginjo sake White wine Additive-free white wine Sparkling wine Red wine There are also drinks here Non-alcoholic beer Soft drinks First, we will have a beer Toast The food has just arrived It is tofu It is fluffy and mousse-like First, I will try to eat it as it is It feels like the tofu melts when you put it in your mouth It tastes like tofu It is a firm tofu Umeka When you pour the tuna jelly over it, it’s refreshing and delicious, and the strange texture is fun. It is served with seared Ashigara beef sirloin potato salad . When you pour ponzu sauce over grated daikon radish, it changes color, changing from purple to reddish. When you eat Ashigara beef sirloin with grated daikon radish and ponzu sauce, it has a light aftertaste that doesn’t feel greasy, and you’ll want rice… This is an original salt made with 10 kinds of medicinal herbs. The moist, glossy duck has a smoky aroma that wafts through your nose. This is a piece of firm sea bream that goes well with the refreshing flavor of soy vinegar . So is a dairy product that was eaten from the Asuka period to the Nara period and is said to be the oldest cheese in Japan. It is made by simply boiling down milk, removing the water, and solidifying it. It is simply made from 100% milk without adding salt or fermentation. It is said that it is made only with sashimi. Next is sashimi, so we will have some sake. The sashimi is decorated with Kamakura vegetables, inspired by the twelve-layered ceremonial kimono of the Heian period. The sashimi, which includes tuna, snow crab, yellowtail, and surf clam, is very fresh and delicious. The tuna is especially delicious. When you add the yuzu pepper dressing, the taste changes completely and it is also delicious. The Jomon Acorn Miso Nabe contains clams, shrimp with heads, pork, meatballs, and vegetables such as white onions and chrysanthemum. When you eat it with the fragrant aroma of miso, you will be surprised by the garlic. Colorful sushi with eel and salmon. A bowl of soba with tea and daisies with yuzu citrus. The plump , sweet and spicy eel goes well with the vinegared rice. The salmon roe is also crunchy, and the three different flavors are in harmony in one bowl. The cold soba noodles are smooth and easy to swallow, making you feel the summer. Next is dessert, so we will have some sparkling wine. The dessert is Kaguyahime, which is presented with dry ice . The jewel that I fell in love with, the full moon mousse, topped with Shonan gold jelly and silver leaf, gave it a luxurious feel. From the appetizer to the dessert, the creative cuisine that mixed the past and the present was a very satisfying course that fused the depth of Japanese culture with the lightness of today.Thank you for the meal. After dinner, I relaxed in my room and then came to the Mist Lounge.I was hungry so I decided to have the usual “Sa-meal” .I heated it in the microwave for 3 minutes. To accompany the “Sa-meal” , I heated up two pure rice wine curries and one pilaf. This “Sa-meal” is apparently homemade. The curry was slightly spicy and had a familiar taste. The pilaf was also a classic. Both were just the right amount and perfect for satisfying my hunger. Before going to bed, I relaxed in the bath in the guest room.Good night.Good morning. The weather is nice today too.I was soothed by the hot spring in the guest room in the morning.Breakfast is a bit leisurely from 8am, so I had coffee in my room. What criteria do you use when deciding where to travel? Price, food, hot spring quality, accessibility… All of these are important, but I’m curious to know which is the deciding factor. When I’m tired from work, I choose a hot spring resort where I can relax with as little travel as possible. When I want to eat a lot of delicious food, I look for ryokans that are particular about their cuisine . Please tell me your “deciding factors for traveling” if you don’t mind. By the way, food and accessibility are important to us, but… in the summer, it’s all about whether it’s “close to the sea”. My whole family loves the sea, so we spend hours going to the sea every week. Playing at the sea and then going to the inn is a summer staple of hot spring trips . I wish I could just live near the sea. From now on, my skin may get darker every time I release a video. It’s time for breakfast. Breakfast starts at 8 or 9 o’clock, and it seems that you can change it to brunch at 10:30. In the morning, there is all-you-can-drink alcohol. The alcohol menu is as rich as it is at dinner. Sen’s breakfast is carefully prepared one by one. The Japanese food was carefully prepared, and just looking at it was so relaxing and comforting. It even came with dried horse mackerel. The older sister had hamburger steak instead of dried fish. The rice was served in a rice container. You can have more. The small hot pot was kenchinjiru, a local dish of Kanagawa Prefecture. It was full of ingredients and was filling, and it seemed to warm the body. I decided to have sparkling wine for the morning. It’s rare to have such a wide variety of alcoholic drinks in the morning. Dad had non-alcoholic beer. The kenchinjiru was rich in vegetables and fishcakes, and was a comforting taste. The Kamakura vegetable and whitebait salad was topped with ponzu sauce, and the nanbanzuke contained small white fish. The sesame Chinese bamboo was seasoned with sesame oil, making it just the right palate cleanser. The beef tsukudani had a sweet flavor that made the rice go down well. There were lots of side dishes for the rice, so you could eat a lot in the morning. The dried fish was plump and very delicious. Thank you for the meal. It was time to check out. Check-out is at 10:30. Finally, I’ll tell you about the price and my impressions of the stay . The cheapest rate for Yugawara- is 22,000 yen per adult for one night with two meals on the official website. Plans with breakfast are available from 9,900 yen. Single guests are also welcome. At Sen Yugawara-, it was great to be able to enjoy the free-flowing hot springs in a completely private space where no one will disturb you. Although there are some inconveniences, such as the lack of an elevator, the hotel has a Japanese-modern feel that retains the appearance of a long-established inn founded in 1885 while adding modern sophistication, creating a space where history and the present are in harmony. As it is all-inclusive, it is also a nice point that you can enjoy drinks in the lounge and restaurant without worrying about additional fees. It is rare to find an inn where you can use the lounge 24 hours a day, so it is a great place. Details of Sen Yugawara- are listed in the description section. Please check it out. Thank you for watching until the end. Thank you for watching until the end.
