Hello, this is Mini. I’m going to explore Uji in early summer. First, I went to a temple famous for hydrangeas. I came just as the gates were opening, but it was already crowded with people. The hydrangea flower water basin is very beautiful! The fresh hydrangeas are refreshing. This statue is a snake god of fortune with a happy face, like a “komahebi” instead of a “komainu”. Everyone strokes his ears, whiskers, and tail to receive the blessings of fortune. Before heading to the hydrangea garden, I first said hello to the main hall. There was a very large lotus pond in front of the main hall. I looked it up and found that there are 250 pots and about 100 kinds of lotus planted there. If they all bloom, it might really be like a paradise…? I was worried that the hydrangeas would bloom with the cold spring and the early summer sunshine, but they were in full bloom on this day! I was able to see colorful hydrangeas. Some were a little burnt by the sun, but many of the flowers were blooming well. There were many varieties of hydrangeas, from familiar ones to ones I’ve never seen before. This hydrangea has cute petals like stars. This hydrangea looks like a sparkler. There are various colors and shapes, so you never get bored of looking at any of them. There are about 20,000 hydrangeas planted, so you can see hydrangeas wherever you look, which is really beautiful. This is my personal favorite hydrangea. The petals look like they were painted with colored pencils, and I was mesmerized by them. There are apparently 50 varieties, but as expected, it’s hard to tell 50 varieties apart… but all the hydrangeas were very beautiful and I was completely healed. This is a temple I would like to visit in another season. I took the train one stop. I headed to a temple called “Manpukuji Temple”, which was recently designated a national treasure. It was less than a 5-minute walk from the station, so I arrived quickly. Built in the Chinese Ming Dynasty style, this temple has a unique architectural style. As advertised as an “uninhabited national treasure”, you can have the scenery all to yourself without people. Previously, Kyoto’s tourist spots were also this crowded in the off-season. The whole view is incredibly spacious. The hanging objects in the foreground and background are said to be ritual implements to announce the time. The fish-shaped “Kaipan” is cute with its unique expression. (Actually, it seems to be the original form of a mokugyo…?) When you ring your fingers inside this bell, it echoes and you can hear a very beautiful sound. (Very similar to the sound at the beginning of the Nintendo Switch commercial) This swastika pattern is also rare in temples. It was a mysterious temple with a strange mix of exoticism and Japanese style. Well, actually, my destination in Obaku is the following place. I wanted to eat the “tera soba” (ramen) served at Hozoin, a subtemple of Manpukuji Temple. You may wonder why ramen at a temple, but there are about 60,000 “Tetsuganban Issaikyo Woodblocks,” important cultural properties on which sutras are written, and part of the price is donated to cover the costs of protecting and maintaining them. I don’t know if it’s okay to say this about a temple, but it has a very homey atmosphere. Since it is served at a temple, it is made only from plant-based ingredients. The taste changes with the seasons, so I want to complete all the seasons…! The temple soba was light soy sauce flavored this time. This clear soup is light but flavorful and very delicious…! The ingredients, which are inspired by the “five colors” of Buddhism, give it an exquisite taste change, and I can’t stop eating it. On this day, there was also a rice dish with glutinous rice (cooked rice). [cite_start]This is also simply seasoned, and goes well with the light ramen. [cite: 2] After the meal, I was able to see inside. The “Tetsuganban Issaikyo Woodblock” is said to be the origin of manuscript paper and Ming Dynasty font. I like fonts, so I was impressed by the beauty of seeing the actual woodblock. Thank you for the meal. It was so delicious that I couldn’t believe it was only plant-based. I moved to Uji Station. A bakery near the station. It is a healthy bakery that focuses on natural yeast and organic products. There are a lot of breads, mainly hard ones! It smells good of wheat. There are many flavors of donuts, so it’s hard to decide which one to choose. You can eat in the shop, which was renovated from an old house. It has a very nice atmosphere. This lighting is made from a remade musical instrument, and it’s so cute…! I’m looking forward to eating the hand-kneaded bread! I found this shop by chance while walking from the bakery towards Ujibashi Street. There are so many drinks made with chocolate! They all look delicious. I had a chocolate drink and a peach frappe. The chocolate drink was like drinking chocolate whipped cream. The peach frappe also went perfectly with the white chocolate. The chocolate had a real taste and was so delicious that I couldn’t stop. I walked towards the Uji River, so I took a short break. I bought a sandwich there. It was full of vegetables. Fresh crunchy vegetables and bread with a strong wheat aroma… delicious. With my stomach full, I headed to the first experience of the day. Asahiyaki is a pottery manufacturer in Uji that uses Uji clay and has a history of about 400 years. I was looking for pottery recently and happened to come across this shop. There are many dishes with gentle colors. All of them have a relaxing texture. Today I will be experiencing pottery at this pottery manufacturer. I’m looking forward to it. I hope I can make a dish with a soft color like this. The pottery experience is just a short walk from the store along the Uji River. (I made a mistake with the camera settings, so the next three shots are blurry…🙏) This pottery manufacturer uses both gas kilns and climbing kilns for firing. The climbing kiln is really big when you see it in person…! It was overwhelming. In the pottery class, the instructor first shows you a model. The explanation is very easy to understand, so you think “I can do it!” But when you actually try it, the clay is harder than you imagined, and it’s quite difficult to stretch it. It’s starting to take shape. By the way, I’m making a tea bowl. It’s starting to look like a tea bowl. Finally, I cut it apart and it’s finished. The pedestal will be added later, so no need to worry. There is 3kg of clay, so you can make as many as you like within the time limit. 4 pieces I made. The mysterious pot in the back is a failure… (It was meant to be a vase) 4 pieces made by my husband. It’s his first time, but he’s so good. It will be a few months before they are fired. I can’t wait. The pottery experience was fun – I’m looking forward to eating rice on the plate I made. I was concentrating on my work, so I’m starving. I had a late lunch at a hearth-grilled restaurant on Ujibashi Street. I’m happy that it even came with a set of dashi ochazuke. Fish are being grilled one after another in the middle of the kitchen. I’m envious of the “fish grilled on the hearth” that we often see in Japanese folk tales. The fat drips off the charcoal fire, and it looks delicious… [cite_start] “Hiroi-grilled mackerel set meal” The mackerel is big. [cite: 3] The skin was crispy and the inside was plump, so I was very satisfied! The “One-night-dried Atka mackerel meal” is bigger and heavier than the mackerel. We have dashi ochazuke in the second half. You can also have more rice. Thank you for the meal – it was more voluminous than I expected! After a meal, we always have something sweet. I wonder if the idea of having a separate stomach for sweets is a universal thing? This is a shop that offers handmade gelato with a moderate sweetness, using carefully selected ingredients. There are many unusual flavors. You can never have too many types of gelato, after all. I chose lychee, blueberry & yogurt. I wonder why blueberries and yogurt go so well together… I chose lychee because it’s unusual. It was refreshing and very delicious. Here is peach and lemon. It’s like eating the peach fruit itself. The lemon has peel in it and is delicious. I just wonder what I should have next… Thank you for the meal! The last place for today is this tea shop. It is a 500-year-old shop with a history and tradition as the “Shogun’s official tea master”. Today, we will experience making matcha on the third floor of this shop. There was a tea tap at my elementary school, but this was my first time making matcha. First, I had to grind the matcha with a stone mill. The stone mill is very heavy, and I had to turn it pretty fast. The aroma of tea is wafting. It’s nice to be able to drink matcha that you made yourself. First, a sample. I was surprised that they put in quite a lot. The trick to distinguishing good matcha is the color of the powder (dark and vivid). The trick is to move it as if you are writing the number “1” instead of drawing a circle. It seems that moving the tea whisk quickly without touching the bottom will create fine bubbles. I got the hang of it with the easy-to-understand explanation and demonstration! Now it’s time to try it. This is surprisingly difficult…! I’m tense and can’t make it as fast as I want 😂 But I got a passing grade. Doesn’t it look good…? 😉 I’ve made it myself, and this matcha is really delicious. Maybe because it’s freshly ground, it’s refreshing and rich and delicious! The second floor is a reference room for tea. There was a letter of appreciation for Uji tea served at the Philadelphia Exposition in 1876. “The tea leaves traveled across the ocean in a teapot for many days, so the taste and freshness are…” (said the shop staff). To make the most of the experience, I also bought some matcha tea to take home. I wonder if I can make it at home? Reservations are required, but it’s a casual experience, so I recommend it. (Apparently, the shop’s three-star crest is also said to be the origin of the map symbol for tea fields!) Both the Asahiyaki pottery and Uji matcha experiences were fun and gave me a sense of history. Uji in the summer is also recommended, so please go and experience it. See you in the next video. Next time, I’ll probably go to Kyoto. (I’m not sure where…)
