A Beach Town Most People Don’t Know About: Praia Areia Branca

In this video: June 28, 2025 – 4:30 pm Hi everyone! It’s the middle of summer in Portugal, so today we’re going to
visit a small beach town… …that most of you have probably
never heard of: Praia da Areia Branca. I’m not even sure if this
is a town or a village, it’s probably a village. Many of my videos in the past few months… …have been about rustic, quiet
villages, full of stone houses. And that’s the kind of
content most of you prefer. But not every Portuguese
village fits that image. I think it’s important to show
different sides of Portugal, otherwise, my videos would
all start to look the same. Praia da Areia Branca is located
along Portugal’s Silver Coast, in the municipality of Lourinhã, about 70 km (43 miles) north of Lisbon, and 15 km (9 miles) south of Peniche. The village takes its name
(“white sand beach”)… …from its long beach that
opens into the Atlantic Ocean. This is a relatively young village. The first buildings were
erected during the 1920s, a period when beachgoing
became increasingly popular. It started a process of urbanization… …in an area that was,
until then, unpopulated. Praia da Areia Branca
developed more recently… …than the neighboring seaside resorts. Coastal towns like Nazaré and Ericeira… …were already established
seaside destinations by the 1920s. One of Praia da Areia Branca’s
main attractions is surfing. Many of the local surf schools… …are run by members of Portugal’s
first generation of surfers. The swell is fairly consistent
throughout the year, and this beach serves
as a quieter alternative… …to the world-class waves at
Supertubos Beach in Peniche, just a 20-minute drive away. Unlike crowded tourist hubs
like Albufeira in particular, and the entire Algarve region in general, Praia da Areia Branca stays
relatively quiet, even in summer. It attracts mostly local families, surfers, and travelers looking to
escape the noise and crowds. Most of the beachgoers here are Portuguese, and the village itself
still feels deeply local. A classic Volkswagen Beetle! This is Rio Grande, a small river
about 25 km (16 miles) long. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean
at Praia da Areia Branca, splitting the beach roughly in two. Campsite. There are no big hotels, no theme
parks, no overpriced restaurants, just a laid-back beach town with
a genuinely Portuguese vibe. During the summer months, an artificial sandbar is built to prevent
the river from reaching the sea, creating a still body of water. In the winter months, the
sandbar is removed. Summer temperatures here
are a lot lower than in Lisbon, thanks to its direct exposure to
Atlantic currents and coastal winds. This may or may not be a good thing, depending on your preferences. On the day I filmed this, Lisbon was sweltering at 41ºC (106ºF), while here it was a much
cooler 23 to 24ºC (73-75ºF). Mornings in Praia da Areia
Branca often start off cloudy. The water is cold year-round, especially if you’re not
used to Atlantic beaches. For those looking to discover a
quieter side of Portugal’s coastline, without the hustle of the
more touristy beach towns, Praia da Areia Branca is
definitely worth considering. If you’d like to support the channel, visit:

Escape the summer heat and crowds with a visit to Praia da Areia Branca, a quiet beach town on Portugal’s Silver Coast, in the municipality of Lourinhã. Just over an hour from Lisbon, this laid-back spot offers cool Atlantic breezes, and a local vibe that hasn’t been lost to mass tourism. Most visitors here are Portuguese, and it shows in the and authenticity of the place.

  1. Olá Miguel!! I LOVE Praia Areia Branca!! It is one of my favourite places on the Silver Coast and I most definitely would live there. In the 3 months I lived in Atouguia (which of course you know I loved)… I visited Praia Areia Branca many times… as I did Lourinhã. In fact even though Peniche was closer, I shopped in Lourinhã more often and always stopped at the beach. I loved sunsets from here too! It's not a huge town (probably village)… but it was perfect to me. And you can walk there from Seixal very safely.
The first time I went I was driving there to meet up with my future Portuguese teacher and I put Areia Branca in my GPS but it took me to the village just south of the praia, which IS Areia Branca… so you have Areia Branca and Praia Areia Branca, which has confused many people, LOL.
That is very interesting about the removing of the sand bar… because watching this, I was thinking I don't remember it being like this. (and I don't remember that bridge or long boardwalk over to the other side… (which may be newer in the last 8 years). The river flowed freely into the ocean when I was there.

lá perto, e a areia branca é a minha preferida naquela zona.

  9. WOW beautiful place. Bet those homes are expensive! They look stunning! I could definitely live there 🙂
