Hokkaido has more natural lakes than any other region in Japan—over 80 in total—shaped by volcanic activity, calderas, and glacial terrain. This selection highlights some of its most scenic and diverse lakes, seen across different seasons and landscapes.

1. Lake Shikaribetsu – The highest elevation lake in Hokkaido, surrounded by forested mountains
2. Lake Toyoni – A remote heart-shaped lake hidden in the forests of Erimo
3. Lake Mashū (winter) – A deep caldera lake known for its exceptionally clear water.
4. Onuma – Wetlands dotted with small islands, backed by Mt. Komagatake
5. Lake Tōya – A round caldera lake with a central island and hot springs nearby
6. Lake Akan (frozen) – Icy in winter, home to unique marimo algae
7. Lake Mashū (summer)
8. Shiretoko Five Lakes – Small reflective lakes in a protected UNESCO site
9. Lake Shikotsu – Cold, clear, and ice-free year-round despite subzero winters
10. Lake Kuttara – Nearly circular, with some of Japan’s cleanest water
11. Lake Kussharo – Japan’s largest caldera lake, surrounded by fumaroles and forest
12. Lake Nukabira – Known for its partially submerged bridge ruins in winter

北海道は、日本で最も自然湖が多い地域で、総数は80以上。火山、カルデラ、氷河などの地形によって形成された湖が数多く点在しています。今回は、季節や風景が異なる13の湖を紹介します。
登場する湖（順番）：
1. 然別湖 – 北海道で最も標高の高い場所にある山あいの湖
2. 豊似湖 – 藪に囲まれた、ハート型で知られる秘境の湖
3. 摩周湖（冬） – 世界でも屈指の透明度を誇るカルデラ湖

12. 糠平湖 – 冬に水位が下がり、水没した橋脚が姿を見せる湖
