What Happened Inside This Abandoned Okinawa Hotel?

This rare 1988 footage captures the legendary Royal Hotel in Kitanakagusuku, Okinawa—an abandoned hillside resort surrounded by mystery and urban legends.

Originally intended as a luxury hotel in the 1970s or 80s, construction was halted and the building left to decay. It became one of Okinawa’s most iconic abandoned places until its demolition in the 2010s.

🎥 Filmed during the U.S. military era, this is part of my personal archive of vintage Okinawa footage. If you lived on Okinawa or remember this era, you might recognize this forgotten landmark.

I’m sharing select, edited clips from a student-created VHS tape shared in 1988. My goal is to have a time capsule as part of a preservation series — highlighting student life, hangouts, and memorable places from that time. This clip has been digitized, edited, and shared for historical preservation, commentary, and cultural memory under fair use. The original audio has been replaced to respect copyright, and no commercial use is intended. If you are the original creator or participant and wish to connect or discuss its use, please comment or contact me directly.

  2. Was that the place you could see from the castle? It was creepy looking, but I never went in it. We did find a old zoo in the jungle near there.
