Itadori juku, Minami Echizen, Fukui [4K Binaural]
0:00 Origin of Itadori-juku
Until the Sengoku period, there were only two overland routes into Echizen: the ancient road over the Yamanaka Pass (Manyō Road) and the Hokuriku Road (West Ōmi Route) over the Kinome Pass.
In 1578 (Tenshō 6), when Shibata Katsuie was assigned to govern Kitano-shō, he carried out major renovations of the Tochinoki Pass to establish the shortest route to Azuchi Castle, the seat of Oda Nobunaga. From then on, the movement of people and horses became more frequent, and Itadori-juku was established at the southern edge of Echizen as an important checkpoint. It was equipped with 30 post horses and 60 porters on standby.
Itadori-juku developed as the gateway to the Hokkokukaidō (Eastern Ōmi Route), serving as a crucial relay post connecting the provinces of Ōmi and Echizen.
During the Edo period, after Tokugawa Ieyasu’s son Yūki Hideyasu entered the domain, a checkpoint was established to regulate travelers. Later, the site became known as the Itadori Guard Station, where domain officials were stationed.
The station was well-equipped with swords, bows and arrows, matchlock guns, and armor, and three officers along with one foot soldier were assigned to maintain strict security.
By the end of the Edo period, Itadori-juku had become a bustling post town with 53 households. Among them were three official wholesalers (tonya), seven inns (hatago), three teahouses, and several homes engaged in relay services.
