Sessho-seki and Onsen Shrine. Cheese Garden souvenirs. Nasu-Shiobara Onsen. Please also use the chapter list in the description section Sessho -seki Day 2 of sightseeing in Nasu-Shiobara. Sessho-seki and Onsen Shrine are connected by a small path. After seeing Sessho-seki, we will go to the shrine. Park the car at the Sessho-seki parking lot and look around Sessho-seki first. This is a sign map that matches the parking lot. The left half is the Sessho-seki area. We didn’t go to the right side this time, but there is a hot spring source, a hot spring facility called Shika-no-yu, and a foot bath. Yumoto, hot spring source Shika-no-yu, with a history of 1300 years I would like to take a bath in this bath. There are toilets and vending machines in the parking lot . Cross the Ideyu Bridge over the Yukawa River. There is a roofed rest area on the way, but there is nothing to block the sun at the Yubatake, so it is a good idea to bring a hat or parasol in midsummer. If you see Sessho-seki and return without going to the shrine, I don’t think you will walk more than 500m. It’s uphill, but the slope is gentle. There is a fork in the road. You can go either way. This is the Blind Snake Stone near the fork. A long time ago, a man named Gozaemon built a hut for a blind snake out of Japanese pampas grass and twigs so that it could survive the winter . In the spring, shining hot spring mineral deposits were harvested from the hut. At that time, people in this area of Nasu paid hot spring mineral deposits to Edo as annual tax, instead of rice . They named this stone, which resembles a snake’s head, “Blind Snake Stone” and treasured it. If you climb up from the left path, you will see a row of 1,000 Jizo statues. They are filled with the prayers of donors who wish to avoid accidents and natural disasters while traveling. The number of Jizo statues is increasing year by year through donations. Soon the other side may be filled with Jizo statues as well. The Jizo statues are praying, facing Rengeji Temple. And the one on the hill is Kyoden Jizo. He was originally the head priest of Rengeji Temple, but he lost his temper over something trivial and kicked his mother, which resulted in his punishment. In 1336, he fell into the boiling water that erupted near the Sessho-ishi . The first Jizo statue was erected in 1720 in hopes of a world free of filial impiety. The current statue is the second one, erected in 1975. The building we glimpsed earlier is a rest area. From this road, you can walk to the observation deck. However, it is a 1km mountain path. The Sessho-ishi can be seen. It is said that the Sessho-ishi was formed during the reign of Emperor Toba when a nine-tailed fox was cornered by an onmyoji and turned to stone. Even after turning to stone, it continued to take people’s lives, so in 1385, it was smashed by the monk Gen’o, and the pieces were scattered all over the country. On March 5, 2022, the stone was broken into two, and it was feared that something bad would happen. Matsuo Basho also visited the Sessho Stone and composed a haiku poem about it: “The scent of the stone, the summer grass red with dew.” It seems that poisonous gas has been coming out from around the Sessho Stone since ancient times. After this, the view looking down towards the Sessho Stone from the road on the way to Onsen Shrine. I will introduce Onsen Shrine in the next chapter. For now, let’s go back. On the left is Sai no Kawara. It seems that they don’t collect hot spring mineral deposits there anymore. I wanted to see the Jizo statue, so I walked a little on this side on the way back. On the road opposite the Jizo statue, there is an exhibition of the remains of the hot spring mineral deposits collection site. This concludes our tour of the Sessho Stone and the Sai no Kawara area. There is a small path just before the Sessho Stone at Onsen Shrine to the left, which leads to the shrine. Ishi no Ka Bridge. A fork in the road leading to a torii gate. Turn left here. You can see the Sessho Stone and Sai no Kawara below. You have arrived at the shrine. Enter from the side approach. Many names of hotels and inns are carved into the stone fence. This is the main approach. The shrine is said to have been built in the 600s. There is a record that in 869, the shrine was awarded the rank of Shinto god, Jushiijo. Nasu no Yoichi, a native of Nasu, prayed at Nasu Onsen Shrine and successfully hit the target with a fan during the Battle of Yashima in 1185. In honor of Yoichi, many people come to pray for victory. A bell to call the gods. In 1686, he was awarded the highest rank in Shinto, Shoichii . The lion dogs are so cute. The dragon at the temizuya has seaweed growing on it, which gives a sense of the era . Is it related to Nasu no Yoichi? There is an old stone statue of a horse. Return to the Sesshoseki parking lot via Sainokawara. However, even if you go down the main approach, I think you can reach the Sesshoseki parking lot on the way. Cheese Garden Nasu Main Store is located about a 20-minute drive from the Sessho-seki. We arrived at a large parking lot. The entrance can be seen between the lovely garden trees. This is a store that makes delicious cheesecakes. The store is spacious, and they offer tastings. There is also an in-store cafe. Next door is the restaurant “Shirasagi-tei.” We’ll say goodbye with a video of the path around the Cheese Garden.
