New Zealand North Island Part II Let’s start ~ Waitomo to Lake Taupo takes about 2 hours drive First Stop today is Huka Falls at Taupō You can always hear the sound of falls before seeing it Let’s stop by another tourist spot before entering Taupo city centre Craters of the Moon It takes about 40 minutes to walk along the trail. climb to the observation deck. At the bottom of the mountain, there are “smoky peaks” and a geothermal valley in the wilderness. You will feel like you are outside the earth. Continue driving to Taupo, prepare to check-in. I will stay at a B&B on Lake Taupo for 2 nights. Taupo is the largest freshwater lake in New Zealand, with an area about the same as Singapore. I found a very interesting attraction online – a McDonalds transformed from an airplane. ‘ Part of the dining area has been moved onto the plane. It’s so cool to eat McDonald’s in the cabin! You can also overlook the snow-capped mountain Mount Ruapehu through the window! The location of the cabin is still preserved, and there is also some small history to learn about. Before returning to the B&B, we walked on the walking path next to Lake Taupo . Tomorrow we plan to go to Whakapapa and take the cable car to see the snow-capped mountains. Today we first check-in at Airbnb and then go to the supermarket to buy ingredients. It’s only a 10-minute drive from the center of Lake Taupo to the mountains . The scenery at this 2-day Airbnb on the mountains is so beautiful! This beautiful scenery is right in front of our Airbnb ~ The whole house is perfect, as if in a fairy tale world. I want to just sit on the balcony all afternoon… ~ At dusk and sunset, the entire mountain scenery turns into Orange ~ Before setting off to the supermarket to do shopping, I went to the lake to watch the sunset on Lake Taupo. It was very peaceful and beautiful. It was really happy to wake up and set off! Today I will walk about 100km south to Whakapapa to see the snow-capped mountains. After a 1.5 hour drive, I almost arrived at Whakapapa Village and headed towards Mount Ruapehu. Mount Ruapehu is the largest active volcano in New Zealand. I unexpectedly saw Mt Ngauruhoe, which looks like Japan’s Mount Fuji . When you arrive at Whakapapa Village, get off the car and take a rest to look at the scenery. Before driving to Whakapapa in winter, pay attention to the official website. If the snow is too heavy, there is a chance of road closures, or you may need to install snow traps/snow chains. The weather today is very good, under the blue sky and white clouds. The snow-capped mountains are so beautiful! The further you go up the mountain, the more snow you see. The temperature in North Island in early July is not too cold, but the temperature in Whakapapa is about 8-10 degrees lower than in the city, so there is already snow, and you can see white. The snowy mountain scenery is so beautiful. No wonder it is so popular with tourists. Arrive at Whakapapa! Take out the early bird cable car ticket you booked online at the ticket vending machine. There is a sledding place in Happy Valley at the bottom of the mountain. First, take the cable car to the mountain and have lunch ~ Seats in the cable car It turned out to be warm ~ So luxurious. I like to take the cable car during the trip and see different scenery at high altitude. There is a Cafe with a beautiful view on Whakapapa Mountain. The super high floor-to-ceiling glass faces Mount Ruapehu. Although the meals are ordinary fast food, it looks good. Everything in this beautiful scenery is delicious ~ There is also a place to play in the snow for free on the mountain. Standing under the snow-capped mountains at such a close distance, I feel very small . On the way back down the mountain ~ The scenery of the Sky Waka cable car is really beautiful. Go back to Lake Taupo Airbnb to watch the sunset and cook dinner Enjoy the view of Lake Taupo again. New Zealand is really suitable for retirement. The pace of this trip has also slowed down a lot. The sun is about to set . This Airbnb feels like “escape from the world” when going out. After a whole day, I came back and sat on the balcony to watch the sunset . It was a very comfortable house. When I came to New Zealand, just “watching the sunset” was the best itinerary. Going to the supermarket, buying some ingredients and having a simple meal in the evening was the best way to experience Taupo. Before leaving, we took another look at the scenery of the Airbnb and headed to our next destination, Rotorua. Just in the morning, the sky was blue and white clouds, but in the blink of an eye, the sky became all white. We drove 40 minutes from Taupo to our first stop, Waiotapu. Thermal Wonderland Waiotapu Geothermal World has 3 sections of walking trails. You can walk through the entire Waiotapu in 1-2 hours. The geothermal world has a strong smell of sulfur. The champagne pool contains different minerals, forming a variety of magical green sulfur. The pool is a bit like a devil’s bath. After walking around, the weather started to get better. Even outside the geothermal park, you can see large and small steam coming out of the hot mud pool Mud Pool. I don’t know if it is different from the mud in Mud Bath. ~ (Like the bone pool in martial arts novels~~) After visiting the Geothermal World for 2 hours, we will go to the hot spring city Rotorua. It takes about 30 minutes from the Geothermal World to the center of Rotorua. Before arriving at the city center, we will pass another attraction, Redwoods. Treewalk Redwood Forest The trees in the redwood forest are more than 120 years old, and the height of the redwood trees is up to 20 meters. If you don’t walk on the suspension bridge, you can visit it for free . It’s good to walk around the forest and see the different scenery. The redwood forest meeting after dark Turn on the lights, I believe it will be very beautiful. After seeing the redwood forest, I calmed down and then I went to explore Rotorua, the most fun and lively place in the North Island! The redwood forest is located at the entrance of Rotorua, about a 10-minute drive from the city center.
