Hyogo Prefecture is one of the largest cities in western Japan, with Kobe as the prefectural capital. After overcoming the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake that occurred in 1995, the city of Hyogo has continued to develop. Please enjoy your trip to Hyogo. Meriken Park Meriken Park is made up of Meriken Wharf, which was built as a port for unloading foreign cargo, and a park created by reclaiming the Naka Jetty. It is home to many attractions such as the Kobe Port Tower, Kobe Maritime Museum, hotels, and monuments, and is a typical sight of the port city of Kobe. The American consulate was located at the Port of Kobe, which opened as an international trade port in 1868, and it is said that the word “Meriken” was derived from the pronunciation of “American,” which was used to refer to the port. Kobe Port Tower, a landmark of Kobe, has a beautiful drum-shaped exterior and is the world’s first unique pipe structure. From the observation room on the top floor, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the ocean, mountains, and city. At the Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park, the Meriken Wharf, which was damaged by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, has been preserved as is, and “BE KOBE” was born from the idea that “Kobe’s charm is its people.” Nankinmachi “Nankinmachi” is the name of a shopping street in Kobe City that measures approximately 270m from east to west and 110m from north to south, and is considered one of Japan’s three major Chinatowns, along with Yokohama Chinatown and Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown. It is said that Nankinmachi was born with the opening of the Port of Kobe, and since the Qing Dynasty at that time was not a treaty country, foreigners could not live in the settlements, so they settled on the west side and started doing business. After the Kobe Air Raid, it turned into a black market lined with barracks, but later a cooperative was established and a Chinatown regained its former prosperity. Today, it is a popular Chinatown with an exotic atmosphere, where you can enjoy authentic Chinese food and sweets, with buildings featuring Chinese-style designs. The Spring Festival Festival is an arrangement of the Spring Festival, which celebrates the New Year according to the Chinese lunar calendar, and each year a variety of traditional Chinese performing arts are performed and a variety of events take place. Kitano Ijinkan Kitano in Kobe was born in 1180 when Taira no Kiyomori commissioned Kitano Tenmangu Shrine to protect the demons of the capital. Ijinkan-gai was born in Kitano due to the shortage of land for settlements due to the increase in foreigners coming to Japan after the opening of the port, so construction of the north-south road was undertaken, and Ijinkan-gai was created in the northern area with a good view. The subsequent outbreak of World War II led to the expulsion of foreign residents, and the environment in Kobe, which had coexisted with foreigners, was greatly damaged. Ijinkan-gai had been disappearing due to the development of the city of Kobe, but it became popular due to the TV drama series “Kazevane” and the existence of Ijinkan became widely known. Although the Ijinkan was demolished due to war damage, deterioration, and earthquakes, it has been designated as a national important cultural property and is still open to the public as a museum and other tourist destination. Kobe Suma Sea World Kobe Suma Sea World is an aquarium that was opened in 2024 with the theme “All life is so big.” You can learn about the size of life. Himeji Castle Himeji Castle still has major buildings built in the early Edo period, such as the castle tower and turret, and is registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site, and is also known as Shirasagi Castle due to its beauty. It began with Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s construction of the castle and used it as a base for the invasion of the western countries, and was developed into its current form by Terumasa Ikeda, who ruled the Himeji domain as the first lord of the domain. It is said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi preferred black castles, but it became the current white castle when the Ikeda family, who had close ties with Tokugawa Ieyasu, who preferred white castles, became the castle owner. Himeji Castle is dazzlingly white, but it also had a dark time during World War II, when it was covered with black netting for four years to avoid being targeted by air raids. It is one of the 12 remaining castle towers in existence and is one of the representative remains of early modern castles in Japan, and was selected as one of the world’s top three castles, along with Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle and China’s Forbidden City. Takeda Castle Ruins Takeda Castle is said to have its origins in 1443, when Sozen Yamana, then the governor of Tajima, ordered his subordinate, the Otagaki clan, to build it, and he served as the castle’s lord for seven generations thereafter. However, in 1580, Hashiba Hideyoshi (later Toyotomi Hideyoshi) attacked Tajima, and Takeda Castle fell, leading to the fall of the Otagaki clan. The Takeda Castle Ruins is one of the few remaining intact ruins in Japan, and is also called “Tiger Castle” because it looks like a reclining tiger. Although there are no buildings left at Takeda Castle today, the stone walls from that time remain in their original form, and the fantastic scenery of a “castle in the sky” that appears floating in the sky when a sea of clouds forms is attractive. Takeda Castle is approximately 353 meters above sea level, and the relative height difference from the town of Takeda at the foot of the mountain is approximately 250 meters. The castle in the sky appears on days when the conditions are right, such as a large temperature difference between morning and evening, and high humidity. Arima Onsen Arima Onsen, the inner quarters of the Kansai region loved by Taiko and Hideyoshi, has been loved for a long time as one of Japan’s three ancient hot springs. The hot spring town spreads out in a mountain gorge at the foot of Momijidani on the north side of the Rokko Mountains, and its name comes from the word “Arima,” which means “between mountains,” hence the name Arima Onsen. You can enjoy hot springs with different qualities, the famous brown hot spring “Kinsen” and the colorless and transparent “Ginsen”, and this is an old-fashioned, cobblestone hot spring town. Arima Onsen’s existence dates back to the age of mythology, and it has appeared in various texts such as Nihon Shoki and Pillow Book. During the Edo period, hot springs were ranked like sumo wrestlers, and Arima Onsen was known throughout the country as the highest rank, “Ozeki of the West.” Kinosaki Onsen Kinosaki has been loved by people as a hot spring town since the Nara period, and its charming townscape, including historic temples and rows of willow trees, remains. The beauty and atmosphere of the Otoshi River, lined with willow trees, is loved by the novel god Naoya Shiga, and it is said that this is the reason why it has a different atmosphere depending on the season. One way to enjoy your stay is to change into a yukata and go out to visit the public baths. After strolling around in a yukata, you can return to your inn and spend a pleasant night. In Kinosaki, where the spirit of helping each other is alive and well, we provide hospitality based on the idea that “the entire town is one big inn,” and we strive to welcome all guests with care throughout the town. Kinosaki Onsen, which boasts a history of 1,300 years, is both a city of history and a city of literature, and you can enjoy visiting the hot springs while tracing back the time that has steeped in the land of Kinosaki. It is believed that “Onokoro Island”, which is said to have first been born in the “Myth of Birth of a Nation” written in the Awaji Island Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, refers to Awaji Island. Awaji Island is Japan’s largest remote island, belonging to Hyogo Prefecture, and boasts an area almost the same as the 23 wards of Tokyo, and the entire island is a relaxing resort area that many people visit. Connected to Honshu by the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, this bridge with a central span length of 1,991m has supported Japan’s transportation as the world’s longest suspension bridge for approximately 24 years since its completion. Beneath Onaruto Bridge, which connects Shikoku and Awaji Island, lies the Naruto Strait, one of the world’s three major tidal currents, and due to factors such as fast currents and unique topography, terrifying whirlpools occur.
