【佐渡島2泊3日旅②】佐渡金山と絶景ドライブ 金塊の重さに驚愕 Sado Island: Gold Mine Museum & Stunning Coastal Drive
B-Journey This is heavy Gold bar. What’s its market price? The 2-night, 3-day trip to Sado Island started with a visit to the crested ibis breeding facility on the first day And ate delicious fish at an izakaya in Ryotsu Day 2 Kamo Lake in Ryotsu Today, I’ll tour the island by rental car Departing Ryotsu at 9:00 AM Going around the northern coastline of Sado Island Heading to Sawata, my lodging for the night The distance is 100 km, but there are no highways on Sado Island Sado Island is 7/10 the size of Okinawa’s main island, so be prepared for the drive to take time Now I’ve reached the coastline The weather is nice today First stop is Futatsugame, the most famous scenic spot on the island A view resembling two turtles side by side This becomes a popular beach in summer A sandbar extends to Futatsugame, allowing you to walk across It looks like a mountain because of the grass growing on it But it’s actually a single massive rock In the distance is a place called Onogame Next, I am heading there There was a huge mountain along the road This is also a single massive rock From late May to early June, Onogame is covered in Tobishima daylilies There’s a famous tunnel ahead A tunnel carved through bedrock There was another tunnel here too The view was amazing, so I stopped the car This is just along the road, not even an official viewpoint Sado Island’s coastline is a continuous series of breathtaking views There was a large waterfall by the road It might be famous, but there were no signs explaining it Even with such amazing scenery, Sado doesn’t seem to boast about it much Next, I arrived at Sado’s Senkaku-wan Ageshima Park Entrance fee + sightseeing boat for 1,600 yen Those face-cutout boards you often see at tourist spots “Kimi no Na wa” or “What’s your name?” filmed here?” “Kimi no Na wa” is a movie with Keiko Kishi, right? This is Senkaku wan bay Senkaku wan bay was a filming location for the 1953 movie “Kimi no na wa” Starring Keiko Kishi and Keiji Sada (father of Kiichi Nakai) Maybe because it’s a weekday, but I’m the only passenger on the sightseeing boat A bridge called “Machiko Bridge,” named after the heroine Machiko from “Kimi no na wa” The sightseeing boat has a glass-bottomed section When the boatman threw feed, fish gathered They say the terrain resembles Nordic fjords Well… it is a spectacular view, but… My impression was “Just average“ But then it got amazing We’re heading into a narrow area – is this safe? This is crazy That was a bit scary Heading into even narrower areas The rocks are close Wow, that was incredible Like a theme park attraction Next, I am finally heading to Sado Kinzan (Gold Mine), a World Heritage site Inside the mine shaft: 10°C. “It’s cold.” Entrance fee: 1,500 yen Entering the Sodayu Tunnel, dug during the Edo period Starting to feel more like a gold mine tunnel So this is the robot you often see on. YouTube A recreation of the work to drain water seeping into the tunnels For some reason, there’s lots of “money” rather than “gold” Work to reinforce tunnels to prevent collapse A man working with his head down That was a bit scary The Sodayu Tunnel course is 500 meters long This is the work of digging for gold ore Digging in a quite dangerous location Like in “Night at the Museum,” maybe they all come alive at night Here they’re performing a ritual With something on their faces, like a secret society The striped patterns are veins, and they’re celebrating finding them A museum at the tunnel exit Scenes from the Edo period Display of large and small gold coins (replicas?) There was a gold bar You can touch it, but is this real? This is heavy How many kilograms is this? Barely able to hold it This weighs 12.5 kg and is worth 180 million yen This left the strongest impression at Sado Kinzan Sado Magistrate’s Office, not far from Sado Kinzan A reconstruction of an Edo-period building During the Edo period, Sado Island was under direct shogunate control The magistrate’s office served administrative and judicial functions The “oshirasu” courtroom often seen in period dramas But unlike other magistrate’s offices Sado’s also refined gold and silver to support the shogunate’s finances Lead used in gold refining The process of using lead to extract gold is complex Putting gold ore and lead into a crucible with ash Heating with charcoal to melt Finally, the gold floats on top of the ash Kitazawa Floating Concentrator near the magistrate’s office A facility built pre-war to separate gold and silver from ore Closed in 1952 Now only foundations remain, said to resemble “Laputa: Castle in the Sky” It does look a bit like Laputa Heading to tonight’s lodging in Sawata Arrived in Sawata around 5:30 PM Departed Ryotsu around 9:00 AM After circling Sado Island’s northern side Sado Island was larger than I imagined, taking considerable time Tonight’s lodging:
Hostel Perch
4 Suwacho, Kawaharada, Sado City The interior is quite stylish There’s a bar too Apparently it was formerly a ryokan The “Sado Souvenirs” sign might be from its ryokan days There’s a coworking space on the 2nd floor Staying in a dormitory again tonight Room-only rate: 4,563 yen per night
(Also has twin and triple rooms) Shower room on the 1st floor And a sauna Sauna costs extra 900 yen

Yakitori Yajima
208-219 Suwacho, Kawaharada, Sado City First, of course, draft beer (740 yen) Friendly owner Mr. Yajima Negima skewer (200 yen each) Sado beef skewer (700 yen) Surprised to find “Kachi-koma” sake from Toyama, my home town A popular sake rarely found even in Toyama But I’ll have Sado’s local sake “Kintsuru Junmai” (600 yen) Fruity flavor like green apples Owner Mr. Yajima recommended grilled dango skewers Grilled Sawane dango (220 yen) Sawane dango is a Sado specialty since the Edo period With sweet bean paste inside It is sweet 😅 For me, dried whole squid (530 yen) is better with alcohol… Got pleasantly drunk
Night view of Sawata’s sea Next video will feature the old houses of port town Shukunegi And Sado’s famous tub boats Please subscribe to my channel
