【神奈川/開成】田んぼに咲く絶景あじさい|“水辺の楽園”を歩く

Spotted a poster for the Ajisai (Hydrangea) Festival at the station. Hmm… the Hydrangea Festival looks worth checking out. This is Japan.
In June, hydrangeas bloom across the country. Zooming in to Kanagawa Prefecture,
about an hour from Tokyo. This is Kaisei Town, known for its hydrangeas blooming along rice fields.
We’re now heading to Ajisai-no-Sato, also known as the Hydrangea Village. A short 10-minute ride from Odawara brings us to Kaisei Station. It’s about a 35-minute walk from the station to Ajisai-no-Sato. So this time, we took the shuttle bus. It’s available during the festival for a small fee. During the festival, buses run every 20 minutes. It was full even from the first bus, but we made it on board! It’s a short walk from the bus stop to the Ajisai-no-Sato area. Looking at the map… it’s bigger than I expected! Just past the gate, and look at this view…! And so begins our hydrangea walk Seeing it in person… the beauty of hydrangeas blooming along the rice fields is truly breathtaking. The sound of flowing water… so quietly soothing. Heading to the main event area, with hydrangeas all along the way. Local produce and handmade goods were on sale here. We even spotted goods featuring “Ajisai-chan,” the local mascot. We’re heading to the Hydrangea Pond near the main event area. Along the way, we came across a gently spinning waterwheel. We’ve arrived at the Hydrangea Pond. I couldn’t help but whisper… wow. This is the highlight of the Hydrangea Pond—
a rainbow of flowers gently set afloat. After the hydrangeas, we’re off to visit Setoyashiki — a traditional Japanese farmhouse. Following the signs to Setoyashiki. Even near Setoyashiki, the Hydrangea Festival banners were fluttering. The nearby parking lot was full—just a heads-up! We’ve arrived at Setoyashiki. Even at the entrance, hydrangeas were quietly blooming. This hydrangea variety is Kaisei’s original: “Kaisei Blue”.
Its clear blue hue was simply beautiful. Passing through the gate into Setoyashiki. Setoyashiki was built in the Edo period (1603–1868), as the residence of the Seto family, the village head. Three centuries have wrapped this place in a gentle, timeless air. Oh, looks like we can go inside the house. Hearth, storehouse, and well—old Japan still lives here. From the veranda, a timeless quiet filled the view. Let’s take a little walk around the house. Outdoor displays also follow the theme: bamboo, hydrangeas, and water. A shishi-odoshi echoes through the stillness. After quite a bit of walking, I decided to take a break at the café. I found a café named “hacco,” themed around fermentation. There were so many options… it was hard to choose. I went with their homemade plum juice this time. This plum juice is made from the ume grown at the entrance of the estate. A gentle tartness with a refreshing sweetness. The heat and tiredness quietly melted away. Leaving Setoyashiki behind, I head back to the hydrangea fields. Spotted some plums just outside the gate.
These are the plums used to make that juice I had earlier. Back in the hydrangea fields once again. Couldn’t help but take in the hydrangeas one last time. With a touch of farewell, I head toward the gate. I hope to visit again next year. Back at Kaisei Station. On the train, heading home.
