Top 20 coastal views in Tohoku and northern Japan! Part 2 San’oiwa ( Iwate Prefecture ) San’oiwa is the general name for three rocks on the seashore in Taro-cho, Miyako City. It is one of the representative landscapes of the Sanriku Coast. From left to right: Onna-iwa (female rock), Otoko-iwa (male rock), and Taikoi-iwa (drum-shaped rock). The moment of dawn is approaching. The sunrise is so powerful that it seems to light the light of hope. The waves come and go, and strong winds blow across the sea. It took about 100 million years to form San-o-iwa. San’o-iwa in the daytime. It is an 8 km round trip, but you can enjoy the rugged cliffs of Todogasaki and the lighthouse, and the magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean. Todogasaki has been selected as one of the “100 best-kept secrets in Japan”. The trail leading to Todogasaki is a long one, but you can see the ocean along the way and enjoy forest bathing Kosode Coast ( Iwate Prefecture ) Tsuriganedo Cave Kosode Coast is a scenic spot located in the southeastern part of Kuji Bay. It is also famous for the “northernmost ama divers” who dive and fish. The Ama Center was lost in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Fortunately, the residential area was spared from the tsunami. Demonstrations of ama fishing by “Divers of the Northern Limits” have resumed. Goishi Coast ( Iwate Prefecture ) Goishi Coast is a 6 km coastline located in the southeastern part of Iwate Prefecture. It is designated as a national “scenic beauty” and “natural monument”. known as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls The rugged cliff tops are nesting grounds for the cormorants It has also been selected as one of the “100 best beaches in Japan” and “100 best white sand and green pine trees”. The commonly known “Thunder Rock”, with its thunderous bass sound, has been selected as one of the “100 Best Soundscapes in Japan”. Thunder Rock and Ranboya Valley Ana-tooshi-iso Ana-tooshi-iso is a spectacular spot that represents Goishi Coast Three large caves have been opened by wave erosion. A driveway runs along the cliffs on the west coast of the Oga Peninsula. It is a superb course where you can enjoy the beauty of the ocean and the cliffs. The Oga Peninsula is an area where you can fully enjoy the dynamic nature. Matsukawaura ( Fukushima Prefecture ) Matsukawaura is a brackish lake located in the northeastern part of Fukushima Prefecture It is separated from the Pacific Ocean by a sandbar called Nagasu. The Pacific Ocean is on the left and Matsukawaura is on the right. Unoo Cape Lighthouse Unoo Cape Lighthouse stands on a small hill northeast of Matsukawaura. There is also an observatory around it, from which you can see Matsukawaura and the Pacific Ocean. Matsukawaura is a scenic area dotted with islands of various sizes. The area was mentioned in the Manyoshu (The Anthology of Myriad Leaves) in ancient times, and in the Edo period, it was used as idle land for the feudal domain. It was selected as one of the “ 100 most scenic spots in Japan” and the “100 best white sand and green pine trees”. Matsukawaura was also devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The sandbars and levees that separated Matsukawaura from the open sea collapsed on a massive scale. Most of the nets, green laver and clams for aquaculture were also washed away. The road on the sandbar was also destroyed, and it took several years to restore it. Osu Coast Osu Coast is a sandy beach on the open sea side of the sandbar at Matsukawaura. Matsushima is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan The “Four Great Views of Matsushima” are the viewing spots on the hills and plateaus around Matsushima Bay. and offer a panoramic view of the 260 islands in Matsushima Bay. One of the Four Great Views, Yukan (Ogidani), is 55.8 meters above sea level. You can see Shiogama Bay and the islands spreading out in the southeast direction. In autumn and winter, it is a place where the divine sunrise can be seen. Giant maple trees can be seen along with the islands in Ougidani. It is one of the best spots for viewing the autumn leaves of Matsushima. Godaido Godaido is the symbolic building of Matsushima It is designated as an “Important Cultural Property” by the national government. During the Heian period (807), when Tamuramaro Sakanoue was on an expedition to Oshu Tamuramaro Sakanoue built Bishamondo Hall here The current hall was rebuilt by Date Masamune prior to the reconstruction of Zuiganji Temple. It is said to be the oldest Momoyama-style architecture in the Tohoku region. The view from the small island where Godaido stands is also exceptional. Matsushima’s Four Great Views : Soukan ( Otakamori ) One of the Four Great Views, Soukan (Otakamori) is 105.8 meters above sea level. This observation point is located on the east side of Matsushima Bay, almost in the center of Miyato Island. It is known as a famous place for sunsets overlooking Matsushima Bay to the west. We also recommend visiting the observation points of Matsushima, one of the “Three Most Views of Japan”! Oku-Matsushima Saga-kei ( Miyagi Prefecture ) Saga-kei is a scenic spot deep in Matsushima, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. Along with “Geibikei” in Iwate Prefecture and “Yabakei” in Oita Prefecture. Saga-kei is one of the “Three Great Ravines of Japan”. Otomegahama Beach Saga-kei is usually viewed from a sightseeing boat, but you can also take the Saga-kei Walkway You can see several beautiful sandy beaches surrounded by cliffs. Otomegahama Beach is located at the end of the Saga-kei Trail. In front of the beach, you can see Namijima Island with a lighthouse towering above it. Kayanosaki You can look down on the strange rock formations from the Saga-kei Trail. This rock cavity collapsed in the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake and is no longer visible. Genda Beach Genda Beach is a hidden beach in the middle of the Saganei Trail. From the beach, you can see the oddly shaped rocks of Saga-kei floating offshore. Oku-Matsushima is the area around Miyato-jima Island, which belongs to Higashi-Matsushima City. Oku-Matsushima is called “Oku-Matsushima” because it is located at the end of Matsushima Bay. ■三王岩 ( 岩手県 )
三王岩(さんのういわ)は宮古市田老町の海辺にある三つの岩の総称で、三陸海岸を代表する景観の一つです。寄せては返す波と、海を吹き抜ける強風が、約1億年もの歳月をかけて三王岩を形作りました。
■浄土ヶ浜 ( 岩手県 )
浄土ヶ浜(じょうどがはま)は、岩手県宮古市にある海岸で、三陸海岸を代表する景勝地の1つです。約5千万年前に形成された岩塊によって、外海と隔てられた穏やかな入り江が形成されました。浄土ヶ浜は環境省の「快水浴場百選」の「特選」に選ばれ、「日本の渚100選」にも選定されています。
■魹ヶ崎 ( 岩手県 )
魹ヶ崎(とどがさき)は、「本州最東端」に位置する岬であり、浄土ヶ浜の南方にある重茂半島の先端です。魹ヶ埼灯台は「日本の灯台50選」に選定されています。魹ヶ崎は「日本の秘境百選」に選ばれており、魹ヶ崎へ至る遊歩道は長丁場ですが、途中に大海原も望め、森林浴も満喫できます。
■小袖海岸 ( 岩手県 )
小袖海岸(こそでかいがん)は、久慈湾の南東部に位置する景勝地で、素潜りで海女漁を行う「北限の海女」でも有名です。東日本大震災で「海女センター」が消失しましたが、幸いにも住宅地は大津波による被災を免れ、「北限の海女」による素潜り漁の実演も再開しています。
■碁石海岸 ( 岩手県 )
碁石海岸(ごいしかいがん)は、岩手県南東部に位置する約6kmの海岸線で、国の「名勝」「天然記念物」に指定されています。ウミネコの繁殖地としても知られており、荒々しい断崖の上は営巣地となっています。穴通磯 ( あなとおしいそ ) は、碁石海岸を代表する絶景スポットで波の侵食作用により大きな洞門が3つ開いています。
■入道崎 ( 秋田県 )
入道崎(にゅうどうざき)は、男鹿半島の先端にある日本海に突出した岬です。入道崎は、男鹿半島の代表的な観光地となっており、白黒の縞模様が印象的な入道崎灯台も立ちます。入道崎灯台は、男鹿半島のシンボル的な存在で、「日本の灯台50選」に選定されています。男鹿半島および入道崎は夕陽の名所として知られ「日本の夕陽百選」にも選定されています。
■ゴジラ岩 ( 秋田県 )
ゴジラ岩は、男鹿半島南側の潮瀬崎にある奇岩で、シルエットがゴジラに似ており、人気があります。男鹿半島は「日本の夕陽百選」に選定されています。男鹿半島の西岸は断崖にドライブウエイが通り、大海原と断崖美を堪能できる絶景コースです。
■松川浦 ( 福島県 )
松川浦(まつかわうら)は、福島県北東部に位置する汽水湖で、長洲と呼ばれる砂州により太平洋と隔てられています。松川浦は大小の島が点在する風光明媚な風景が見られ、古くは万葉集にも詠われ、「日本百景」や「白砂青松百選」にも選ばれています。
■松島 ( 宮城県 )
松島(まつしま)は、安芸の宮島 (広島) 、丹後の天橋立 (京都) とともに、「日本三景」に数えられる景勝地です。「松島四大観」は、松島湾周辺の丘陵や高台にある展望地で、松島湾に浮かぶ260もの島々を一望できる場所です。
■奥松島 嵯峨渓 ( 宮城県 )
嵯峨渓(さがけい)は「日本三景」松島の奥地にある景勝地で、岩手県の「猊鼻渓」、大分県の「耶馬渓」と並び嵯峨渓は「日本三大渓」の一つに数えられます。嵯峨渓は遊覧船で船上から見学するのが一般的ですが、「嵯峨渓遊歩道」を歩けば、陸路からもアクセスでき、絶壁に囲まれた美しい砂浜が、いくつか見られます。
