塩狩駅は、北海道上川郡和寒町にあるJR北海道宗谷本線の駅である。1916(大正5)年、塩狩信号所として設置、1924(大正13)年に旅客駅に昇格した。塩狩峠の立地でありながら当初は塩狩温泉の開業もあり、乗車人数も増加し1963(昭和38)年頃までは1日平均100人以上あったが、その後徐々に減り続けて1973(昭和48)年には50人以下、1990年代の平成に入る頃には10人以下となった状態が続いている。駅周辺には、当駅開業前の鉄道事故、およびそれをモデルにした三浦綾子の小説「塩狩峠」に関連した施設や、塩狩峠一目千本桜への花見客や鉄道マニアの利用客もあるが、駅の維持管理費用は主としてふるさと納税で賄われているのが現状である。
Shiokari Station was established in 1916 as a simple signal station, but due to its location near the top of Shiokari Pass and the increase in settlers at the time and the opening of a hot spring facility nearby, it opened as a passenger station in 1924. From the late 1950s to the early 1960s, the average number of users exceeded 100 people per day, but this has gradually decreased since then, and although there are cherry blossom viewing spots nearby and it can get slightly crowded during certain seasons, the average number of users today is less than five people per day. As a result, passenger revenues are not enough to cover the maintenance and upkeep of the station building, so the town of Wassamu pays for it with taxes and other funds.
