Komakiyama Castle 2025

Today, I’m heading to Komakiyama Castle in Aichi Prefecture. I get off at Komaki Station on the Meitetsu line. There is a tourist information center, so I pick up some information there. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the station to Komakiyama Castle. After walking for a while, I can see the distant view of Komakiyama Castle. Komakiyama Castle was built in 1563 by Oda Nobunaga as a base for the conquest of Mino. The manhole cover had a design of Komakiyama Castle on it. I enter from the Yamakitabashi entrance. I can see that excavation work has been going on for many years. There are remains of a tiger’s mouth here. There are also information displayed at the rest area. I continue south. The bailey in front of me is called 402. It is the largest bailey at the foot of the mountain, so it is believed that Nobunaga’s residence was located there. The earthworks and moat of bailey 402 have been restored. The Aise River flows on the east side, forming a natural moat. I’ll go down to bailey 402. I continue further south. Up ahead is the Miyukibashi entrance. This was the castle’s mouth during the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute. It is a square-shaped castle’s mouth. There is a 3D model, so let’s go and check it out. This is the Historical Site Information Center “Rekishiru Komaki”. The admission ticket for “Rekishiru Komaki” is the same as the history museum at the top of the mountain. You can see a large restored earthwork. This earthwork was built by the Tokugawa army during the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute. Its maximum height is about 8m. This area is called Sakura no Baba. We went further east. From here, you can see the restored earthwork well. We go up from the main gate. Komakiyama Castle has a main road that stretches straight. Azuchi Castle and Komakiyama Castle are the only castles that have such a main road. Here is the grave of Tokugawa Munechika, the 9th lord of the Owari Domain. From here, turn right and head towards the main castle. It is known that stonework was placed on the main road. From here, there is a winding slope leading to the main castle. From here, you can see the restored stone walls. The overwhelming power of the site is overwhelming. It seems that the bedrock beneath the stone walls remains from the original period. The mock castle tower is clearly visible. The current mock castle tower was built by a businessman from Nagoya and donated to Komaki City. There are huge granite boulders around it that were used when the stone walls were constructed. We enter the mock castle tower. Inside is a history museum. We have reached the top floor. This is the north side. When the weather is good, you can see Inuyama Castle. This is the east side. Looking towards Nagoya. This is the west side, and you can see Mt. Kinka. You can see a fallen rock below. There are also remains of a tiger’s mouth here. Finally, there is an exhibition of the cross section of the earthworks on the north side, so let’s take a look. Thank you for watching.
