久喜提燈祭り「天王様」は、旧久喜町の鎮守である八雲神社の祭礼です。
天明3年（1783年）の浅間山の大噴火で、桑をはじめ夏作物が全滅したことによる生活苦や社会不安を取り除くため、祭礼用の山車を曳き廻して豊作を祈願したのが始まりと伝えられています。240余年の歴史と伝統を誇るこの祭りは、毎年7月12日と18日に行われます。

7町内から繰り出される7台の山車は、昼間は神話などを題材にした人物の人形を飾り、町内を巡行します。夜になると人形が取り外され、約500個の提燈で飾られた提燈山車へと早変わり。夏の夜を彩るこの提燈山車は、祭り最大のハイライトです。

The Kuki Lantern Festival “Tennosama” is a festival of Yakumo Shrine, the guardian deity of the former Kuki town.

It is said that the festival began when people pulled festival floats around to pray for a good harvest in order to relieve the hardships and social anxiety caused by the destruction of summer crops, including mulberry trees, due to the great eruption of Mt. Asama in 1783. This festival, which boasts over 240 years of history and tradition, is held every year on July 12th and 18th.

Seven floats from seven neighborhoods are decorated with dolls of people based on mythology and other themes during the day and parade around the town. At night, the dolls are removed and the floats are quickly transformed into lantern floats decorated with about 500 lanterns. These lantern floats, which light up the summer nights, are the biggest highlight of the festival.

The sight of young men rotating the floats, said to be the best in the Kanto region, as they parade through the city to the accompaniment of lively flutes, gongs, and drums is truly a spectacular sight.
