Top 20 coastal views in Tohoku and northern Japan! Part 1 Hotokegaura (Aomori Prefecture) Thirteen Buddhas One Buddha Hotokegaura is a coast located on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture It is a scenic spot where you can see the overwhelming beauty of oddly shaped rocks and cliffs. The Head of Nyorai A group of huge rocks looms over the area as if you have wandered into another world. It is a mysterious space that overwhelms visitors. Tenryu Rock Hotokegaura has been selected as one of the “100 Hidden Places of Japan” It is also designated as a national “scenic beauty” and “natural monument”. Hotokegaura can be seen from the observation deck along the national road Tsugaru Peninsula Evening approaches at Hotokegaura The natural formations created by the rough waves and wind and snow of the Tsugaru Straits create a magnificent scale and mysterious landscape brings us a sense of awe and great emotion. At Hotokegaura in the evening, you can experience an even more fantastical world It is an amazing sightseeing spot representing Shimokita Peninsula. Tai-jima ( Aomori Prefecture ) Tai-jima is an oddly shaped rock island located on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. It is hard to believe that it was formed naturally. Tai-jima and its surrounding area are designated as a marine park. From spring to fall, you can take a sightseeing boat to explore the surrounding area. Atagoyama Park on the opposite shore is famous for its cherry blossoms. Adjacent to the park is a small hill-like Mt. Atago, where you can enjoy a light lunch while looking down on Tai-jima Island. Tai-jima changes its appearance depending on where you look. As you follow the prefectural road, you will see that the head and tail of the island were separate islands It looks more like a whale than a sea bream. If you continue on the prefectural road from Tai-jima Island, you will reach Cape Hokkai. Cape Hokkai Cape Hokkai is known as the northern limit of the Japanese macaque habitat. You can also see the Tsugaru Peninsula across the Hiradate Strait. Including Hotokegaura, the Shimokita Peninsula offers some amazing views. Oma-zaki ( Aomori Prefecture ) Oma-zaki is the northernmost cape on Honshu, located on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. Oma-zaki is a flat terrain with a paved quay. Tappizaki Lighthouse Tappizaki Lighthouse is a large white lighthouse that stands at the tip of Cape Tappi and has been selected as one of the “50 Best Lighthouses in Japan” On the Ura Tappi Coast, located south of Cape Tappi there are huge rocks and cliffs washed by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan The west coast of the Tsugaru Peninsula, including Cape Tappi and Ura Tappi, has been selected as one of the “100 Best Hidden Lands in Japan” It is also famous for its “Stairway National Road” consisting of stairs and sidewalks. It is also famous as a flight route for migratory birds crossing the Tsugaru Straits. Birdwatchers often visit this area. The natural grassy area offers an open landscape and a great view of the Pacific Ocean. Yodo no Matsubara Yodo no matsubara is a pine forest about 3 km north of the lawn. Tanesashi Coast has been selected as one of the “100 best white sand and green pine forests in Japan” and It has also been selected as one of the “100 best places to walk in Japan”. Ashigezaki Observatory The northern part of the Tanesashi Coast is a reef area with rugged rocky outcrops. The “Ashigezaki Observatory” and “ Samekado Lighthouse” offer a panoramic view of the coast. The Ashigezaki Observatory is the starting point of the Tanesashi Coastal Trail. From the observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and the coast. In June, the area around the observatory is filled with the flowers of the Hamanasu (Rhus succedanea). The area is also a treasure trove of diverse plants such as daisies and day lilies. Below the observatory, you can see a reef of exposed rough rocks. In early May, rare flowers can be seen in this area. Mizubashou Mizubashou often grows in colder marshlands. It is rare to see them near the coast. The Tanesashi Coastal Trail, which starts from the Ashigezaki Observatory, extends for about 5 km to a natural grassy area. It has been selected as one of the “100 best walking trails in Japan”. Osuga Beach Osuga Beach is a sandy beach located to the south of the Ashigezaki Observatory It has been selected as one of the 100 best beaches in Japan. Osuga Beach, a part of Tanesashi Coast, is about 2 km long. It is also known as the beach of “singing sand”. Samekado Lighthouse Samekado Lighthouse is located behind the Ashigezaki Observatory and has been selected as one of the 50 best lighthouses in Japan. Taihei Farm is located right next to Samekado Lighthouse. Taihei Farm is famous for its thoroughbred horses. It has produced many famous horses and racehorses. Shirahama Beach Shirahama Beach is a sandy beach on the northern part of the Tanesashi Coast It has been selected as one of the “100 Best Bathing Beaches” by the Ministry of the Environment It is known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Tohoku region. It is well connected by rail and has a variety of facilities. A view from Shirahama toward Samekado Lighthouse and Osuga Beach in the north. Osuga Beach has been selected as one of the “100 best beaches in Japan” Shirahama Beach is adjacent to the south side of the beach. including Kaburajima Island, famous for its colony of petrels. It is a wonderful coast with a series of characteristic scenic spots. Kitayamazaki ( Iwate Prefecture ) Kitayamazaki is a cliff coast located in the northeastern part of Iwate Prefecture. Its coastal beauty is said to be the best in Japan. The 200-meter-high cliffs are also called the “Alps of the Sea”. The dynamic coastline stretches for about 8 km. The ocean turns red as dawn approaches. The divine sunrise enhances the spectacular view of Kitayamazaki. The cliffs, which were formed over an uncanny number of years, have a formidable beauty that transcends human understanding. You can see the beauty of formations that transcend human knowledge. Kitayamazaki Second Observatory Kitayamazaki has a promenade that leads to the bottom of the cliffs and an observatory. You can view the powerful beauty of the cliffs from various angles and altitudes. Kitayamazaki First Observatory Kitayamazaki belongs to the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park. It is one of the representative landscapes of the Sanriku Coast. The rock surface is covered with green pine trees The scenery is somewhat reminiscent of a Japanese painting. Bentenzaki and Kitayama Beach ( Iwate Prefecture ) Bentenzaki is a cliff cape in the southern part of Kitayamazaki, which has a spectacular view of the coast. Bentenzaki is the farthest cape when seen from the observation platform at Kitayamazaki. Part of a hollow “sea cave” can be seen from the Bentenzaki walking trail. Rikuchu Bentenzaki Lighthouse stands on the hillside of Bentenzaki. The unique red and white colors are impressive. The area around the lighthouse overlooks the sea and offers a spectacular view. Kitayama Beach Kitayama Beach is a sandy beach slightly north of Bentenzaki. The beach is flanked on both sides by sheer cliffs. There is a trekking course using hand-dug tunnels on the cliffs. It continues to Kitayamazaki and has been selected as one of the “100 best walking spots”. Unosu Cliff ( Iwate Prefecture ) The Unosu ( Cormorant’s nest ) Cliffs are one of the most scenic spots on the Sanriku Coast. Five lines of cliffs, each 200 meters high, stretch along the Pacific Ocean. The name “Unosu Cliff” comes from the fact that cormorants nest in the middle of the cliffs. To the north of the Unosu Cliffs is Kitayamazaki, which offers a spectacular view of the coast. This is an area where you can enjoy one of the most dynamic and spectacular views in Sanriku. Kurosaki ( Iwate Prefecture ) Kurosaki is a cliff cape located north of Kitayamazaki. Kurosaki is home to the chalk Kurosaki Lighthouse It was selected as one of the 50 best lighthouses in Japan. The rugged cliffs of Sanriku and the ocean can be seen from the lighthouse. There is a well-maintained promenade around Kurosaki. You can see the wonderful scenery from the lighthouse and the Anmoura observatory. There is also a nature trail leading from Kurosaki to Kitayamazaki It has been selected as one of the “100 best walking trails”. Anmoura Observatory The Anmoura Observatory is located at the end of the stairs from the garden of the National Guest House. You can see a sheer cliff of 150m to 200m high. The six prefectures in the Tohoku region (Aomori, Iwate, Akita, Miyagi, Yamagata, and Fukushima) are all large in area and offer a wide variety of natural scenery from the sea to mountainous regions.
In this video, we introduce 20 locations with spectacular coastal scenery in the Tohoku region! In the first part, we will cover 6 sites in Aomori Prefecture and 4 sites in Iwate Prefecture that offer spectacular coastal scenery!

■仏ヶ浦 ( 青森県 )
仏ヶ浦(ほとけがうら)は、青森県下北半島に位置する海岸で、圧倒的な奇岩・断崖美が見られる景勝地です。まるで異世界にでも迷い込んだかのような巨岩群が迫り、訪れた者を圧倒する不思議な空間が広がります。国の「名勝」「天然記念物」にも指定されています。
■鯛島 ( 青森県 )
鯛島(たいじま)は、青森県下北半島に位置する奇岩の島で、春から秋にかけて、遊覧船で周囲を観光できます。また対岸の愛宕山公園は桜名所としても有名です。鯛島は見る位置によって姿が変わり、県道を進むと、頭部と尾が別々の島だったと分かり、鯛 (たい ) というよりも鯨 (くじら ) に見えます。
■大間崎 ( 青森県 )
大間崎(おおまざき)は、青森県下北半島にある本州最北端の岬です。大間崎は平坦な地形で、舗装された岸壁になっており、マグロの一本釣りを模ったモニュメントや「本州最北端」の石碑が立っています。大間埼灯台は、大間崎の沖合にある弁天島にあり、「日本の灯台50選」に選定されています。
■竜飛崎 ( 青森県 )
竜飛崎(たっぴざき)は、青森県津軽半島の最北端に位置する岬で、付近は標高約100mの断崖絶壁の台地となっています。竜飛崎には、灯台を中心に遊歩道が整備されており、大海原を一望しながら周辺散策を楽しめます。竜飛埼灯台は、竜飛崎の突端に立つ白亜の大型灯台で「日本の灯台50選」に選定されています。
■蕪島 ( 青森県 )
蕪島(かぶしま)は、青森県八戸市の近郊に位置する島で、ウミネコの一大繁殖地として知られています。現在の蕪島は、本土と陸続きとなっていて、参道を登っていくと蕪嶋神社が鎮座しています。島の上から見下ろすウミネコのコロニーは圧巻で、国の「天然記念物」に指定されており、鳴き声の大合唱は「音風景百選」にも選ばれています。
■種差海岸 ( 青森県 )
種差海岸(たねさしかいがん)は、青森県八戸市の東部にある海岸で、国の「名勝」に指定されています。種差海岸は南北約12kmにわたって続き、天然芝や松林、大小の奇岩群や砂浜など、変化に富んだ景観が見られます。種差海岸は「日本の白砂青松100選」や「遊歩百選」にも選ばれています。
■北山崎 ( 岩手県 )
北山崎(きたやまざき)は、岩手県北東部に位置する断崖絶壁の海岸で、その海岸美は日本随一といわれます。高さ200mもの断崖は「海のアルプス」とも称され、ダイナミックな海岸線が約8kmにわたって続きます。北山崎には断崖の下に続く遊歩道と展望台が整備されており、迫力ある断崖美を様々な角度・高度から眺められます。
■弁天崎と北山浜 ( 岩手県 )
弁天崎(べんてんざき)は、絶景海岸「北山崎」の南方にある断崖岬で、北山崎の展望台から見ると最奥に位置する岬です。弁天崎の丘陵の上には「陸中弁天埼灯台」が立ち、赤と白のユニークなカラーが印象的です。
北山浜(きたやまはま)は、弁天崎のやや北方にある砂浜で、ビーチの両端には切り立つ断崖絶壁が迫ります。断崖には手掘りの隧道を利用したトレッキングコースもあり、北山崎まで続き「遊歩百選」に選定されています。
■鵜の巣断崖 ( 岩手県 )
鵜の巣断崖(うのすだんがい)は、三陸海岸を代表する景勝地の一つで、太平洋に沿って標高200mにも及ぶ5列の断崖絶壁が続きます。断崖の中腹にウミウの営巣地があることにちなんで、「鵜の巣断崖」と名付けられたとされます。鵜の巣断崖の北方には、絶景海岸「北山崎」もあり、ダイナミックな三陸屈指の絶景を満喫できるエリアです。
■黒崎 ( 岩手県 )
黒崎(くろさき)は、北山崎の北方に位置する断崖の岬です。黒崎には白亜の黒埼灯台が立っており、「日本の灯台50選」に選定されています。黒崎周辺は遊歩道がよく整備されており、灯台やアンモ浦展望台から素晴らしい風景を望めます。
