Mochiko:Hi, it’s Mochiko! Monet:And I’m Monet! Monet:Where even are we!? Mochiko:Today we’re driving on a prefectural road in Iwanai Town, in Central Hokkaido: Mochiko:Hokkaido Route 840, the Notsuka?Kiyozumi Line. Monet:Ah right, we’re in Iwanai Town… Mochiko:Right now, we’re in the Notsuka area of Iwanai, Mochiko:and this road leads to the Kiyozumi area. Monet:I see, so the road is named after the areas it connects. Mochiko:Exactly. Mochiko:The Notsuka area has tourist hotels, a ski resort, an auto-campground… Mochiko:inns, an art museum, hot springs, and an observatory where you can see the Sea of Japan from Mt. Maruyama. Monet:Wait… Monet:Isn’t that kind of a lot? Mochiko:Yeah, it’s a region focused on tourism. Mochiko:There are also cottages, a park golf course, a forest park, and even a ruined hotel. Monet:Okay, okay, I get it already! Monet:If I hear any more, I’m going to get depressed that I can’t go sightseeing! Mochiko:Really? Well, I’ll stop then… Monet:Wait a second, did you just casually throw in “ruined hotel”? Mochiko:Well, at least it’s free to visit… Mochiko:What do you think? Monet:Come on! That’s not the point! I don’t want to go, give me a break! Mochiko:Just kidding, sorry! Monet:Can’t be helped. I’ll forgive you. Mochiko:…… Monet:So there’s a ski resort in the Notsuka area, right? Mochiko:Yeah, that’s right. Monet:I usually picture ski resorts as being in valleys, paired with mountains or hills, Monet:but this area’s already pretty high in elevation. Monet:We’ve been going downhill this whole time… Mochiko:Yeah, and it was a long climb when we came here. Monet:It’s surprisingly steep, actually. Monet:I had to press the accelerator down quite a bit. Mochiko:Yeah, I noticed that too… Mochiko:I mean, there’s an observatory around here. Monet:Oh yeah, I forgot there was one. Monet:We should’ve gone up there at least… Mochiko:Well, maybe next time. Monet:By the way, are there any other roads up here besides this one? Mochiko:Nope. Monet:…So, no next time? Mochiko:Yeah… I guess not. Monet:I almost got my hopes up and waited for nothing. Monet:But the view from here is still really nice. Mochiko:It really is?you can catch glimpses of it here and there. Mochiko:Since we’re heading downhill, you can’t really see the town below, though. Monet:Those thick clouds in the distance look like rain clouds… Mochiko:…Might be pouring on the way back. Monet:We’ve been driving for a while without hitting any signals or stop signs? Monet:How long is this road, anyway? Mochiko:Ah, the distance? Mochiko:It’s 5.252 kilometers in total. Mochiko:There’s one right turn at an intersection, Mochiko:but other than that, it’s a straight road all the way. Monet:Ohh, so it’s just been like this the whole time, huh… Mochiko:The Kiyozumi area at the end is a more urban zone, so buildings will start appearing as we get closer. Mochiko:Also, along the way there’s a historic company from Iwanai Town? Mochiko:a business called Nippon Asparagus. Monet:Wow, a long-standing asparagus company? Mochiko:Nope, actually it has nothing to do with asparagus. Monet:……? Mochiko:Asparagus in Japan originated in Iwanai Town, Mochiko:and this company is named after someone who contributed to that history. Monet:So the name’s just symbolic? Mochiko:They used to do canned agricultural products back in the day, Mochiko:and it seems like asparagus was part of that. Monet:But that was back then… They do something else now, right? Mochiko:Yeah, apparently they’ve shifted to Mochiko:soft drinks and frozen foods. Monet:Ahh, just another sign of the times, huh… Mochiko:Oh, and there’s also a Hello Work (job center) along the way. Monet:Not today! No job talk when I’m off work! Monet:Haha, okay!? Mochiko:Yeah, yeah… Mochiko:Alright, the next signalized intersection is the end of the route. Monet:Oh wow, we’ve already driven that far? Monet:That went by fast… Mochiko:Hehehe, maybe it was shorter than we expected? Mochiko:And with that, we’ve reached the end! Monet:Good job! Mochiko:That was Hokkaido Route 840, the Notsuka?Kiyozumi Line. Monet:A tourist area where you can enjoy leisure and hot springs! Monet:Still, it was quite a distance from the city area. Mochiko:Yeah, definitely. Mochiko:But since there weren’t many signals or traffic, Mochiko:and we were surrounded by nature, it was pretty relaxing. Monet:Ohh, I get it now! Monet:…Well, in the end, we just drove straight through without sightseeing and came back… Monet:Mochiko, anything you want to say for yourself? Mochiko:Should we go sightseeing at that hotel ruin? Monet:Okay, okay! I’m sorry! Mochiko:Hahaha, that’s what I thought.
