There is a dahlia picking garden called “DAHLIA” where 200,000 dahlias of 130 different types are carefully raised. As I am still traveling, I will not be able to pick dahlias, but I hope that one day I will be able to hold them in my arms full. I want to pick dahlias as much as I can.I would like to talk about dahlias, my favorite flower.Dahlias are perennial plants in the Asteraceae family, and their Japanese name is Tenjiku Peony.Dahlias are native to Mexico and Guatemala. It was introduced to Madrid, Spain in 1789 in the highlands of Spain , and is said to have first been brought to Japan from the Netherlands in 1842 to Nagasaki during the Edo period. As for its Japanese name, Tenjiku Peony, The word “jiku” can refer to India or just a vaguely distant foreign country, and here it is the latter meaning. It also comes from the flower’s resemblance to a peony. The flowering period of dahlias is generally from early summer to autumn. Dahlia bulbs vary depending on the region, altitude, planting time, and weather conditions of the year.Dahlias are native to the highlands of Mexico and Guatemala, so they are relatively intolerant of heat , and blooming slows down during the peak of the summer heat.Dahlia bulbs are not cold-resistant and must be dug up before frost. When visiting a dahlia garden, we recommend checking the flowering status on each garden’s website. There are over 30,000 varieties of dahlias. Dahlias come in a wide variety of colors, flower sizes, and blooming styles through selective breeding.Dahlias come in red, orange, pink, yellow, white, and purple , and there are also flowers that are a combination of these two colors. The size of dahlias is classified into 6 types, ranging from small ones under 5 cm to super huge flowers of over 25 cm.Dahlias are classified into about 15 types of blooming types: single bloom, anemone bloom, cactus bloom, Typical examples include decorative blooms and pom-pom blooms.I think the greatest appeal of dahlias is that they are so diverse and unique, not only in the color, size, and shape of each variety, but also in the condition of bloom and individual differences between each flower, so that no two flowers are exactly the same.Dahlias have a short history of distribution as cut flowers, starting in 2000.Breed improvement Thanks to advances in production, production, and distribution technology, cut flowers can now be shipped throughout the year. The main production areas for cut flowers are Nagano, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima. The colorful and unique dahlias blooming in the vast 7,000-square-meter garden gave me a lot of energy. After this, I went to “Jidori Ramen” in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. A total of more than 100 km, about 2 and a half hours of travel. On this day, we climbed Irohazaka in the early hours of the morning, and the total travel distance from Nikko City to Inawashiro Town was 280 km.It was the most labor-intensive day of this trip.During the difficult process, we saw the trees in full bloom. Soothed by Ria, I move on. Thank you for the local chicken ramen from Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. I had a mildly flavored salt ramen based on Aizu local chicken. This is a guest house that has been renovated from an old private house in Inawashiro Town, Fukushima Prefecture. It has a calm atmosphere that is typical of an old private house.
