Ueda, Sugadaira IC Ueda is a historic city nestled in eastern Nagano Prefecture. Constructed in 1583 by Sanada Masayuki, Ueda Castle is renowned for its successful defenses against the Tokugawa clan. Today, the castle ruins are part of Ueda Castle Park, a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in spring. A preserved Edo-period merchant district, Yanagimachi Street offers a glimpse into Japan’s past with its traditional architecture and local shops. Located in Bessho Onsen, Anraku-ji Temple is notable for its octagonal three-story pagoda, the only one of its kind in Japan, designated as a National Treasure.
