Geothermal hot spring area “Waita Onsenkyo” Press the subtitle button or CC button to enjoy full subtitles. Hello everyone, this is Watatabi. This time, I’m heading to a hot spring area in Kumamoto Prefecture, and I’d like to stop by tourist spots and hidden hot springs along the way. The location is Oguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. I’m heading to “Waita Onsenkyo,” a hot spring area with abundant geothermal heat that appears in the mountains on the border with Oita Prefecture. Today, the weather is rare. And this majestic view of Aso is impressive no matter how many times I come. The circumference of the Aso Caldera is about 128 km. The scenic road that runs for 45 km along the northwest ridge is Prefectural Route 339 North Outer Rim Otsu Line and Route 45 Aso Park Kikuchi Line, commonly known as the “Milk Road.” The name “Milk Road” comes from the fact that it was conceived as a road for transporting milk. Waita Onsenkyo is a general name for the hot springs that spread out at the foot of Mt. Wakugai, and there are six hot springs: Hage-no-yu, Take-no-yu, Suzugaya, Jigokudani, Asozuri, and Yamakawa. First, we stop by Meoto Taki, which is on the way. Is this it? Is this it ? Yes, it is. We have arrived. We have arrived at Meoto Taki. There were so many reviews, so we decided to come here. Let’s head there. There is a promenade next to the parking lot. How far do we walk? As expected, this Aso has a great view. Even when driving, the view was great. This building looks like a souvenir shop, but it was closed today. This is the souvenir shop. There are a lot of votive plaques. It seems you can eat there too. It seems they have soft serve ice cream and other things. The waterfall is here. It’s really dark. We go down about 120 steps. It’s amazing, there is a lot of water. It’s not raining or anything. It suddenly got cooler. It’s really cool. In Japan, there is only one “Meoto Taki” waterfall, which is called the waterfall of encounter and marriage. The waterfall on the left is Otoko Taki, 15m high, and the waterfall on the right is Metoki, 12m high. The two waterfalls of the “Meoto Taki” fall here from different rivers and become one stream. The waterfall on the left is Otoko Taki, which flows from the Tanohara River, and the waterfall on the right is Metoki, which flows from the Oda River. There is a legend that has been passed down from ancient times about this waterfall. At Metoki, a samurai who was going to Edo on a daimyo-kotai (alternate attendance) fell in love with a village girl and promised to marry her. However, the marriage did not come to fruition, and the village girl threw herself into the waterfall, which is the Metoki. The legend of the “Meotoki” waterfall is that the samurai was sucked into the waterfall and they were united. The romantic words are written on the sign. “United at Meoto Taki, overflowing love flows from the Chikugo River to the Ariake Sea.” Wow, amazing! It’s true that this is the first time I’ve seen such a waterfall. The waterfall on the left is Otoko Taki, but Metoki has more water and power. There is a rock in the middle, and it is a mysterious space. There is a big tree growing in the middle. The valley continues like this on the other side. A waterfall is flowing here with great force. It was a very powerful waterfall. It’s really amazing. Climb these stairs and return to the parking lot. If the shop here was open, the parking lot would be right there, but today it’s closed, so you have to walk a little further. It was a very nice waterfall. This place is quite close to Kurokawa Onsen and Manganji Onsen, but I’m going to go to a hot spring I’ve never been to. It seems you can bathe there for 100 yen. So I’d like to go there. It’s 7.6km from here, and it seems to take 12 minutes. There was a sign that said “Caution: Cows.” It seems like you should turn left from that. By the way, there are no signs for the hot springs. It’s raining steadily. There are houses. Eh? ? ? Wait a minute… can I go through? Isn’t this someone’s house? Wait a minute… it looks like someone’s house. I’ve come close to the hot spring. It seems that cars can’t go beyond this point. There was a space to park there, so I parked there. The hot spring seems to be this way. There really are no signs or anything. There’s no sign or anything, so it’s a really hidden hot spring. There are rice fields all around. There’s nothing. There it is. I think it’s this. There’s a hot spring all by itself. We’ve arrived. This is Yakushiyu. I think its official name is “Teraono Onsen”? Just standing here, you can smell the sulfur (hydrogen sulfide). The spring quality is of course hydrogen sulfide spring. 100 yen for adults. Hmm? Where do you put the money? The right side is the women’s bath, and the left side is the men’s bath. Let’s take a look. It’s really good! It looks like this. This is the changing room. The view is like this. There’s no soap or shampoo. Here. It seems you put money here. 100 yen for adults, 50 yen for children. Only for elementary school students and younger. Let’s go in. It ‘s a little lukewarm. There’s a strong smell of sulfur (hydrogen sulfide). I think the spring temperature is about 38 degrees. It’s just right for this season. It’s 100% natural spring water. It’s so luxurious to be able to enter this bath for 100 yen. The source of the water isn’t that warm either. It’s too good… It’s been a while since I’ve entered a hot spring that smells so much of sulfur (hydrogen sulfide). This is what it looks like from above. I couldn’t help but take a long bath. It was midday on a weekday so no one was there. This bath is warmer than this one. It’s about 35 or 36 degrees. The women’s bath is right below. If a woman sits next to you, you can see her legs, so it’s a bit scary. The women’s bath is right next to it. It’s only about 150cm high, so it looks like you’ll make eye contact. I entered the hot spring. It’s lukewarm, but it warms my body. It’s warm. I can’t stand the smell of sulfur (hydrogen sulfide). I’m really grateful that I can enter for 100 yen. I recommend it to people who like sulfur springs. It was really good. If you’re in the area, please stop by. Since it is a town hot spring, please pay the bathing fee and follow proper manners. I feel great. Is it okay to park here? My grandpa just went to the hot spring. It was absolutely amazing. The smell of rotten eggs permeated his body and it was amazing. I want a sulfur (hydrogen sulfide) perfume. If there is one, I will buy it. lol From here, we head to “Waita Onsen” which is 5.5km away. I have been there before, but I would like to take a bath in another family bath from the one I went to last time. It takes about 10 minutes to get there from here. We will arrive soon. When I came here before, I’m sure there was an earthquake on the Noto Peninsula after I left the hot spring. It was January 1st, so I came here on New Year’s Day. We have arrived at a place called Waita Onsenkyo. I would like to take a stroll around the town. The building on the left of the “Yukemuri no Yakata” is the restaurant. This is the restaurant, but it seems to be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Unfortunately, it is not open. Next to this restaurant, you can enjoy day bathing. It seems that you can steam vegetables, eggs, meat, and fish here. This is it. The usage fee is 300 yen per time. 500 yen for up to 20 kg. This is amazing. It seems to be for commercial use. It’s extremely hot just being around here. It’s muggy. Behind this is a cowshed. There is a lot of straw inside. But it doesn’t smell at all. I imagine cowsheds to be smelly. “They change the water every time, they’re open 24 hours a day, and you can stay overnight .” Being open 24 hours a day is extremely helpful. If you’re traveling, it’s extremely helpful to have a hot spring that’s open 24 hours a day like this. This is “Take no Yu Daijigoku.” It’s 99.1 degrees Celsius. It’s almost boiling point. Amazing… There is also a steaming pot here. It seems that only residents can use it. There are hot springs in many places. I think this is a bath for residents only. It’s good to come anytime. Last time I came here on New Year’s Day, so the temperature was quite low, and the steam was amazing, but today it’s about 25 degrees, so the steam isn’t as noticeable. But there’s smoke rising everywhere. Steam is coming out of places like this. What does this mean? Is it boiling? Smoke is coming out of the blocks. It’s like a tour of the hells of Oita Prefecture. You can feel the breath of the earth. It’s really amazing. This is my second time visiting, and it’s still amazing. It’s like a world in a painting. Steam is coming out of the chimney like this. It ‘s coming out everywhere. This gets me excited. This river also contains hot spring ingredients, so it’s cloudy white. Wow, there’s really steam rising here and there. This river is amazing too. It must be really hot. Where is it coming from? It’s sticky with hot spring ingredients. There’s a lot of steam rising from the ground. This wood is also burnt by the heat. It feels like it’s not Japan. It is Japan. Look. Is the iron melting? Or is it rusty and falling apart? It looks like it would crack if you stood on it. By the way, this town is extremely hot. There’s so much steam. If you come here in the winter, the road becomes so white with steam that you can’t see it. The heat in this town is amazing. I’m sweating. The townscape is very impressive. Now, let’s head to the family bath. The family bath is a two-minute drive from here, so let’s head there. There’s one here too . It seems to be open 24 hours a day. There are many places around here that are open 24 hours a day. Hage no Yu? That’s right, Hage no Yu! Lol, it ‘s written in kanji, “hage”… lol, this one is written in hiragana. How rude. Lol The regular closing day is Thursday, but is it different today? Today is Wednesday, so it’s dangerous. There are a lot of customers. We’ve arrived. This is “Kunugi-yu at Hage no Yu Onsen.” This is the family bath. So I’ll go in. This and this are the resting rooms. You can steam vegetables and eggs here. They sell things. They sell overnight sets, towels, cleansing wash… and for some reason they sell salt. Maybe it’s for hot spring eggs. They also sell toothbrushes and steaming strainers. Let’s go right away. Wow, these stairs. This is the special room called “Momiji” that we’re going to go around now. There are many baths lined up like this. Let’s go in right away. First, the dressing room looks like this, it’s quite spacious. The bathing method is to first plug the bathtub and then put 2500 yen into the coin timer. This is the coin timer. This is the bathroom. It’s amazing. As expected of a special room. First, plug the bathtub. It’s nice to have a type where you can fill it yourself like this. It’s fun and you can enter a clean hot spring every time. It’s 2500 yen for 60 minutes. The cheapest room was 1500 yen. This is how the hot spring comes out. It costs 500 yen, but I gave 3000 yen to the receptionist and received 3000 yen worth of 500 yen coins. The bath time is 60 minutes, and the hot water stops 15 minutes before. It takes 7 minutes to fill up. There is a rinse-in shampoo and body soap. I can’t wait for the hot water to fill up. It’s quite hot, so I’ll add some water. It’s pretty hot. I probably can’t get in without adding water. This one isn’t that hot, so I think I can get in without adding water, but I’m not sure. I’ll leave this one without adding water. It seems that you have to unplug the bath when you leave. Sorry, the cheapest family bath is 1000 yen. 50 minutes is 1000 yen and 60 minutes is 1500 to 3000 yen. It seems you can also stay overnight here. The hot water from this one flows into this bath. This way it fills up quickly. It might be even better to come during the autumn leaves season. I can’t wait until it’s all filled up, so I’ll go in. The water is just right. It’s a little hot, I guess. The water is colorless and transparent. This isn’t just a family bath, it’s also available for overnight stays. It’s 16,000-18,000 yen for two people per building on weekdays. On weekends, it’s 18,000-20,000 yen. From three people, it’s 4,000 yen per person, and 3,000 yen for elementary school students and younger. By the way, it’s an overnight stay. There seem to be only two buildings. This hot spring is also open 24 hours a day. Most hot springs around here are open 24 hours a day. It’s wonderful. The water pressure has weakened. I’ll add less water. The spring quality here is a hypotonic neutral simple hot spring. It’s luxurious. Personally, I prefer Yakushiyu, which I went to earlier. But the location is definitely better here. The temperature was hot, so I thought the hot spring would be too hot, but since it’s in the mountains, the wind that comes in is really cold. So it’s really comfortable. This place is available 24 hours a day, so you might be able to experience a different atmosphere if you go in at night. It’s stopped. 15 more minutes. If the hot water stops here, you won’t be able to use the shower here, so you should be careful. I got out. It was really good. The hot spring and the location were great. 2500 yen is quite expensive around here, but this time I paid 2500 yen for a special room, but you can use the indoor bath for 1000 yen for 50 minutes. Now I’ll drain the water. There are 16 family baths. 5 indoor baths and 11 semi-open-air baths. The cheapest bath, 1000 yen for 50 minutes, is an indoor bath. 1500 to 3000 yen is a semi-open-air bath. There is no air conditioning, but there is one electric fan. There is no hair dryer here, but it seems that there is a hair dryer room at the back left of the reception desk. I’ll be out now. I’ll have a pineapple cider after the bath. This is the hair dryer room. It’s a space for one person like this. It’s delicious. It even had 10% fruit juice in it. Um… an incident occurred. My wife got her feet stuck in the mud after taking a bath and it was sparkling clean. Lol. Has that ever happened? And it’s really deep. The parking lot filled up in no time. This time we stopped at “Waita Onsen” in Kumamoto Prefecture and some great views and hot springs along the way. What did you think? Kyushu is definitely the kingdom of hot springs!!! See you in the next video! Thank you for watching until the end.

Nice view of the 2 waterfalls from 4:24 – The ground must be very hot underneath for all that steam!
Fantastic as always @watatabi.
Cantik
Love your videos of hidden Japan. Problem is I now want to go there🙂😊
Hello from New York City, I cannot tell you how much I love your videos. I wish they had a like for every time. I’ve watched them over again. You take every bit of stress that I have away.
But I wish you would be more careful of snakes and bears, and such be well !!
What a fantastic adventure!
Beautiful, right at the beginning of the video (two magical waterfalls) they have a beautiful romantic story.
The town with hot springs and vapors is enchanting.
Very nice and interesting.
Sulfur-scented perfumes and colognes do exist, but they're uncommon. Some Halloween or prank shops will also have sprays that smell like rotten eggs. If you decide to wear them, you should record how people react. 😂
Wow. That place is intense. We've got to visit Kyushu before we're too old to travel (we're both 71). You are such a pro. Have you worked in TV or cinema production? We also love your nice, soothing voice in the narration. Mechakucha yasashi.
