This time I will give a brief introduction to Meigetsuin Temple, a famous hydrangea spot in Kamakura. I recently visited during hydrangea season and it was beautiful, so I would like to briefly introduce the temple grounds as a recommended spot. This time I will not go into detail about the history or the highlights of the temple grounds, but I hope you will use it as a reference for sightseeing in Kamakura during hydrangea season. Meigetsuin Temple is a famous hydrangea spot known as the Hydrangea Temple. It is a temple where you can enjoy the spectacular sight of about 2,500 hydrangeas in bloom. The vivid blue color known as Meigetsuin Blue is beautiful. Most of the flowers are Japanese endemic hydrangeas, and the uniformity is what makes it attractive. When I took the photo with my smartphone, the saturation was light and whitish due to the settings, but the actual color is much darker and beautiful. As for the history of Meigetsuin Temple becoming a famous hydrangea spot, hydrangeas began to be planted after the war. At that time , Due to a shortage of supplies and manpower, there were not enough posts to maintain the approach to the temple, so instead, hydrangeas, which are relatively easy to maintain, were planted. After that, the beauty of hydrangeas gradually became known, and their numbers increased, leading to the temple being known as a famous hydrangea spot, and now the temple grounds are so popular that they are crowded with people. Other famous hydrangea spots in Kamakura are Hasedera Temple and Jojuin Temple, but Hasedera Temple also has 2,500 hydrangeas planted. Hasedera Temple began cultivating hydrangeas at the beginning of the Heisei era, so its history is surprisingly new, but the difference with Meigetsuin Temple is that you can see 40 different kinds of hydrangeas in various colors. Jojuin Temple is popular for the view overlooking the hydrangeas and the sea from the approach to the temple. At Hasedera Temple, you can also enjoy a view overlooking Yuigahama Beach, but this temple is more popular for its view of both hydrangeas and the sea. At Meigetsuin Temple, you can enjoy beautiful flowers throughout the year, including plum and cherry blossoms, and it is also known for its beautiful autumn leaves. It has a dry landscape garden and round windows, The Meigetsuin tower is also popular, and the “Window of Enlightenment” in the main hall is a particularly popular photo spot where you can appreciate the beauty of the four seasons in a round frame.Finally , I’ll give a brief history of Meigetsuin.Meigetsuin is a Rinzai sect temple of the Kenchoji school, and was built in the Kamakura period when the regent Hojo Tokiyori was about to become a monk.In the Muromachi period, the Uesugi clan, the Kanto Kanrei, expanded the temple, and sub-temples were built, which made it flourish, but in the Meiji period it was abandoned and only Meigetsuin, the head branch temple, remains to this day.So, I’ve only briefly introduced Meigetsuin, a famous spot for hydrangeas in Kamakura.I also introduce nearby temples in other videos, so please take a look if you’d like.Thank you for watching.
