大山崎より宝積寺、酒解神社を巡りながら天下分け目の天王山の頂上へ。Climbing to the summit of Mt. Tennozan. Kyoto, Japan
This time, I visited Mt. Tennozan in Ōyamazaki. With an elevation of 270.4 meters, it takes about an hour and a half to reach the summit. At the foot of this mountain, the historic Battle of Yamazaki between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Akechi Mitsuhide was fought. Later, during the end of the Edo period, this was also the site where 17 loyalists, including Maki Izuminokami, took their own lives after fleeing the Kinmon Incident. The first stop on this journey was Dainen-ji Temple, founded in 1555.
It houses an Important Cultural Property—the standing statue of Amida Nyorai. During the Kinmon Incident, the temple became a camp for Chōshū forces and was devastated by fire. After a short walk, I arrived at Hōshaku-ji Temple. The trailhead to climb Mt. Tennozan is located at the back of its precinct. During the Battle of Yamazaki, Hideyoshi set up his headquarters at this temple. Even today, you can see many historical artifacts related to him. Upon entering, you’ll see a three-storied pagoda, said to have been built overnight by Hideyoshi to mourn the fallen soldiers of the battle. Hōshaku-ji was originally founded in 724 by the monk Gyōki under the order of Emperor Shōmu. The temple enshrines the “Uchide” and “Kozuchi” (magical mallet and treasure) said to have been gifted by a dragon deity in a dream. There was also a “Success Stone”, where Hideyoshi is said to have sat and directed the battle. Now, the hike begins in earnest. I recently bought new trekking shoes and was fully prepared. A few minutes into the trail, I caught a glimpse of the mountain where Iwashimizu Hachimangū Shrine is located —along with a Shinkansen passing by, perfectly timed. As I neared the summit, I saw the torii gate of Sakatoke Shrine. Around this gate, you’ll find illustrated panels depicting the Battle of Yamazaki and views of the actual battlefield below. The area visible from here was the site of the historic battlefield. A little further up the path is the grave of the 17 loyalists. There are many signboards and explanations along the way, making the hike enjoyable for history enthusiasts. I’m almost at Sakatoke Shrine. While the exact founding date of the shrine is unknown, records suggest it existed as early as the Nara period. The current structure was rebuilt in the 1800s. From the shrine, it’s just a little further to the summit. I’ve reached the top. It was a fulfilling climb, rich in history and great views. Thank you for watching until the end!
