Benidorm 🇪🇸 Spain | Walking Tour 2025

Dear friends! I invite you to join me for a walk. in one of the brightest and sunniest parts of Spain. – the city of Benidorm. The city’s trademark is its two magnificent sandy beaches – Levante and Poniente both have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag seal of approval since 1987. It is from the picturesque Levante beach, where the sun is reflected in the crystal clear water where our walk begins. This amazing resort is located in the province of Alicante, within the Autonomous Community of Valencia, on the picturesque Costa Blanca. The city has a population of about 75,000. Benidorm is divided into five neighborhoods: Levante and Poniente beaches, Old Town (El Castell) as well as the neighborhoods of La Cala and El Rincón de Loix. Benidorm remained a small fishing village (~2-3 thousand inhabitants) until the 1950s Activity in the fishing industry waned between 1950 and 1952, but with the appointment of Pedro Zaragoza as mayor (1950-1967). and the adoption of the 1956 master plan, urban growth began apace. This is where high-rise hotels and residential skyscrapers began to be built, which has turned Benidorm into a unique “New York of the Mediterranean”. with the highest density of skyscrapers in Spain. In 1959, the local mayor allowed bikinis, launched a song festival, the city became a powerful magnet for mass tourism. The active tourist boom came in the 1960s and 70s Introduction of charter flights, growth in the number of hotels, infrastructure development. Modern Benidorm continues to develop as a major European resort: more than 2.8 million tourists the city welcomed in 2024, infrastructure – beaches, theme parks, skyscrapers like the Gran Hotel Bali and Intempo – 187 meters, the tallest residential building in the EU The city has been awarded the “Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism” status by the EU and continues to adapt to new challenges. And we’re heading on our way to the main attraction of Benidorm El Balcón del Mediterráneo. We will definitely stop by St. James and St. Anne’s Church Església de Sant Jaume i Santa Anna Benidorm was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age, from about 3000 B.C., represented by Iberian cultures. The Romans and the Phoenicians came here later on In the 3rd through 5th centuries B.C., the Romans established settlements, build roads, temples, forums and fortifications. A particularly important historical artifact is the castellum at Tossal de la Cala – Roman watchtower from the 1st century BC, which served as part of the defense network. After the fall of the Roman Empire. the land goes to the Arabs (Umayyad Caliphate), and there’s a small Arab village here in the ninth and thirteenth centuries. In 1245 Benidorm was conquered by Jaime I of Aragon, On May 8, 1325, Admiral Bernardo de Sarria granted him city rights (Carta Puebla). – This is considered the date of the official founding of the city. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the settlement was subjected to the raids by Berber pirates (1410 and 1448), which led to the devastation and the sale of some of the inhabitants into slavery. In 1666, thanks to the new Carta Puebla. and water canals (Sèquia Mare), the city is revitalized, agriculture and fisheries are developing, especially tuna (almadraba) fishing. Església de Sant Jaume i Santa Anna This white-washed church is in the traditional Valencian style was built in the 18th century. and is still a spiritual symbol of the city. Then we come out to the spacious and sunny Plaça del Castell. – former fortress, where you can get a great view of both beaches. This is the place to linger for a few minutes, to take a picture, to breathe in the sea air and just enjoy the moment. Admiring the breathtaking view. from the Balcony of the Mediterranean Of course you and I will go down to the balcony. for an unbeatable view of the Mediterranean. It’s not for nothing that this place beckons all tourists with its unforgettable views. The site has a pentagonal shape and is located on a high cliff, which serves as a natural divider between Levante and Poniente beaches. The water has such a vibrant and impressive color that it looks like we’re in a fairy tale Of course such beautiful views people want to capture for the future These views are traditionally favored by honeymooners A wedding in such an atmosphere is sure to be remembered for many years of happy life We continue our walk through the square. the other side opens up. picturesque view of the domes of the church, glowing blue against the bright sky. A peek inside the temple itself and enjoying the atmosphere, you and I are going for a walk. through the narrow streets of the Old Town, where every building holds a piece of history. We’ll be sure to check out Calle de los Tapas. – one of the most colorful places in the city. It’s especially nice to just walk here. looking at the many cozy stores and the many different cafes that smell like fresh paella. This is where you can get yourself gastronomic break and try some traditional Spanish appetizers. It’s a very colorful place Continuing our walk, we’ll be going out to small observation decks, tucked away in the streets, ♪ to be admired again and again ♪ the breathtaking view of the vast Mediterranean Sea. And this is where we reached to the cozy Plaza de la Señoría. – a quiet plaza overlooking the sea, where it’s nice to sit in the shade. and enjoy the tranquility. We’ll catch a little gull conflict Hope they made friends afterward 🙂 This is where we come out to Placa del Castell again. to enjoy this unforgettable atmosphere again. To walk through these historic sites and feel the breath of history. Once again, let’s enjoy these stunning views. And the serenity of the real owners of these places. Let’s walk through the streets where you can feel the spirit of this city. Here is a mix of architecture from different eras and generations Residential buildings are juxtaposed with cozy little stores. Walking down these streets it’s very interesting to look at the colorful signage There seems to be a lot of amazing services and goods to be found here. Continuing our walk we approach Parc d’Elx. At the entrance we are greeted by a stone bust of the “Lady of Elche”. This magnificent stone bust depicts a noble woman with an ornate headdress and lavish jewelry. The main “celebrity” of the park was white doves – there are many of them here. There is a fountain where you can feed them. Because of this, the park is often referred to as “pigeon square” It’s a cozy city park, is located in the center of Benidorm, along Colón Street. and directly off the beach of Poniente, next to the harbor. The park is dotted with palm trees, creating a warm Mediterranean ambiance. Comfortable benches, alleys and small playgrounds for children and sports. make it a nice place for a family vacation From Parc d’Elx, lined with green palm trees, we’re heading towards the waterfront. we’re gonna walk along it for a little bit, feeling the sea breeze and watching, as the waves gently crash against the shore. As we continue our walk we turn toward the harbor. Here we have a beautiful view of the yachts. fishing boats and pleasure boats. All around breathes unhurried, coastal life. You want to linger here, just to listen to the sound of the surf. and admire the beauty of the city. From the harbor, we walk along a beautiful, well-maintained promenade to Placa als Mariners i Almadravers de Benidorm. – a small square dedicated to sailors and fishermen, who once formed the backbone of local life. Admiring this beauty you can feel the spirit of the city, connected to the sea in more than just a touristy way, but also historically. Leaving the old streets, we’ll briefly enter the more modern part of the city, where Benidorm opens up from a different perspective. – energetic, lively, with stores, squares and street life. After a walk around the waterfront and the city you and I will head to one of the most scenic and significant sites in Benidorm —
the Tossal de la Cala observation deck. This is an elevated area, between the beaches of Poniente and La Cala, rises about 100 meters above sea level. and offers its guests stunning panoramic views, where the sea meets the horizon, and the city is bathed in sunlight. The natural beauty here is amazingly intertwined, tranquility and living history. There are ruins preserved at the top of the hill. of an ancient Iberian and Roman settlement, whose history dates back to the 1st and 2nd centuries BC. In Roman times, a castellum stood here. – a fortified military post that was part of a defense network, that protected the coast from attack during the Sertorian Wars (circa 77 B.C.). Every stone on this hill holds imprints of the past, and the views seem to transport you to another time. – where the wind knew the names of the legionnaires, and the sea was the border of the empire. As long as you enjoy the view, you’ll be accompanied by the cry of the seagulls that have become the real mistresses of this place. They’re especially numerous here — they hover over the cliffs, and sit on the railing and watch the visitors with interest. The seagulls seem to be woven into the local landscape and add a special, vibrant sound to this silence in the heights. Their wings against the blue sky, the sound of the surf below and the light sea breeze create an unforgettable atmosphere. – as if time slows down and you just live, here and now, at one with nature and history.
