多摩川の流れに沿って歩いていると、不意に時代がねじれたような感覚に襲われた。東京都狛江市。兜塚古墳は西暦500年頃のものだという。中には入れないが、古代の人々が川辺に眠りを選んだ痕跡が、静かに地面の下に息づいている。さらに歩けば、江戸時代の面影を残す古民家園が現れた。見たことがあるような、知らないような。屋形船、水田、木造の柱――農耕の記憶が風の中に漂う。工場群の狭間に浮かぶように祀られた穴守稲荷分社は、まるで時代に持ち上げられた祈りの断片。終点は泉龍寺。7体の地蔵、濁った池、木漏れ日の奥に佇む弁天像。そして駅のすぐ横に竹林が風に揺れていた。古代と江戸と現代が折り重なったこの場所には、時の境界が溶けかけていた。ただ静かに、それでも確かに、町の記憶が歩く者を包んでいた。
