such as the mysterious Shishido Cave where Minamoto no Yoritomo hid, and the scenic Mitsuishi rocks at Manazuru Cape, making it a great tourist destination to enjoy along with a drive. This time, we stayed in a suite at Kaiseki Ryokan Ashikari, which is one of the most recommended hotels in Yugawara Onsen, so we will introduce the spectacular view from the open-air bath in the guest room and the luxurious kaiseki cuisine that will satisfy your soul. Just before Oku-Yugawara, go along the Tsubaki Line mountain pass that leads to Hakone, and after about 15 minutes, you will come to a parking space called Tsubakidai. Up ahead is Shishidono Cave, a place associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo. Tunnel? After passing through the tunnel, we came to a place where many stone monuments were erected. And it seems there is the shishidono cave up ahead, but there is no one there except for us, so I’m scared that I might time travel. My wife doesn’t care about that and just keeps going. It seems that we have to go down a slope lined
with stone lanterns and Jizo statues for about 400 meters. The trip there is fine, but the trip back is going to be extremely tough. Shishidono Cave is said to be the cave where Minamoto no Yoritomo hid after losing the Battle of Ishibashiyama. In the historical drama “The 13 Lords of the Kamakura” this is depicted as the place where Kajiwara Kagetoki, played by Nakamura Shido, deliberately let Minamoto no Yoritomo, played by Oizumi Yo, escape. Yes, and finally we arrived at the Shishidono Cave. This place, tucked away in the steep mountains, Even today, traces of those times remain quietly. In addition to here in Yugawara, there is also another Shishidono Cave in Manazuru, and it is not certain where Yoritomo hid himself. The inn we stayed at this time is located on a hill in Yugawara Town, so we were able to enjoy not only the hot springs but also the magnificent scenery. The landlady and many other staff members welcomed us,
and it was clear that this was a prestigious inn. Outside the shiny windows you can see a colorful garden with fresh greenery, and when you check in you feel as if you are in a forest. Kaiseki Ryokan Ashikari is a long-established inn that was founded over 80 years ago. The building, based on the Sukiya-style architecture, is cleverly placed on a hilly area of approximately 9,000m2, and all 17 guest rooms have different gardens and beautiful views of Yugawara. The interior of the building was renovated from 2020 to 2023. In order to create a sense of unity with nature, the openings were made as large as possible, and the design has a Japanese feel. Now let’s head to the room. The room we will be staying in this time is a top-class room with a spectacular open-air bath, located at the end of the charming building. A spacious space with as few walls as possible The floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows offer a view of vibrant greenery, creating a beauty that is as if it had been cut out of a painting.
It feels as if all five senses are enveloped in fresh greenery. In addition, the exposed beams on the ceiling create an open and tasteful space. A luxurious time, as if you had this magnificent view all to yourself. Your mind and body will slowly relax. A wonderful hot spring that combines nature, history, and healing. After enjoying a drink and a bite of ice cream, it’s time for dinner. Dinner will be served in a stylish restaurant with a wine cellar. We were given a lovely seat with a view of the garden through a large window. I would like to toast with Dom Perignon, but I have already received a complimentary drink from Ikkyu-san, so I will refrain from doing so. First, the appetizer. An elaborate dish of chicken breast, squid and red sorrel on top of Yoro shinjo. It’s lively. Next up is a dish using seasonal ingredients. Sorry, I forgot to ask what kind of fish it was. There was food hidden under the sushi. Next is the soup. And bite-sized rice. A luxurious dish that combines rockfish and sea urchin. And then the sashimi arrived Fresh sashimi goes well with fresh wasabi. Next is the hotpot. The ingredients in this luxurious hotpot are abalone and scallops. The ultimate luxury. The timing of the food being served is perfect. This is an egg that has been rubbed with burdock root and wrapped around a sea bass. It’s a lot of work. This thick piece of duck meat is juicy and chewy. And the main dish is Kagoshima beef fillet steak. As expected of a first-class inn, it did not disappoint my expectations. The day we stayed there, the Firefly Festival was being held, and they offered to take us to the festival site. We came there for a walk after dinner. It’s a really nice park. The lights are gradually going out and it looks like we can see fireflies up ahead. The sight of the gentle dancing lights made me feel nostalgic, like I was a child again. It’s beautiful weather. That’s right, let’s go to Manyo Park! There’s a tunnel. Literary Path. Let’s go in for a bit. How wonderful! A dynamic river and a spectacular waterfall. This is definitely literary. Manyo Park was opened after the Russo-Japanese War as a sanatorium for war-wounded soldiers, utilizing its hot springs. It is said that Heihachiro Togo, hero of the Battle of Tsushima, also recuperated here. The approximately 20,000m2 park includes a shrine, hot spring facilities, a cafe, and more, making it a place of relaxation where you can fully enjoy nature on the small hill with a clear stream running through it. It is also a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves, and is lit up during the Momiji Festival. This is where I saw the fireflies yesterday. It’s a nice atmosphere. I don’t have much time to show you everything, but there is also a foot bath area and a cafe with an authentic teahouse, making the whole park a huge theme park related to hot springs and literature.
Well, even so, there were hardly any people there in the early morning, so I was able to enjoy a pleasant walk in the park that was all to myself. Now let’s take a morning bath and go to breakfast.
