【島根/松江】水と歴史が息づく町で過ごす1日旅

Hello, this is Yuni. I am in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. Today I will visit Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, known as the Water City. I see off the express train Yakumo, which departs earlier, and then I depart. It takes about 40 minutes by train from Izumo Station to Matsue Station. Let’s start a peaceful day trip from Izumo. Gradually, beautiful scenery of Lake Shinji came into view from the train window . Lake Shinji is one of the most scenic spots in Shimane Prefecture. The beautiful evening scenery has been selected as one of the “100 Best Sunsets,” but the calm lake surface in the morning calms the mind. From here, I head to our first destination by bus. I couldn’t find the bus stop near the station, so I walked a little. After about 20 minutes of swaying on the bus, I arrived. Yaegaki Shrine is a shrine that is loved as the god of matchmaking. This is a special place for people who wish for love to be fulfilled. It is a calming shrine surrounded by tranquility and a gentle atmosphere. Since this shrine is related to Izumo Taisha, it has a similar shimenawa, though it is a little smaller. This shrine is particularly famous for its fortune-telling at Kagami-no-ike Pond. Many worshippers come here to pray for success in love. Let’s go to Kagami-no-ike Pond. Kagami-no-ike Pond is located at the back. As you walk along the approach surrounded by trees, your mind naturally calms down. Kagami-no-ike Pond is clear and blue. Now, let’s try water fortune-telling at Kagami-no-ike Pond. First, quietly float the fortune-telling paper in the pond, then quietly place a 100 yen or 10 yen coin on the red seal and pray in your heart. It is said that if the fortune-telling paper sinks quickly (within 15 minutes), you will find a good match soon, and if it sinks slowly (more than 30 minutes), you will find a slow match. It is also said that if it sinks close to you , you will be connected to someone close to you, and if it sinks far away, you will be connected to someone far away. This is a mysterious fortune-telling method that has been handed down since ancient times. Quietly watch the paper slowly sink into the water. It is a special moment where time flows slowly. My fortune-telling paper sank in about 6 minutes. After praying, let’s have Matsue’s specialty, Izumo soba. Here you can enjoy authentic 100% buckwheat soba. I visited the restaurant a little before opening, but there was a long line at the time of opening. The restaurant quickly filled up. I poured the soup with dashi stock to my liking and took a bite first. It was my first time eating 100% buckwheat soba, but I was able to fully taste the original aroma and sweetness of the soba, and it had a chewy texture and was very delicious ✨ It goes great with grated yam! It was a memorable bowl that was no wonder there was a line. Thank you for the meal. I can see my next destination. It’s said that there are engraved stones and heart-shaped stones in the stone walls of Matsue Castle, the founder of Matsue , and I have not been able to find them yet, but it is fun to walk while looking for them 😊 Matsue Castle is one of the twelve remaining castle towers. It is a famous castle with a long history built in 1611. It is also known as “Plover Castle”, and its beautiful appearance has fascinated many people. It was designated a national treasure in 2015. Matsue Castle is characterized by the Shachihoko, the largest of the twelve remaining castle towers. Demon-faced onigawara tiles on the corners of the roof. Temple-style windows called “kagashira windows”. The top floor, the fifth floor, is a watchtower with a 360-degree view without walls. Let’s go and see inside the castle tower. Here are some photos. The castle was dismantled and repaired over a period of five years from 1950, and the old materials that were not reused and are of high value are preserved in the basement where I am now. The staircases to the first and fourth floors have sliding doors that can be closed. These are thought to have been used to lock the doors or for sieges. Onigawara tiles on the roof. I have reached the top floor. The view from the top floor is exceptional, with a panoramic view of Lake Shinji and the streets of Matsue. The building was completed in 1903 and was originally built to be used as a temporary residence for Emperor Meiji. It has a gorgeous finish with many decorations and sculptures, but what is interesting is that it is a “pseudo-Western building,” that is, it is not Western-style. The exterior is Western-style, but the roof is Japanese-style with tiles, and the interior is also an exquisite fusion of Japanese and Western styles. In 1907, when Crown Prince Yoshihito (later Emperor Taisho) visited San’in Road, it became an inn and served as a guest house. It is a valuable building where you can feel the breath of the Meiji era. On the way back, take a different route. If you are tired from walking, take a short break at the cafe. This is not only a cafe, but also roasts coffee beans, so the aroma of coffee is fragrant inside the store. The second floor is a cafe space where we can enjoy coffee while looking outside. The aroma of coffee will soothe your heart. Sit by the window on the second floor and slowly look at the river. You can also see tourist boats slowly moving down the river. It is a typical Matsue, water city unique scenery. Thank you for the meal. This is a craft and souvenir shop that was renovated from a bank built in the early Showa period. Inside the retro building, traditional crafts and local specialties from Shimane Prefecture are lined up. We can feel the passion of the maker in each product. I slowly walk around the store and choose a souvenir to commemorate my trip. I head to the last shop on this trip. It is a butcher shop that is well-known locally. Here I can find the croquettes I am looking for. These croquettes are by a butcher shop that specializes in Shimane Wagyu beef, and since they contain more than 70% meat, they are very juicy and have the flavor of Wagyu beef. There are many other attractive products, but this time I will have the beef croquettes. It is getting close to time, so I head to the station. This bus, “Gurutto Matsue Lake Line,” costs 210 yen per ride and seems to take we around Matsue’s sights and tourist facilities from Matsue Station. I found out about the sightseeing bus after getting on this bus. What’s more, there is an explanation of the tourist attractions on the bus. If you are going to do a full day of sightseeing, it is a good idea to purchase a one-day pass. I arrived at Matsue Station. I ate the beef croquette we had bought earlier. The delicious taste of the meat spread throughout our mouths. It was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. After one bite, I was hooked ☺️ How was my trip to Matsue this time? I was able to fully experience the charms of Matsue. Well, see you in the next travel video.
