塩狩峠一目千本桜 Shiokari Pass Hitome Senbonzakura

塩狩峠は北の宗谷岬から南の襟裳岬まで北海道を東西に二分した線上の真ん中より少し北側にある。「塩狩峠」の名称の由来は1869年に蝦夷地を北海道と改めた際に設置された11の区分の中の東側「天塩国(てしおのくに)現上川郡和寒町」と西側の「石狩国(いしかりのくに)現上川郡比布町」の一字ずつをとって名付けられた。「塩狩峠一目千本桜」は現在の和寒町側にあり、東西約300ｍ、南北200ｍ一帯に約1,600本のエゾヤマザクラを観ることができる。すぐそばには宗谷本線の「塩狩駅」があり列車で訪れて花見を楽しむこともできる。
Sargent’s cherry, North Japanese hill cherry, is a typical cherry tree that blooms in cold regions and grows mainly in mountainous areas. The tree grows to a height of 10 to 20 meters, with single blossoms that are 3 to 4.5 cm in diameter and five petals that are darker red in color than other types of cherry trees. In Japan, it is called “Oyama-zakura,” and in the Hokkaido region of Japan, it is also called “Ezo-yama-zakura. (“Ezo” was the name of Hokkaido before its settlement). Shiokari-toge Sightseeing Cherry Blossoms is a grove of 1,600 Ezo Yamazakura trees located in Shiokari-toge, Wassamu-cho, Hokkaido.
