Hello everyone, I’m Okada from Vacation, an architect. This time I’d like to present a new project to you . I’m currently in a house in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. Up until now, I’ve visited hotels and villas, but this time I’d like to focus on the homes of architects. I believe that “rich living creates great design,” and from that perspective, I would like to approach the “personality of the home” of architects and deepen the connection between life and architecture. So let’s take a look inside . Hello, welcome. Please come in. I’m Kanehara Daisuke. I run an architectural design office called “minato architects” based in Fukuroi, Shizuoka Prefecture. Today I’m going to introduce my own home, “Nishigasakicho House.” This house is designed to incorporate the generosity of the surrounding environment and to be able to adapt to changes as the family grows. The exterior is made of distinctive galvalume corrugated sheets, but what did you pay attention to in the design? I like galvalume as a material, but there are small, medium, and large waves, and I thought that medium wave was the best in terms of volume, so I chose medium wave.The combination of the gray color of this galvalume and the color of the wood at the entrance is beautiful.It has the image of two volumes, and this is the entrance, but the entrance volume is inserted from the side, so the material is changed there.It has a design that protrudes 910mm on the other side as a bath.The proportions of this front are also cute, aren’t they? The upper window is the room where I work now, and I wanted to bring in as much light as possible on the north side, so I installed the window at the top.This is the north side you can see now.I see.The design of this intercom and post is also unique and cute.I see.This is a 60mm square aluminum, and the nameplate is inserted on top of it at the same corner, so it’s designed like this.It’s not attached to the wall, but is independent.Now , please take a look inside. 壁掛けまで、壁掛け壁掛け壁掛け壁掛け壁掛け壁 English : This is the entrance. As you enter there is a window directly ahead so you can see the garden. It is a private garden, not visible from the road, and was designed so that it can be used as a play area for children. Light comes in and it is bright, which is nice. Just inside the entrance there is a 3-tatami storage unit where you can store camping equipment, children’s strollers, bicycles and other things you don’t want to show . The entire door is a mirror, which is precisely because it is the entrance. Yes, rather than just putting a full-length mirror there, I wanted it to be a mirror, so I made the fixture a mirror, which both eliminated the cramped feeling of the entrance and added an element of mirroring. What is the finish on this earthen floor area? The earthen floor area is washed mortar. The outside is washed concrete, and we had the outside of the entrance finished and the inside washed mortar was made to match . This is the entrance hall. The lighting is kind of cute, isn’t it? I wanted to hang pictures and such, and the angle of this lighting can be adjusted so that no matter what I hang there it will illuminate the area . Now, So this is the living room, so I’ll show you around. This is the living room. Wow, it’s a very bright and open space. The window above is the same as the one in my work room that I saw from outside earlier. So this is also symmetrical, or rather, designed to be a pair. The land on the south side is vacant, but the view wasn’t that good that I would have to open the window, so I still wanted to bring in the light, so I raised the window on the south side, built a wall underneath it, and hung various plants and children’s calligraphy on it . I see. So, I thought this was also a very symmetrical design, but there are windows of the same shape and size on both the left and right sides. Did you take that into consideration? I see . You were conscious of this and installed the same size sashes on the east and west sides so that the west wind would come in, and when you open both windows, the wind comes through and it feels really nice. The ceiling height is about 5m at the top, and 5m at the top. It’s pretty high. Yes, the open-ceiling space really feels nice. How big is it? The kitchen is 26 tatami mats in size. What kind of lighting is used on the ceiling? The lighting is from Endo Lighting, and it is a line of four lights that are connected together to make it look like one line . It is hung from above to create a line of lighting. Can you turn it on for a moment? It’s very beautiful. It’s really frameless, so only the light source is visible . The kitchen is also very spacious. How big is it? It’s 360cm wide and 85cm deep. It’s very deep, isn’t it ? Yes. The reason for the depth is that I wanted to create storage on the living room side, for example, for children’s diapers, and so on. Oh, I see, I see. There is a lot of storage space on both this side and the living room lining side. I was able to make a little more depth here, so it feels like the depth is changing depending on the location of the documents. It’s nice. The design of the handle is also unique and nice. I thought that I might walk close to it, so I thought that a handle that sticks out too much might get caught. The ceiling in the kitchen here is lowered, right? Yes, it’s the same as the entrance hall, and it’s 2200mm high, so it’s come all the way up. The contrast between the ceiling height of the living room and the kitchen space is very effective, making the living room feel more open. It’s designed to make you feel spacious and comfortable when you enter, and when you cook, you can cook comfortably in a human-scale space. That’s nice. What does the back of this kitchen look like? The back is hidden as storage, and the refrigerator is in there. It’s a really large storage space . With the doors, it’s a very simple, minimalist design, which gives it a lived-in feel, and I like it in its own way. When guests come over, you can just close everything and hide everything, and it’s usually left open. It’s not usually closed, but you can hide it a little when guests come over, which is nice. Is this kitchen made as a single unit, including the sink? Yes. I drew up the design and had a furniture store make it for me. The countertop and sink are designed as one. It’s really beautiful. It has a vibration finish, so even small scratches are not noticeable. It’s one piece, so there’s no gap maintenance or dirt, and it’s easy to maintain. What brand is this gas stove? The gas stove is a Noritz three-burner type and the range hood is Ariafina. It’s a simple design, isn’t it? It’s nice. The dishwasher uses BOSH . Really. There’s a dishwasher in here too. The storage on this side has a cute handle. You put your hand in to open it, and inside there are two levels. It ‘s a simple yet very functional kitchen. They’ve made it as much as possible. It ‘s really wonderful. The unique plan of the house is that right next to the entrance hall is the private room area, and the plan is such that the private rooms are connected to the entrance hall. The left side is all storage. This is all storage on the left side. I’m currently storing my children’s things there . It’s nice. It feels like you can store miscellaneous things there. Yes. Also, with curtains, you can open them all up. It’s very easy to use. It’s true that with doors, the opening can get in the way of traffic, so the space itself gives a soft impression, which is nice. Also, the switch is installed inside this storage, but since it’s a curtain, you can just put your hand in. I see. You can access the switch without having to open the door. I see. It’s an interesting and unexpected convenience, isn’t it? I haven’t used it yet, but it doesn’t have any particular purpose right now, but this is a place where the usage will change in the future as the children grow up. For now, this storage space can be used across the hallway from this room, so this private room and storage space will be one set. It’s on the hallway side so it can be used as a separate storage space. This is the bedroom. This room is currently 8 tatami mats, and there is no partition in the middle. When you open the curtains, the hallway and the room are connected as one, and the design makes the space feel larger. It can also be partitioned in the middle later. It is also intended to be used as a study room or a sleeping room for children. What kind of lighting are you using? It’s a mirror-finished product from Tokyo Metal Industry . If you use a design that has a lamp attached to the wall. The lamp itself is sold, so it’s attached to the socket. Since it’s mirror-finished, the light source doesn’t get into your eyes, so it’s less likely to be dazzling even in the bedroom. So instead, there is no lighting on the ceiling, only from the wall. I’ve been wondering about this staircase for a while now, does that mean that the upper part is a loft with an open ceiling? How high is the ceiling? The height is under 140cm because of the loft regulations. How do you use it now? My children are still small, so they go up there with me and play. It’s kind of like a play area for children, or a secret base. The back part separated by glass is also connected to the next room. You can see the room inside the big window that you saw outside from the loft . From here, the height of the window and the height of the loft floor are the same, so it feels like it goes straight through to the back. I wanted to deliver the light that I took in to the loft, and I also wanted the light to reach the hall, so I used glass. I painted the ceiling with a glossy paint so that as much light as possible can get in. This finish is the floor and wall. What finish is used for this loft space? The finish is made of a material called lauan plywood. It does reflect a bit of light and makes it shiny. It seems that it captures more light and diffuses it . That’s the image. There are a lot of small details. The walls are oil-painted and not shiny, but the floor and ceiling have a bit of a shine. Can I go next? To the room in the back that we saw from above. Excuse me. This is the room where I’m working now. The upper part is the glass part that we saw from the loft earlier. The design is like a pair of glass on the left and right. It’s open. Since the window is on the top, it feels a bit closed in, but it’s a place where you can concentrate quite well. It’s true that this is the north side, so rather than direct sunlight, it feels like soft light is coming in steadily . It’s nice. You can also display various works. Is the back here a storage space? This is the storage in this room. Basically, everything is divided by this curtain. What is the reason for this curtain? There were a lot of things like the switch reaching the door, but I think it will have a softer impression than the built-in fixtures, so I wanted to create a home atmosphere, so I designed it with Fabricscape, an office that designs curtains in Osaka. So, this curtain itself is original, or rather, the fabric itself was selected together. They selected and proposed the fabric, and they did everything from sewing it to sewing it. So, this stitch at the foot of the curtain is about 10 cm long with normal curtains. It’s very light and beautiful. I thought the color was white, but it seems to have a little bit of beige in it. In fact, the colors are all different on each side, and are the colors different on each side? Yes. All four colors. Really. If you look closely, the back is a little green , the middle is pink, and the right is a beige color. Really. I didn’t notice. The lace on this side is also pinkish. The side facing this room is made of lace, isn’t it? I see. There are two layers of lace, and they’re painted, so you can’t see inside as easily as with one layer. It’s true that the hardness of the space, and the curtains that neutralize it have a softness that’s good, I’m interested in this doorknob. The doorknob is a wooden doorknob, is it original? No, it’s not original, but the architect Fujita runs a fittings brand called “KOTO”, and it’s one of their products. It matches the lauan plywood fittings, isn’t it? I’ve always wanted to use it, and finally I can. You can feel the architect’s attention to detail in this kind of deal, don’t you? I thought that a lever handle wouldn’t match the atmosphere, but it does suddenly become metallic, so this is the bath and the washroom. It’s right in front of you as you enter the entrance. There is a unit bath in the back. It’s a normal Toto unit bath, and the washing area is a little larger, 1.25 tsubo. It’s also nice that there are two sinks, as it’s designed to be used in a lifestyle where you can soak your laundry in one and use the other. The shelf in between was custom made and is cleverly designed to be combined with a ready-made sink.The R here is the same R.The combination of white and wood is cute and nice.Is it okay to use water on this? Yes.It’s been painted with urethane to prevent water from seeping in.The bathroom is bright and has some greenery in it which makes it feel nice.I see.There’s a light window so sunlight comes in and the plants grow well.Now let’s move on to the interview.Please tell us what prompted you to build this house and why you chose this piece of land.It started when my child was born and I knew I wanted my own home after all. I talked with my wife, designed and built it. As for the land, this is already my wife’s hometown, and the land itself was owned by her relatives, and we got it cheaply. Was it surrounded by a certain field, or was that a reason that encouraged us? Yes, the field that remains on the east side of here was the remaining land of the person who owned the land, and my wife’s father was growing vegetables there, right ? Even before we built our house. So, there was a field next door that we could use to grow vegetables later, and the vegetables we’re growing now can be kept 100% fresh, so we decided to build it here. Have you done any farming yet? I haven’t done any farming yet. Farming is good, it’s fun. I don’t have a favorite place, but when I was making the house, I wanted to make it as flat as possible by figuring out how often you use the rooms, or how few places you can go to, so I designed it in a rather unique way , so I don’t think there is one place that stands out the most. I like the living room because that’s where I spend the most time, but I also want to be able to go to the individual rooms as much as possible, and I want the whole house to be something that we can use properly on a daily basis , so I designed it with that in mind.Are there any favorite times, not just places? For example, the light that comes in at dusk is really beautiful, and I think the look of the house changes in many ways between summer and winter, including the way the light from the sky comes in. What do you think about that? If you go there in the morning, looking up from the hallway that was on the left just after entering the entrance , you can see two panes of glass on the other side of the loft and you can look up and see the neighboring house, and the morning sun is shining on the house to the north, so it’s a view that I always see, or rather, a place that I feel when I wake up in the morning . So it’s a view that’s quite memorable. This is also a room that is basically always sunny, so in winter the sun is low in the sky and the sun shines in up to the kitchen floor , but in summer we try to block it out , but the sunlight shining in like this gives you a sense of the seasons. With so much light coming in, you can really feel the change of seasons and the passage of time, which is something you notice as you live there. Have your lifestyle changed since you started living here, in a house that you designed ? Of course there will be changes depending on your family composition and the growth of your children, but have there been any changes that are unique to this house, that are unique to an architect’s own home? Not just for yourself, but also including your family. After we built our house and there’s a field next to it, the soil is now very close, so we became more interested in plants, and that’s why they’ve been gradually increasing. We’ve really come to understand the benefits of having greenery indoors, and it really does create an atmosphere where the outside scenery and the inside are connected. We plant plants in the garden and water them ourselves, so we’re really feeling the seasons more, and we’re kind of naturally learning what kinds of vegetables are available depending on the season. It feels like our lifestyle has changed while having our feet on the ground and feeling nature. That ‘s great. One last thing I wanted to ask is, I heard that you’re opening up this living space, which you’re photographing now, as a gallery in collaboration with artists, but what was your motivation for starting this? Was that something you had in mind when you designed it from the beginning? Can you tell us more about that? When you first designed the house , you weren’t thinking at all about opening up the living room and having artists exhibit their works, but after living here for a year, the time came for me to become independent, and so I thought that I’d like more people to see my house, We’re not just opening up the house to a place where we have a desire, but we ‘re also having other people use it as an exhibition, so it’s meaningful to open it up more, and it creates an opportunity. Normally, when you say an open house, it ends once when it’s first completed, but we’re calling it an open house , and we’re going to increase the volume and keep collaborating with artists to build up the open house . I see, it’s interesting. We’ve done it twice so far, and we’re planning to do it four times this year , two in the spring and two in the fall, and we’re planning to have different people each time . It’s a complete gallery , right? However, since we live there , we try to open it only for three or four days, like weekends and one or two days on weekdays , so that it doesn’t cause any problems. However , since we live at home during the opening , it feels strange like we’re living in a gallery. It’s interesting for both sides. Visitors can experience living in a gallery, living in art, and by placing paintings or art pieces in a real living space, they will feel closer to them and be able to imagine what it will look like when they take them home. It’s an interesting initiative where you can really feel the mutual benefits. As you saw earlier, this event was born out of my hobby of collecting art, so the atmosphere of a painting you see at home is different from that of a painting you see in a gallery, so I wanted to provide a place where people could see the artworks at home, feel empathy with them, and make new discoveries , and that’s how we started.
