【夏の北海道】絶景オロロンラインで癒される涼しいドライブ旅🌻|ひまわり畑|頭大仏|稚内Vlog
This time, it’s summer in Hokkaido! We’re driving along the Ororon Line all the way up to Wakkanai—the northernmost point of Japan! This place with tons of Moai statues is actually… …a cemetery! I’ve been here a few times, but it feels like there are more statues every time… And there’s still more! There are some other cool spots nearby too— See that little dome sticking out from the lavender hill? That’s the top of a Buddha statue. It’s called the “Atama Daibutsu” (Head Buddha), and it looks super cool! It’s peak lavender season (July) right now—perfect timing! Even the water basin has summer flowers— And they’re all real! You can see the Head Buddha over there. Is this path for gods…? Visitors go around via the water path. This building is a cafe and gift shop. Through the tunnel, the statue comes into view. Its head pokes out from the ground—hence the name Head Buddha. In winter, snow piles up on its head and shoulders. There’s a path all the way around, so you can view it from every angle. The dome where the head pops out is a lavender field. Just the head peeking out! Such a surreal sight. Best time to see lavender is late July. Next up—off to see the sunflower fields in Hokuryu Town. It’s about a 2-hour drive. There are 2 million sunflowers across 23 hectares! 🌻 They hold a sunflower festival from July to August. Unfortunately… they hadn’t bloomed at all. I came a bit too early… I really wanted to see them, so I came back two weeks later in early August, and… They were in full bloom! With blue skies, it would’ve been even more stunning. Endless fields of sunflowers—it was breathtaking! This area has sunflowers from all over the world too. Apparently, they were grown by local junior high students. So many types I’ve never seen before—really interesting. This black sunflower from China is called “Claret.” We’re driving the Ororon Line—400 km of coastal road from Otaru to Wakkanai. Heading north with the sea beside us, all the way to the tip of Hokkaido. Stopped for lunch at a spot known for its seafood bowls. They’ve got seafood bowls, ramen, and more. I got the mini seafood bowl and mini ramen set. But… they’re not really that mini!? Only 1,300 yen for the set! This crazy one is today’s tuna bowl. That’s way too much! This is what you get when you don’t order the mini? About half of it’s medium fatty tuna!? All that for just 2,600 yen! It was amazing—but way too much food. Back on the road! Starting to see more wind turbines. Coming up is what I think of as the Ororon Line mascot. It’s a giant monument of a murre bird! It makes a sound like “ororon,” which is where the name comes from. That bird is the origin of the Ororon Line name. Just two more hours until we reach Wakkanai. The road just keeps going straight. Checked into the “Sahfeer Hotel Wakkanai.” Late July and the high is just 24°C—paradise. Spacious room, looks like I can really relax. Right near the hotel… is a must-visit spot in windy Wakkanai: the “Breakwater Dome.” You can climb up the stairs to the top. I stared out at the sea, braving the strong wind. There’s a walkway too. It’s 14 meters tall, 427 meters long, with 70 columns. It really feels like a Greek temple. Just before sunset, I decided to head to Cape Sōya, the northernmost point in Japan. Followed the coastline all the way to the tip. Made it to Cape Sōya! This is the northernmost point of Japan! Next to the monument, there’s a staircase down to the sea. Is that a murre? Taking the scenic “White Road” back. Spotted a herd of wild deer 👀 And now cows! Can you spot the deer herd? They’re walking in a line! Apparently bears show up here too… Better be careful now that it’s getting dark. Finally arrived at the White Road. It stretches about 3 km. During the day, the blue sky, green fields, and white road make it a photogenic spot. The white color actually comes from crushed scallop shells—local to Wakkanai. It got dark on me… Saw so many animals—it was kind of amazing. Just when I was starting to feel relieved back in town… Two huge deer right in front of a pachinko parlor! Was the grass there that tasty or something? Feels like it’s too early… Went for a Japanese-Western buffet breakfast. A deer wandered into the hotel’s garden. Wakkanai is seriously something else. After that, it disappeared toward the sea. Looks like the weather might take a turn today. So I decided to check out a different cape from Cape Sōya. This one’s called Cape Noshappu. This is what the tip of Hokkaido looks like. Looks like the striped lighthouse marks the end. There’s even an aquarium right at the tip! I’ll check that out later too. Of course, the ocean is right in front of me. Cold, windy, not very blue—kind of a moody sea. Apparently, you can take a boat to other islands from Wakkanai. “Noshappu” comes from Ainu and means “a cape that juts out like a chin” or “where the waves splash.” As always, just going with the flow, so I decided to check out Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium. Admission is 500 yen for both the aquarium and science museum. Aren’t there… a lot of seals? I even caught a baby seal feeding! So this is how they learn tricks! You can feed the adult seals too. The food looks like this— They bark and splash to get your attention, like, “Throw it over here!” They were really intense… There was also a seal show! The trainer kept saying “heave-ho!”—so cute! She’s so good at throwing! Such a wholesome place—it really warmed my heart. Oh yeah—I haven’t even gone inside the building yet. Inside, the exhibits have a charming, handmade feel. There’s a touch pool where you can feel starfish and sea cucumbers. And a tank with doctor fish— They nibble on your dead skin! It tickles… Japan’s biggest freshwater fish—the “Ito.” Now, they only live in Hokkaido. Apparently, they went extinct in Iwate and Aomori. And lastly—crab fishing! The rods have dried squid as bait. Tiny little crab! Then we headed next door to the science museum. They had real Antarctic vehicles used in the movie “Antarctica.” There’s a replica of an Antarctic base room too. And a model of an icebreaker ship! Icebreakers are ships that crack through sea ice as they move. Used by the Japanese Antarctic research team. This one’s called “Shirase.” It showed up in the anime *A Place Further than the Universe*—about high school girls going to Antarctica! If you haven’t seen it, check it out! After seals… next up: reindeer! That building on the left is for sheltering during blizzards, apparently. We’ve arrived at the Reindeer Tourist Ranch! There are currently 40 reindeer here. Reindeer antlers fall off and regrow every year. They shed around November. Time for our second feeding session of the day! Maybe this is where they sleep? Next, we’re heading from the west to east side of Northern Hokkaido— To go gold panning! Because it’s in the mountains, the season is limited from June to September. Apparently, the place to go is called “Gold House.” Gold panning costs ¥500 in the river, or ¥1000 in the tank. Looks like the tank version is more popular. But for river panning, you head to the Usotan-nai River over there. Of course I’m going for the river one! Our sensei gave us a quick lesson—and then we were off, digging like crazy. In search of that golden dream… Apparently, the gold settles at the bottom. Since gold is heavier than sand, you shake and wash it to find pieces. …But I had no idea what I was doing. Meanwhile, the master just found some immediately. He felt bad for us going home empty-handed, so he gave us his gold! This turned into something totally different from a trendy vlog, But I made it all the way to the northernmost point of Japan, Saw tons of animals, And even got to try gold panning… so I’d say it was pretty great!
